ELECTRIC RQN Filed Feb. 1, 1929 L JN/ENTOR.
A TTORNEYS 5 ing from an electrical source and 50 made therein,
Patented Nov. 11, 1930 PATENT GFFCE PHILIP S. CAMPBELL, GET HOUSTON, TEXAS ASSIG-NOR- F ONE-HALF TO lMARCI-I CUL- MORE, OF HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS ELECTRIC IRON Application filed February 1, 1929. Serial No. 336,728.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an electric iron.
One object of the invention is to provide a smoothing iron adapted to be hand operated and electrically heated and having' a roller which may be passed over the clothing and which will smooth the same with a minimum of friction and without injury to the clothing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which may be very easily operated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
The figure shows a sectional View of the device.
In the drawing the numeral 1 designates the handle, as a whole, which is formed to provide a convenient hand grip. Anchored to one end of the handle are the diverging tubular side bars 2, 2, whose free ends have thc bearings 3, 3. The numeral 4 designates a roller formed of any suitable material and having the end stub shafts 5, 5 which are journaled in the bearings 3, 3. Within the roller 4 there is an electrical heater coil 6 which is insulated from the roller and which is electrically connected with the stub shafts. There are the electrical conductors 7, 8 leadsuitably insulated which extend axially through the handle 1 and through the side bars 2 and are connected with the stub shafts 5, 5. There o is a switch 9 mounted in the handle 1 through which an electrical circuit through the conductor 8 may be completed or broken. When the implement is not in use the switch 9 is open and when said implement is in use, said 5 switch is closed to complete the circuit through said heating element 6.
Vhile I have shown what I now consider to be the preferred form of the invention, it is obvious that mechanical changes may be and equivalents substituted for the parts shown within the invention.
What I claim is:
An electric iron including a handle, diverging side bars anchored, at one end, to one end of the handle and whose free ends are turned into parallel relation and provided with inside sockets, a roller having a stub shaft at each end journaled in the respective sockets, an electrical heating element within and insulated from the roller and electrically connected with said shafts, current conductors leading from a suitable source through said handle and through said side bars Vand electrically connected with said shafts, said side bars being adapted to be sprung apart to permit the detachment of the roller therefrom and a circuit maker and breaker in said handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication.
PHILIP S. CAMPBELL.
