, This inventionrelates to centrifugal'extractors, and moreparticularly to extractors of the kind provided with a timing device by which the extractor is automatically stopped after a predetermined time of operation. In the known extractors of this kind the timing device must be set afresh. for the desired length of operation before the beginning of each operation.
The invention has for its main object to provide a centrifugal extractor the timing device and-cooperative parts of which are constructed and arranged in such a manner that the length of operation for which the timing device has once been set is automatically maintained throughout any desired number of successive operations, which means that the attendant need not pay any attention tothe timing device before or when starting the extractor for a period of operationcorresponding to the preceding operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simplified and inexpensive mechanism 26 for starting and stoppin the extractor.
Still another object of t e invention is the provision of simple and efiective means combined with the starting and stopping mechanism for locking the cover in its closed position during the operation of the extractor and allowing the same to be opened only upon the basket drive having been cut out.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompany-- 85 ing drawing in which:
Fig. :1 is a fractional side elevation of the extractor, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view with the mechanisms in the position they assume during the operation of the extractor, some parts being in section and some broken away; Fig. 3 is atsimilar plan viewwith the mechanisms in the position they assume when the extractor is at rest.
The casing a which contains the rotatable basket I; has attached to it a bracket 0. A
hand lever 1 is fixed on a shaft 1 which is mounted in the bracket '0 and carries a pinion I 2 which engages a rack 3 formed on a bolt 3. This bolt is mounted for limited axial shifting movement in the bracket 0. The bolt is locked in one of its terminal positions by a latch 4 adapted to engage a notch 3 of the bolt 3 by a projection 4 and held in locking position by a spring 5. The bolt 3 is surrounded by a spring 6 which bears with one end against a flange 6 of the bolt and with its other end against the bracket 0. This spring constitutes the stopping and braking power of the controlling mechanism and in the one terminal position of the bolt- 3, which is shown in Fig. 2, is held in a compressed condition. The hand lever 1 is con nected by a rod 7, a bell crank lever 8 and link 9 with the belt shifter 10 by means of which the driving belt can be shifted from 5 the loose pulley 11 to the fast pulley 12 and vice versa. The hand lever 1 is likewise connected through the bell crank lever 8, a link 13 and a double lever 14 with the brake band 15 of the extractor basket 6, 16 is the disc' of the timing mechanism. The timing mechanism includes a suitable speed reduction gearing (not shown which is operated by an endless. rope 17 rom the basket spindle c and through which a slow rotation is imparted to the disc 16. The reduction gearing of the timing device isof such a kind that the disc 16. will make one full revolution for a desired maximum period of operation of the extractor. When it is desired to operate the extractor always at the maximum length of operation, the disc is provided at its periphery with one cam 18. \Vhen the operations of the extractor should be shorter, the disc is provided with more cams 18 which are equidistantly fastenedontheperiphery of the disc. When the period of operation is, for instance, desired to be half the maximum period of operation, the disc is provided with two equally spaced cams, and. when itshould only be one fourth of the maximum period of operation, it is provided with four equally spaced cams. The cams 18 are designed to co-operate with the nose 4 of the latch 4 for releasing this latch at the end of each period of operation. The cover 19 of the extractor is connected through a link 20 with a pin 21 which is likewise shiftable in the bracket 0 but in a direction transverse to the bolt 3. When the extractor is in operation (Fig. 2) the pin 21 bears with its free end against the bolt 3 so that the cover cannot be opened. When the extractor'is stopped (Fig. 3), a recess 22 of the bolt 3 comes into registration with the pin 21 so that the same can be moved into this recess and the cover opened. Stops 23, 24:, serve to limit the swinging movement of the latch 4 under the action of the spring 5.
