BICUSPID AND MOLAR BRIDGE TOOTH Filed Feb. 9. 1928 Patented Nov. 18,1930
,PTATENTVQOFFICE,
.. UNITED ST-ATS ROBERT w. BECK, on Lnwrs'roN, "IDAHO" BICUSIPID Ann nroLAnBnrDGE-rniirir Application filed February 9,1923. Serial no. 253,084;
' tion of the tooth next to the tissue side of the bridge, and to attain this end the invention comprehends the employment of a porcelain pontic, an occlusal block extending entirely over the occlusal end of the pontic, and means for firmly-securing the pontic and occlusal block together. A
A further object of the'invention is the provision of a tooth of the character stated wherein the means for securing the pontic v and occlusal block together shall embody an anchorcarried by the occlusal block and fit- Zt ting and cemented in a slot formed in the pontic. l f
A furtherobject of the invention is the provision of a tooth of the character stated wherein the anchor shall be of U-form and provided with a crimped cross member so as to permit it to be firmly cemented to the pontic.- V g A further object of the invention is the provision of a tooth of the character stated wherein the occlusal block shall be provided with a backing to which the anchor is secured and which has a collar or flange fitting and cemented in a circumferential groove in the r pontic.
A still further object or the invention is the provision of a tooth of the character statedwherein the side wall of the groove shall slope in the direction of the palatal end of the pontic so as to permit the collar or flange to be firmly secure'dto the pontic.
The invention is hereinafter vmore fully described and clai1ned,'and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
45. Figure 1 is a view side elevation of the tooth, 1 I V Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figuret is a plan view of the pontic of the A tooth looking at the occlusal endthereof,,;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the occlusal block of the tooth looking atthat side thereof which is connected to the pontic,
v Figure 6 is a view in side elevation, of the i pontic, and
Figure 7 is a plan-view of the blank from which the backing and its collar or flange are formed.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and designated in theseveral views of the accompanyi ing drawing, by similar reference characters.
The tooth comprises a porcelain pontic A f l I and a gold occlusalblock B) I i The pontic is provided in its palatalend '1 with a depression or vault2. The occlusal end 3 of the pontic A is flat and slopes. linguolabially towardthe occlusal end. The pontic 7 A has a circumferential groove Gwhich extends on the lingual side of the tooth from, the distal to the mesial surface thereof, and the side wall of the groove slo es toward the palatal end of the pontic. T18 pontic A is provided in its occlusal end 3 with a groove orslot 7 which is located in the center of said end and extends from the lingual face 5 in the direction of and terminates short of the buccal face 4:. The groove or slot 7 is of the dove-tail 8 type, and the'occlusal side and lingual end thereof are fully open.
' The occlusal block B which is made from gold and may be either swaged or casted, will have a contour similar to that of the toothto be replaced, and is provided witha backing plate 8. An anchor 9 of U-form and made from wire, has its side members 10 riveted or soldered to the backing 8. The cross member' 11 of theanchor 9 is crimped, and the. bends thereof are arranged in parallel relation to the backing 8. The backing 8 is provided with an anchor collar or flange- 12 which issimilar in contour to the groove 6.
The collar 12 is secured centrally between its :9
ends to the lingual end of the backing '8, and the re nainlng portion thereof 1s free of con- .nection with a backing. The backing 8 and its collar 12 may be formed from a single blank, as shown in Figure 7 The pontic A and occlusal block B are assembled in a manner to position the anchor 7 V 9 in the groove 7 and the collar 12 in the occlus'alblock B may be readily assembled V groove 6, and they are secured together by suitable cement. The cement in the groove 7 completely surrounds the anchor 9, as shown at 13. The collar 12has an interlocking contact with the side wall of the groove 6 due to the slope of said wall of the groove. It should thus be apparent that the pontic A and occlusal block B are firmly connected together.
The slope of the occlusal end 8 of the pontic V A provides extra metal over the lingual cusp and avoids an unnecessary display of gold at the buccal occlusal line angle. The ends of the collar 12 are left free of connection with the backingS so that should it be found necessary to alter the pontic A in its mesio-distal diameter, the groove 6 can bedeepened and the loose ends of the collar burnished and adapted to proper position relative to the pontic and backing 8 to which it is fastened.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that the pontic A and and securedtogether and that the connection between the parts is such as to prevent their accidental disconnection.
It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does-not pretend. to give exact proportions. Furthermore,5the said drawing is illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What is claimed is 1. A tooth comprising a pontic, a metal 00- it clusal block, one of said parts being provided with two grooves, a U-shaped anchor carried by the other of said parts, said anchor being located and cemented. in one of the grooves, the last mentioned part also being provided with a crimped cross member, and said crimped cross member being located and cemented in the other of said grooves.
2. A tooth comprising, a porcelain pontic, a metal occlusal block, one of said parts being provided with a first groove and a second groove, the other part having a U-shaped anchor and a crimped cross member, said cross member being located and cemented in the first groove and having its crimp extending transversely thereof, and the U-shaped anchor being located and cemented in the other groove.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ROBERT W. BECK.
