Description
Patented Nov. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES i T FI 'E CLARENCE G. CARL-SON, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNon T ornoAGo CURTAIN s'rnn'rcnnn COMPANY, OFVCHIGAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION ornmmors,
CURTAIN srnn'ror-rnn Application filed December 17 -1928. Serial-No. 326,551.
This invention relates to curtain stretchers and particularly to folding stretchers wherein two sections of a side or end member are hinged together so that they may be folded for convenient disposition when the stretcher is not in use.
The invention comprises certain improvements on the stretcher covered by Letters Patent No. 991,781 patented May 9, 1911.
The object of the invention is to lock the hinge and the sections of the member together rigidly and securely for maintaining the stretcher sections in aligned position and prevent the member from yielding or breaking joint at the hinge.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel locking device for cooperation with the hinge at the joint between the abutting ends of the sections for securing the hinge and the sections rigidly together in open position.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a selected embodiment of the invention Fig. l is a top plan view of the hinged ends of two side member sections of the stretcher in open position;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the part shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the hinged joint partly open; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 5 represents one of the side members of a curtain stretcher frame and comprising the sections 6 and 7 which are connected together by a hinged joint. The hinge comprises the two hinge plates 8 and 9 which are pivoted together at 10 and are applied to the bottom ofthe top of the section 7 and this plate and the v hinge plate 9 are secured to the section by the rivet 16. The plate 15isbent at and at 18 to provide a crowned yielding locking portion having a downward projecting shoulder 19'and anuptu'rnedend 20. The plate V 13 has an up-bent shoulder 21 and a downwardly extending end 22; The shoulder 19 is arranged to ride over the shoulder 21 when the hinge is closed 7 and the sections are aligned, Fig. 1, and thenthe shouldered end portion of the plate13 lies under the crowned portion between the shoulders 17,18 of the plate 15, and the shouldered end portion 19 of the plate 15 lies above the plate 1 3 behind the shoulder 21. A bolt 23 passes through the plate 15, between the abuttingends of'the sections throughaslot'Sin the plate 8 and through an opening in the plate 9, and carries a wing nut 24. The end of the section 7 is provided with a groove 7"to'accommodate the bolt 23 and the end of the section; 6 also has a groove 6 which registers with the 'groove 8 -i n the p1ate -8 and with a groove 13' in thefreeend of the plate'13' to accom modate the bolt which is centered,when the hingeis closed, in the joint between the ends of the sections; f 3 i In practice'the'stretcher is usually-folded for storage and the wijng nut is loosenedon the bolt. In closing thehingethe shoulder 19 rides over the-shoulder 21 to' the position shown in Fig. 4 with the 'sections6 7 aligned and their ends abutting. "Then thewing nut is tightened and the overlapping portions of the hinge plates are clamped together and upon the joint of the sections and the[yielding shouldered end portion of the plate 15 is clamped tightly upon' the'shouldered'end portion of the plate 13=thereby locking the parts together with'the sections rigid in alignment.- The shoulders on theplates 13, 15 provide an interlocking engagement which is maintained-by thebolt and nut 231j24 which also clamp the spring plates'togeth'er; and upon the sections whereby a rigid joint is obtained" and maintained throughout the i use of the-stretcher. 1 The-crowned portion of-theplate 15 is yielding-so that the-shouli der 19 will ride over the shoulder 21 in closing and in opening the hinge. The invention 7 provides a novel and simple means for join- Nov. 11, 1930. v. CARROLL 1,780,996
7 COFFEE URN Filed Jan. 11, 1926 Patented Nov. 11 1930 d'lvincnizr 1). cannon, or' oiironeqf rtinors g p I corrnnumvf f" My invention relates to coffee urns.
It relates more particularly to temperature. controlling devices for the types of coffee urns commonly used in lunchrooms,restaurants,
[5 etc.
In the use of coffee urns prior tomy-invem tion, the supply ofgas or other fiuid fu'elto the burner has been manually regulated; ":Due
to the carelessnessor"forgetfulness ofthose 10 having charge of makingthecoffeeythe coffee frequently was notheatedto the proper temperature or the burner was at times unneces;
sarily left burning at full pressure, resulting in a waste of gas and occasionallyin the burn ing out of the bottom of the urn.
It isaniobj ect of my invention to provide ,a simple and efiecti'vefmeans for automatically controlling the temperature ofthe coffee.
1 A further obj ect is to provide means by which a coflee urn may be readily adapted to be equipped with my regulating device.
. A further object is toprovide a fuel saving device for coffee-urns. I v i A further object is to provide; a simple safety device for preventing eXcessi-vedifferences of pressure between the atmosphere and the inside of the water container of the urn and for indicating when the, waterzlevel' in the containerisilow. a a c v Other objects will appear from the following' specification, and reference being; made to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is an elevation of a water "heater and a coffee urn,' the'latter being shown 'partly in section. 1 Figure 2 is a section of'the regulator taken on line 2-2 of Fig.1. v .1 s
Figure 3 is a'section of the by-pass valve taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 isan enlarged plain view tion'ofthe sealingring. 1 p
i-Figure5 is an enlarged sectional 'view thereof, taken on the line 5'- -5 of Fig.4. Y A water heater 6; shown in outline form in Figure 1, is ordinarily used to supply-hot 'wa f a'porter to one or'more coffee urns'f; being connected thereto by .a pipe 8 in whichfthe flow is regulated by a valve 9. The cofiee urn-com; prises a container 10 mounted on legs-11, and having a removablejcover 12." A' coifee jar 13,
in the container by means of the draught pipe 14 which passes through the side of the container, and its outer endis equipped with. a l I faucetl5,j The coffee bag 16 is suitably supported injthe top of ithe1coffee jar13..1 A flanged ring 17 resting upon the top edge of the coffee jarv craus'es'the supply water-from the pipe 8 and the. condensation from thetop ofthe container to drain into the jar. :The'
1 usually ma deofnvitrified chinai-is supported 7 space between the jar and the container is 1 partly filled with-water which is heatedby a burner 18, which is represented as a gas bur-n5 er suppliedwith gasby the pipe 19. Y 1 I Thesupply of'gas'to'th'sburner, as will be hereinafter,described, is. regulated by pressure generated in the space 1 surrounding the cofiee ar It; is therefore necessary to seal this'space from the atmosphere. I accomplish this by means of;a;n-annular rubber tube 20 which fits between-the outer surface of the jar13at its upper edge, and the in-v ner surface of the container. After the tube is inplace it is compressed'to fo-rma tighter seal by tighteningfithe closelyspaced screws 21 which pass freely through the semi-cylim drical Washers 22, diametrically through the tube 2O,'and are threadedthenuts 23 which are similar-to the washers in shape. The Washers 2 2 have pin-like projections 22? which are formed by an incomplete punching op eration. The washers 22 are connected by links 24 which have elongated slots 2 P -fitting; over the projections 22. Thew provision ;of these slots permits 7 the tube to; be cut to a standard lengthandtO bestr'etched to fit. slightly varying sized containers. It will be obvious thatiby tightening the screws 21, the tube willbe laterally deformedjto form a seal between thejar and the container which will be sufiiciently tightto hold the small pressures which I use in my regulating device.
