Be it known that I, FRANK H. RUssnLL,
in Crown and Bridge Work in Dentistry.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel mounting of metal for a crown of porcelain, or other composition, and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawin wherein Figure 1 is a bottom perspective of a molar or blcuspid crown constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the metal base plate or anchoring member therefor;
Fig. 3 is a front, or buccal, perspective of a bridge wherein the tooth is to be used showing the base plate soldered in position to the adjoining cap crowns and ready to receive the crown;
Fig. 4 is a side perspective of a cuspid, or incisor tooth, shown in detail, wherein the crown has been used in connection with a natural root; and
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of base plate.
Referring more in detail to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the tooth crown formed of porcelain, or other material, and having an overhanging projection 2. The crown is formed with a base 3 in the rear of the overhanging projection 2, said base being heel-shaped and bisected by a groove 4, at a right angle to groove 5. Said groove 4 begins at the rear edge of the base 3 and gets deeper as it approaches the point of intersection at groove 5; at this point it is deepest and approximately the same depth as groove 5. Said groove 5 is formed by the spacing of the inner, or transverse wall of the base which is straight and the opposing straight wall of the overhanging projection.
The base plate is preferably made of gold, or other metal, and consists of a bottom 6, conforming to the shape of the crown base, with a rib, or fin-like partition wall 7 and an inclined end wall 8. Walls 7 and 8 enaging in grooves 4 and 5, respectively. he ends of wall 8 may be made to. extend beyond the sides of the bottom 6, (not shown). These ends in practice may be cut off, or bent back to facilitate soldering to adjolning crowns.
9 and 11 are natural teeth supplied with cap-crowns to which has been soldered the base plate 10. .12 and 13 are, respectively, the crown and base plate. 14 is a cap-crown for a natural root and into which a pin, or post has been soldered. 15 is a natural root and 16 is solder which secures the base plate to the root cap-crown.
In practice the base 3 of the crown Fig. 1 is set onto the base plate Fig. 2 and secured thereto by a cementitious composition, rivets, screws, or other suitable means of securement (not shown). The base of the crown may extend at any angle although that shown is preferred. The crown projection may extend at any angle from the groove 5, or the inner face may be extended in the plane of the adjacent wall of groove 5 as depicted.
The crown may be made either with the overhanging pro ection, as shown, or without.
The groove 4t may extend across the en tire length of the base 3 or only part way from groove 5.

I claim 1. An artificial tooth comprising a crown having a base formed with a flat grooved bottom and an overhanging projection separated from the base by a groove and a metal plate with two upstanding walls engaging in said grooves.
2. An artificial tooth having a transverse groove in combination with an anchoring element having a member extending approximately transverse thereof and outwardly therefrom and engaging in said groove.
3. An artificial tooth having a transverse groove and a groove at right angles thereto in combination with a plate having a transverse flange engaging in the transverse be of any dimensmooth sides, as
groove and a longitudinal rib engaging in said second named groove.
4:. An artificial tooth including a crown having in its bottom a groove extending across the same near one end, and an opening therein located rearwardly of said groove and extending upwardly from the face of the bottom, and a metal plate to fit a ainst the bottom of the crown provided with a flange extending across the same near one end, and an upstanding part in rear of the flange to respectively engage the said groove and opening in the bottom of the crown. An artificial tooth including a crown having in its bottom grooves extending at an angle to each other, and a metal plate to fit against the bottom of the crown and provided with upstanding angularly disposed vided with an upstanding flange engaging the said groove in the bottom, the flange having a portion extending beyond one edge of the plate and adapted to be used as fastening means.
