This invention relates to 'a gas'seal for furnaces, that is particularly useful in connection with boiler furnaces, and will be understood from the description in connection 85 with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a section through the device taken along the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a partial side view of the device, Fig. 3 is a section, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4 is a section along the line 44 of Fig. 3, and
Figs. 5 and 6 are front and side views, respectively, of one .of the details.
In the drawings, reference character 1 indicates the mud drum of a water tube boiler that has banks of water tubes 2 and 3 con nected thereto in the well-known manner.
The rear wall of the furnace is made up of tile 5 and a row of wall cooling tubes 6. The
tubes 6 are curved at their upper ends and are connected to a header 7 that is, in turn,
connected by means of the connection 8 to the water circulation system of the boiler.
The mud drum 1 and the header 7 are permitted to move relatively to each other due to expansion and contraction. A gas sealing plate 9 is hung from the hook member 10 that is attached to the drum 1 and the lower curved end of the plate 9 rests upon an enlargement 11 on a portion of the setting 4, through which enlargement the tubes 12 that are connected to the drum 1 pass.
A series of metal blocks 15 is connected to the tubes 5. These blocks are made up to have rounded end portions 16 that fit against the tubes as the blocks are placed between the tubes, and each block is provided with a projection or dowel pin 17. The blocks 15 are attached to the tubes 6 by being clamped thereto by means of the clamps 18. Bolts 19 pass through the clamps 18 and are screwed into the blocks 15 to clamp them to the tubes. A. series of blocks 20 without dowel pins'is located a slight distance below the blocks 15 and are clamped against the tubes'in a similar manner, by means of the clamps 18 and bolts 19.
A horizontal row oftile 22 is disposed along the upper edge of the wall of tile 5 and rests upon this wall and the blocks 15 and 20. Each one of the tile 22 is provided with an offset portion 23 so shaped as to provide an open space 24 into which the dowel pin 17 projects. The upper inner side of each one of the tile 22 is provided with a smooth face portion 25 to provide a sliding joint between these tile and a suspended wall that will be described below.
A supporting member 26, Z-shaped in cross-section, is attached to the drum 1, as, for example, by welding the same thereto, and a metal plate or plates 27 having its upper'edge bent over to form 'a lip,-as shown at 28, is suspended from the supporting member 26. The plate may be provided with projections 29 extending under a portion of the supporting member 26. The lower end of the plate 27 is provided with an outwardly projecting flange 30 to form a rest or support for a row of tile 31 and a row of cross tile 32 is laid along the upper edge of the tile 31, so as to contact with the drum 1 and'close the space between the tile 31 and this drum. Collars '33 are provided on the tubes 6 near the header 7 and stops 34 are carried by the collars 33 and spaced at sufiicient distances from the tile 22 to permit the suspended wall of tile 31 and plate 27 to pass between the tile 22 and the stops 34. I
The operation is as follows: lVhen the drum 1 and header 7 move at right angles to their axes with respect to each other due to expansion and contraction caused by changes in temperature, the suspended wall of tile 31 slides with respect to the row of tile 22 and, as the faces of the respective tile are in con tact with each other, leakage of gases by the joint is prevented. It will be understood that it is desired that the gases or hot products of combustion from the furnace should pass across the bank of tubes 2 and above the drum 1, and thence across the bank of tubes 3 without being permitted to pass to the right in the space below the drum 1 and that the suspended wall and the wall at the rear of the furnace that are provided with a sliding joint, effectively prevent the undesirable passage of the gases through this space.
It will be obvious that the tile 22 can be removed and replaced simply [by lifting the tile off of the dowel pins and that changes 9 and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. The combination in a boiler of a row of wall tubes, a second wall located above said tubes and having its lower edge positioned adjacent the upper portions of said tubes, tile supporting members mounted on the upper portions of said tubes in thermal contact therewith, a row of junction tile positioned on said supports and slidably engaging the lower portion of said second wall, and tile engaging members formed on said supports so as to enable said tile to be removed therefrom by a vertical movement.
2. The combination in a boiler of a row of walltubes, a second wall located above said tubes and having its lower edge positioned adjacent the upper portions of said tubes, tile supporting members mounted on the upper portions of said tubes, a row of junction tile positioned on said supports and slidably engaging the adjacent face of said second wall and tile holding members on said supports formed so as to enable-said tile to be removed therefrom.
3. The combination in a boiler of a row of wall tubes, a second wall located above said tubes and having its lower edge positioned adjacent the upper portions of said tubes, tile supporting members mounted on said upper portions of said tubes in thermal contact therewith and provided with outwardly extending dowels and a row of refractory junction blocks positioned so as to close the space between said tubes and said second wall and having recesses for receiving said dowels and supporting said tile in position.'
4:. The combination in-a boiler of a row of wall tubes, a second wall located above said tubes and having its lower edge positioned adjacent theupper portions of said tubes, tile supporting members including metal blocks secured to-the upper portions of said tubes,
