IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-IRON HEATERS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. I 78,412, dated June 6, 1876; application filed February 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CHRISTIAN, of Hamburg, in the county of Fremont, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron Heaters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the lids or covers of a sad-iron heater to open and close over the iron byits movement, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective, and Fig. 2 a plan, view of my invention.
In the figures, A represents the body of a sad-iron heater, and B the top. The top B is of course provided with an opening, through which the iron is inserted into the heater. In order to retain the heat within this heater, the opening through which the iron is inserted is closed, after the iron has been placed in, by means of two covers or lids, O 0. These lids are simply pieces of sheet metal, pivoted at a a to the cover or top B, and are provided with eccentric wings or arms 0 e, which are formed by cutting slots in the lids. These slots and wings cross each other when the lids are closed over the iron, and the forward portion of the handle rests between them. When the iron is drawn backward, the handle, acting against the wings, causes them to force open the two lids, and thus free the iron. When the iron is placed back again in the heater, and moved forward, the handle, acting against the wings, causes the lids to close, and thus cover the iron in the heater.
A suitable opening may be made in the lids January, 1876.
