IMPROVEMENT IN ASBESTUS PACKI NGS.
v Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,192, dated May 30, 1876 application filed v April 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatv I, JOHN S. RosENTHAL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Asbestus Packing, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement inthat class of packing which is composed mainly of asbestus; and the object of my invention is to make this packing more compact, durable, and otherwise more available for the purpose than that heretofore made.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a piece of my improved packing, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section.
In carrying out my invention I prepare an asbestos board, in accordance with the patent granted to me on the 20th day of August, 1872. I cut this board into strips, and use any desired number of layers in the manufacture of the packing. In the present instance there arethree layers, a, b, and c, placed side by side and confined by a cover, d, of braid, net-work, wrapping, or suitable fabric, both the strips and covering being impregnated with an appropriate lubricant. The
central layer is thus covered before it is comblned with the others. A continuous rope of packing m. y be made by arranging the strips as shown in Fig. 2-that is, in length,.placed end to end, the joints between one series of strips being situated between the joints of the other series.- of asbestus board will in a measure depend upon the size of the packing, the shape of the strips being in accordancewith the desired shape of the said packing.
I do not desire to claim broadly the use of asbestus in the manufacture of packing; but
I claim as my invention- A packing, composed of strips of asbestus board, made in accordance with the patent granted to me on the 20th day of August, 1872, N 0. 130,663, the said strips being arranged side by side in lengths, the inner strip or strips being wrapped with fabric or braid, and the whole wrapped with aseparate fabric or braid, as set forth.
