IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOR-SCRUBBERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 178,095, dated May 30, 1876; application filed March 18, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. BALOH, of Hingham, in Sheboygan county, State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Floor-Scrubbers; and that improvement I will particularly describe it.

A is the scrubber-head or box, provided with ahandle, 0, whereby it may be conveniently manipulated. The front side of the box A is open, and is provided with a lid, D, hinged to the box A, so that said lid may swing open along the bottom edge, as shown in Fig. 3. One or more strips ofrubber, E, are secured to the lower edge of the lid D. The lower edges of said strips of rubber project about the same distance from the edge of the lid, and far enough to strike the floor, and act as rubbers in scrubbing the same. When so employed it is not desirable that the lil D should open, and a button, F, is therefore placed upon the top of the box A in such position as will, when turned one way, cause it to strike the top of the lid D, and prevent the same from opening, and when turned the opposite way it will not touch said lid. Said button, therefore, causes the lid D to become rigid with the box A, or permits it to open and close freely, as may be desired. When the floor is to be scrubbed, water is thrown upon it, and the india-rubber strips E are rubbed back and'forth in the water until the floor is thereby scrubbed clean. Itis then required' to remove the water, and for this purpose the button F is turned around so as to release the lid D, and permit it to open, when the box is moved backward and receives the water, which is thereby forced upward along the back of said strip into the box A, as shown in Fig. 3. To facilitate and direct this flow a beveled strip, (1, is placed along the inner side of the lid D. A spring, G, placed upon the top of the box A, and arranged to rest against the upper edge of the lid D, causes the said lid to close immediately, when the backward motion of the box A ceases. The water contained within the box A may .be discharged into the slop -pail through the hole a.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new isp 1. The box A, provided with a handle, 0, combined with a hinged lid, D, to which one or more scrubbing strips of rubber, E, are attached, and the expansion-spring G on the outside of said box, substantially for the purpose set forth.

2. Combined with the box A and the hinged lid D, spring G, and strips E, the button F, closing against the upper edge of said lid, to keep the same closed when desired.