The operation of the device is as follows: It is assumed that the timing device is set for the maximum period of operation, in which case the disc 16 carries only one cam 18 as shown in the drawing. When the exaccording to Fig. 3 into the'full-line position shown in Fig. 2. Thereby the spring 6 is compressed, i. e. it is placed under tension, the latch 4 by its projection 4f engages the notch 3" of the bolt 3 locking the same against movement, the belt shifter 10 moves the drivin belt from the loose pulley 11 to the fast pu ley 12, and the brake band 15 is released, so that the basket 0 starts rotating and through its spindle 0 immediately sets the timing device into operation so that the disc 16 begins its rotation. Shortly before the disc terminates its revolution it strikes by its cam 18 against the latch ,4 (Fig. 2) and trips the same in such a manner that it releases the bolt 3. The bolt then moves un-,
der the action of the spring 6 into the position shown in Fig. 3, causing the driving belt to be moved from the fast pulley 12 to the loose pulley 11 and the brake band 15 to be applied through the intermediary of the gear parts 2, 1, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14. The extractor basket slows down until it comes to a standstill and extractor, the time of operation for which the disc is set being automatically maintained. and so on. Further changes in' the period of operation can be attained by a proper selection of the wheels of the speed reduction gearing of the timing device.
For facilitating the charging andemptying of the extractor basket, it is sometimes desirable to rotate the basket for a short piece y hand. To this end, the brake band must be relieved and held in inoperative position. This is done by moving the hand lever 1 from'the full-line position into the dot-anddash-line position 1 of Fig. 3, this movement being sufficient to relieve the brake band 15. In order to hold the lever 1 in the dot-and-dash-line position the bolt 3 is provided with an opening 25 which in the said position 1 registers with a pin 26 which is shiftable in the bracket 0 and pushed into the opening 25. The recess 22 of the bolt 3 which is engaged by the pin 21 when the cover is open, is of such a length that it permits the short shifting movement of the bolt 3 caused by the movement of the lever 1 from.
, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a centrifugal extractor, a rotatable basket, a mechanism for starting and stopping the rotation of the basket, latching means for locking this mechanism during the starting and working of the extractor, power means for automatically moving the said mechanism into stopping position when released, a continuously one.way rotatable timing member actuated by the basket drive and designed to make not more than one revolution at each operation of the extractor, at

least one releasing element carried by the timing member for delimiting the amount of rotation of this member and the length of each operation of the extractor, said element being adapted to actuate the said latching means for releasing the starting and stopping mechanism at the end of each section of rotation of the timing member and to assume the starting position of the section of rotation for the succeeding operation.
2. In a centrifugal extractor, a rotatable basket, a timing disc adapted to be slowly rotated by the basket drive a number of equally spaced cams detachably fastened to the periphery of the timing disc, a mechanism for starting and stopping the rotation of the basket, a latch for locking this mechanism during the starting and working of the extractor, power means for automatically moving the said mechanism into the stopping position when released, the said latch being arranged totproject into the path of the cams of the disc and adapted to be tripped into releasing position by one of the cams at the end of each section of rotation of the disc which is determined by the peripheral distance between the cams.
bracket, a bolt mounted for limited axial shifting movement in this bracket, a spring adapted to be placed under tension when the said bolt is moved into its one terminal position, a latch for locking the bolt in this terminal position, a nose on this latch adapted to be engaged by one of the cams of the timing disc at the end of each section of rotation of the same for'tripping the latch to unlock the bolt, a hand lever swingably mounted in the saidsupporting bracket, operative connecting means between the lever and the controller for the basket driving means and the basket brake, a gearing between the lever and the said bolt designed to move the bolt into the said terminal position and tension the spring when the lever is swung into one of its extreme positions in which it also relieves the brake and throws in the basket drive, to hold the lever in this position as long as the said bolt is locked and return the lever into its other extreme position by the action of the said spring when the said bolt is unlocked, thereby cutting out the basket drive and simultaneously applying the basket brake.
4. In a centrifugal extractor, a casing, a cover for the casing, a rotatable basket in the casing, driving means for the basket, a coned to be tripped bythe timing device to unlock the bolt at the end of each operation of "the extractor, a pin movably connected with the cover and adapted to be held against movement by the said bolt when the same is locked by the said latch, a recess in the said bolt adapted to register with the said pin .when the bolt is released by the latch and to receive the pin; when the cover is opened, and a swingable hand lever having operative connection with the controller for the basket drive, with the basket brake and with the said bolt and adapted to simultaneously relieve the brake, shift the controller into starting and the bolt into the spring tensioning position when manually swung into-one of its extreme positions and to be automatically swung by the said spring into its other extreme position when the bolt is unlocked to cut out the basket drive andapply the brake;
