Description

G. T. IRWIN LOCKING DEVICE Nov. 11, 1930.

Patented Nov. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES GEORGE THOMAS IRWIN, OF T'ORONTO,ONTARIO, CANADA LOCKING nnvrcni,
Application filed February 2, 1928, Serial N of 2 5l,42l, and in Canada March 4, 19 27. p
My invention relates'to improvements in locking devices, and the object: of the invention. is to devise a locking device particularly adaptable to lamps'of the candelabra type and other devices inwhich a standard and base are incorporated, in which the looking device for locking'the standard and base is hidden from view so that it cannot'be interfered with andthe standard inadvertent ly loosened in the base sothat it will not retain its truevertical position, and yet which at the same time may be quickly assembled and disassembled whenever necessary with- Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view-through a base and the standard supported in the base and my locking connection between the standard and base. I
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section 3 throu 'h the central oortion of the base showing the lower end of the standard, a receiving socket and'locking key in elevation.
In the'drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each uguie.
1 indicates the base ofa device such as a candelabra lamp, crucifix, mass card holder or other similar device. 1
2 is a standard which is in the form of'a pole and which is supported centrally in the base. The central portion of the base is pro-.
vided with an orifice 1 surrounding which on the lower face of the base isan annular flange 1,the downwardly directed face of 4 which is of ratchet formation as indicated at 3. Extending upwardly from the base and also surrounding the orifice 1 1s a sleeve bearing 4 provided at its upper end with an annular bearing face 4* corresponding in diameter to the diameter of the orifice 1 5is a socket in which the lower end of the standard pole 2 is received, being secured therein by securing. screws 5*.
7 and 8 are loops depending from the socket 5 and depending below the surface T l ie-upper end of the socket 5 is provided with an annular flange 5 which when the socket :isinposition rests upon'the top' of the sleeve hearing t, the upper portion of the socket fitting withinthe' annular bearing face 4* and the lower portion within the orifice 1 thereby holding the socket in a true vertical position.
.VVhen-it is desired to secure the socket in place the key 9 is passed through theloops 7 and 8 so as to bear against the ratchet surface 3, and when forced manually longitudinally to a fairly tight position the socket is turned by the operator manually gripping the key so as'to force the ends of thekey up the inclined surfaces ofthe ratchet 3 and thereby draw the standard downward and the flange 5 into tight engagement with the upper end of the sleeve bearing 4 so as-to' securely lock the parts in place by the frictional contact of a key 9 withthe ratchetsurface 3 and thereby preventing the standard pole being turned inadvertently from a position above the base.
It will be understood that devices such as I have described used at funerals must be such as can be operated quickly and noiselessly, and yet which will positively prevent the inadvertent turning of the standard pole by any unauthorized person handlingthe same. i p
Hitherto standard poles of this type have been connectedto'the baseby means of a threaded engagement and which permitted? of the standard pole being turned in the base by any onlooker at the funeral so that it will become loosened and assume an inclined position in the base presenting a very unsightly and disorderly appearance, orby a pin which loosely held the polein the base so that it never assumed atrue vertical position.
My device provides very simple means whereby this defect is overcome, insuring that the standard will be securely locked in the base by means which is invisible to the ordinary observer, and which therefore: will 2 H menses not be interfered with so that the standard will become loosened and which may be assembled and disassembled quickly without noise.
What'I claim as my invention is In a locking device; a base member provided with cylindrical verticalv bearing open at bothendsQan annularratchet extending around the lower opening of the bearing,
a cylindrical member fitting in the bearing and turnable therein and provided with an elarged portion at its :upper end engaging the upper end of the bearing, loop members formed integral with thecylindricabmemher and extending downwardly through the lower open end of the bearing, awedge key extending through the loop portion and bearing nad'j acent each 2 end 1 against the aforesaid ratchet surfaces-so thatwhenthe cylin drical memberv is turned within the bearing the key; ends will-be carried circulnferentielly in to; wedging contact: with the aforesaid ratchotsurfacesh 1 GEORGE THOMAS IRWIN.
