IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,196, dated May 30, 1876; application filed May 18, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. SNYDER, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bale-tie, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tie and band in the same. My bale-tie is made of a single piece of sheet metal, A, of square or nearly square form, and provided in or near the center with two parallel slots, at a. Near one end of the plate-A are two inclined slots, b b, theinnerends of which are cut straight out through the edge of the plate, forming a center tongue, d, and two side lips, e c, asshown in Fig. 2. The plate A, as thus constructed, is stamped out at one operation or blow of dies made for that purpose, and at the same time the part 0 of the plate between the slots at a. is slightly raised, while the part B at one end, and the part D, with tongue 01, at the other end, are slightly depressed, as shown more fully in Fig. 3. By the same operation the lips e e are also turned upward at right angles. G is the ordinary band of strap-iron to pass around the bale. One end of this band is passed over the part B of the plate, through the first slot a, and turned backward under the same. The other end of the band is passed over the part D, down through the slot at, under the part 0, and up through the slot at, and'the band then turned backward over said parts 0 and D, when the lips e e are pressed down on top of the same, and thus holding the band firmly, as it were, between the tongue 01 and lips e e. The tie can be made very cheaply, is easily and quickly applied, and can be used over and over again.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The within-described bale-tie, consisting of the plate A, having the parallel slots at a, inclined angular slots b b, tongue 01, and lips e e, and stamped, substantially as and for the purposes hereiu set forth.
