No.17'8',246. Patented June 61,1876.

. UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
'Pen-holders, or other articles,
EMIL LILIENTHAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ORESTES CLEVE- LAND, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEvIcEs FoR DIPPINe PENcILs AND PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters .To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, EMILLLLIENTHAL, of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Devices for Holding Pencils,
dipped and dried; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing', forming a part of this specication. Y
The object of my invention is to produce a device by means of which a number of pencils, pen-holders, or other articles can be simultaneously clamped and held by their ends while being dipped in anyv material with which it is desired to coat them, and dried; and it consists in the devices he einafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan View of one side. Fig. 2 is a transverse section and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the other side of one form of a device which embodies my invention.
-ln this a frame, A, is provided with two or more transverse slots, B, and one or more ribs or projections, C, forming a part of or secured thereto. I A
A second frame, E, is provided with one or more longitudinal `ribs or projections, D, secured thereto by lugs or other fastening devices passing through the slots B, the ribs D being on the same plane and parallel with the ribs O. This frame is capable of moving over the frame A in `guides formed on` the latter.
A smooth base, upon which the ribs C are secured, or form a part of the same, serves as a guide to determine the depth to which the ends of the pencils, pen-holders,&c., are to be inserted, thus insuring a uniform depthof i insertion tof all of them.
The ribs O and D may be beveled, as shownr in Fig. 2,to form sharp clampingedges,or
. they may be made `with ,their clamping-faces at right angles to their upper surfaces, if desired, although I prefer to bevel them, as shown in the drawing.
The ribs G and D are made to approach toward and recede from one another by means of a toggle-joint, one link, F, of which is pivoted to the frame A, while the other is while being Patent No. 178,246, dated June 6, 1876; application filed March 13, m76. Y l
jointed to the frame E, a lever, H, through a link, J, serving to actuate. the same.
Although I have shown and described framestowhich the ribs C and D are attached or form a part thereof, and a toggle for actuating the same, I do not confine myself to this exact construction. Any equivalent devices may be employed to accomplish the' same result.
Operation: The pencils, pen-holders, or other articles to be dipped and dried, are placed between the ribs G and D, their ends resting upon the frame A or against the bottom of the recesses in the rib or ribs O D.`
This may be done by moving said ribs over them as they come in rows from the machine which makes them, or in any other convenient manner. lThe ribs are then made to approach one another by means or other device described, and securely clamp the ends of said pencils, pen-holders, or other articles. When thus held they are carried to the vessels containing the coating material, and, after being dipped, are suspended held between said ribs until'dry, when they are removed and subjected to the'ordinary subsequent manipulations.
:By means of my invention a number of penci1s,penholders, or other articles can be securely and simultaneously clamped, so as to be dipped and dried without any danger of any of them dropping out.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. VThe combination of one or more pairs of ribs, C D, with means for regulating the depth to which the ends of the articles "are to be inserted, and means for actuating the same, substantially as described.
2. The ribs C and D, one or both of which are beveled, Asubstantially vas set forth.
3. The combination of the ribs O and D, the
frames A and E,'and the toggle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL LILIENTHAL.
