SMOKE-BELL;
,To'lZwhom--fzifmy commi y -Be it known that I, MARGARET S. DAM- BAoH, a citizen of the United States of" America, residing at Beaver Falls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented 4certain. new yand useful Improvements in Smoke-Bells, of whichv the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to smoke bells, especially designed for chandeliers, gas ljets and other fixtures that are suspended from a ceiling or similar support.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a smoke bell that can be detachably connected to a ceilin to protect the ceiling from'the smoke an fumes emitted by a gas iame.
Another object of this invention is to furnish a ceiling with a Vsocket in which a smoke bell can be mounted when it is desired to use the same, the socket being al permanent fixture that is inexpensive to manufacture and easy to' install duringthe construction of a ceiling.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will A be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now beY had to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of the ceiling provided with a smoke-bell,
Y and Fig. 2 is an enlarged verticaltsectional view of one of the smoke-bells partly broken away.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a portion of the ceiling provided with anopening 2 for a cylindrical socket 3, said socket having an annular flange 4 countersunk in the innerv lside of the ceiling l, said iange retaining the socket within the opening 2.
The reference numeral 5 denotes the tube` or hollow stem having the lower end thereof provided with a conical shaped hood, said hood having the lower edges thereof ornamented, as at 7 to present a neat and attractive appearance.
' In the upper end of the tube orstem 5 there is mounted by rivets 8 or otherfastening means, a resilient locking member 9, said member protruding from the upper end of the tube or stem and having a hookv 10 that is adapted to extendover theupper end of the tube or stem andy engage' the ange 4c ofthe socket 2. The locking memySpeeiieaton. of Letters ate'nt:

ber 9l hasva-,push-pin 11 thatvextends through an opening 12 provided therefor in the tube or stem 5. f
By pushing inwardly upon the pin 1,1, the f the stem hollow, such heat that is generated,
by a chandelier 13 or other gas fixture,`passes upwardly through the stem into the space between the ceiling and the floor above said ceiling.
The smoke-bell can be made of light and durable metal and of various sizes, and it is obvious that it can be used in connection with a chandelier having a plurality of burners or in connection with a single gas jet.
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such modiications as` fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. 'A- smoke bell comprising a anged socket adapted to be secured in the lower section of a hollow ceiling, a hollow cylindrical stem extending into said socket, a hood integral with the lower end of said stem, and a resilient locking member arranged at the upper end of the stem and capable of engaging the flange of said socket for detachably suspending the stem from the lower section of said ceiling.
2. A smoke bell comprising a Yflanged socketV adapted to be secured to the lower section ofa hollow ceilinga hollow cylindrical stem having its upper. end extending into said socket, a hood integral with the lower end of the stem, a resilient member arranged within said stem and having its lower end iXedly secured to thestem and its upper end provided with a hook for engaging the ange of said socket forV detachably suspendingy the stem, and means carried by the stem and capable of being shifted inwardly to engage said member for moving thelatter from engagement with said socket the lower section of a hollow ceiling, a hood said stem and capable when actuated of l0 integral with the lower end of said stem, shifting said member to release the stem.
and a resilient member arranged within the In testimony whereof I affix my signature upper portion of the stem and having its in the presence of two witnesses.
lower end fixed to the stem and its upper end provided with a hook for overlapping the MARGARET S' DAMBACH' upper face of said lower section of the ceil- Witnesses:
ing thereby suspending the stem, and shit MAX H. SRoLovlTz, able means carried by the upper portion of I CHRISTINA T. HOOD.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five -cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
