STEAM BOILER AND SETTING THEREFOR.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Short Hills, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Steam Boiler and Setting Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention more particularly relates to a. steam boiler and its setting in which the front upper steam and water drum is spaced from the plane of the front wall. In accordance with my invention provision is made for effectively spanning the space between the top of the wall and the drum.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated the preferred form thereof, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a steam boiler and its setting embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front View, partially in section, taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 4

Referring to the drawings, I have illus-- trated my invention in connection with a boiler of the Stirling type provided with a lower mud drum 10 connected to front, middle and rear upper steam and water drums 11, 12 and 13, respectively, by banks of tubes 14, 15 and 16, over which the gases are directed by baflles 17 and 18 disposed at the rear of the front and middle banks, respectively, and cross bafiies 19 and 20 in the last pass, the baffles directing the gases, as 'indi cated by the arrows, to an outlet fine 21. A superheater 22 is preferably disposed between the front and middle banks of tubes,
as indicated. The front and middle drums l1 and 12 are connected by water circulators 23 and steam circulators 24, and the middle and rear drums 12 and 13 are connected by water circulators 25 and steam circulators 26.
In the form of my invention here illustrated, the front furnace wall, indicated generally at 27, is located above an underfeed stoker 28 and comprises two sections 27 and 27*, the wall extending to the upper portion of the front bank of tubes. The section 27 is supported by a plate 29 located adjacent to the top ledge of the stoker, as indicated. while the section 27 which is offset from the section 27 and forms a slip joint therewith at 30, is supported on I-beams 31.
Under some conditions, particularly where the wall is formed in sections as illustrated, with the top section offset outwardly from the lower section, the space between the to]: of the wall 27 and the front steam and watei drum 11 is so great that it is not possible to corbel the top of the wall to the steam and water drum in the usual manner. In ac cordance with my invention, a suspended roof or arch, preferably flat as illustratec and indicated generally at 32, spans the space, or at least a portion of the space, between the top of the wall 27 and the steam and water drum 11. In the form of my invention here shown, the arch is supported by an I-beam 33 extending across the front of the boiler and supported at its ends in the side walls 34, as indicated in Fig. 2. Supporting plates 35 are, in turn, supported by the I-beam 33, and are preferably provide! with notches 36 conforming to the lower flange and lower web portion of the I-beani 33, so that when engaging therewith, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, they are supported by the lower flange thereof. Tiles 37 are pro vided with grooves 38 which engage hori zontal flanges 39 formed on the plates 35, which flanges support the tiles, the tiles protecting the supporting metal work from the furnace heat. The lower faces of the tilc= at the outer end of the arch rest on the top of the wall 27, the tiles, with the plates 35 on which they are strung, forming a substantially rigid structure, supported on the lower flange of the l beain 33, and preferably having a limited pivotal movementthereon, so that the outer end of the arch will rise and fall with the wall under differences in expansion between the wall and the boiler, and maintain a seal between the outer end of the arch and the top of the wall, it being understood that the portion. of the arch at the right of the beam 33 is heavier than that at the left thereof. The front of the brick roof 40 above the steam and water drum 11 may conveniently be supported from the beam 33, a pad or packing 41 of asbestos or the like preferably being interposed between the upper side of the suspended arch 32 and the lower face of the brick roof 40 coming in front of the steam and water drum 11, to provide for expansion and contraction between the arch and the roof 40.
Brickwork 42 is preferably laid up from a cornice 43 in the upper outer corner of the section 27" of the wall and extends over the suspended arch, as indicated in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the suspended arch forms a loose joint with the top of the front wall 27.
The upper portion of the section 27" of the wall may be provided with an opening 44, closed by a door 4.5, through which tubes, particularly of the front bank, may be renewed.
l/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A boiler of the general Stirling type, having a front setting wall extending to the upper portion of the front bank of tubes, a roof arch resting on the front setting wall and extending rearwardly from the front wall toward the bank and metallic supports for said arch arranged to allow for relative movement.
2. A boiler of the general Stirling .ype, having a. front setting wall extending to the upper portion of the front bank of tubes, a roof arch resting on the front setting wall and extending rearwardly from the front wall toward the bank, a cross beam and metallic supports suspended therefrom and carrying at least a portion of the roof arch.
3. A boiler of the general Stirling type, having a front setting wall extending to the upper portion of the front bank of tubes, and spaced apart-from the front drum to increase the furnace volume, a roof arch resting upon the front setting wall and extending rearwardly from the front wall to-.
ward the bank, and metallic supports for said arch arranged to allow for relative movement.
4:. In a steam boiler and its setting, a front furnace wall, a drum spaced horizontally from said wall and having its axis substantially parallel to the face of the wall, a upporting member and a flat arch one end of which is pivotally supported by said member and the opposite end of which rests upon said wall, the rear end of said arch being located adjacent to said drum.
5. In a steam boiler and its setting, a front furnace wall, a drum spaced horizontally from said wall and having its axis sub stantially parallel to the face of the wall, a supporting member extending parallel to said drum and a flat arch comprising a plurality of flanged members pivotally support ed at one end by said supporting member and at the opposite end supported on said wall, and refractory members carried by said 'langed members, the rear'end of said arch being located adjacent to said drum.
6. In a steam boiler and its setting, a front furnace wall, a drum spaced horizontally from said wall and having its axis substantially parallel to the face of the wall, a supporting member, an arch one end of whicl'i is supportcdjby said member and the oppo site end of which rests upon said wall and a pad of asbestos or the like for sealing the rear end of said arch against the front drum.
7. In a steam boiler and its setting, a front furnace wall, a drum spaced horizontally from said wall and having its axis substan tially parallel to the face of the wall, a supporting member, a flat arch one end of which is pivota 17 supported by said member and the opposite end of which rests upon said wall, a roof located above said drum with its lower edge coming in front thereof and a pad of asbestos or the like interposed be tween the upper side of said arch and the lower face of said roof.
8. In a steam boiler and its setting, a fron furnace wall. a drum spaced horizontally.
from said wall and having its axis substantially parallel to the face of the wall, a sup porting member extending parallel to said drum, a flat arch one end of which is pivotally supported by said member and the op per side of said arch and the lower edge of said roof.
9. In a steam boiler and its setting, a front furnace wall, a drum spaced horizontally from said wall and having its axis substantially parallel to the face of said wall, an I-beam extending across the front of the boiler and supported at its ends in the side walls of the setting, a flat arch comprising a plurality of flanged members pivotally supported at one end by said supporting member and at the opposite end supported on said wall, and refractory members carried by said flanged members, the rear end of said arch being located adjacent t said drum, a roof located above said drum with its lower edge discomposed in front thereof and a pad of asbestos or the like interposed between the upper side ofsaid arch and the lower face of said roof.
