IMPROVEMENT IN HEATERSI.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,906, dated May 23, 1876; application filed April 12, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LANDON WEs'r, of Sinking Springs, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful instrument for ventilating and warming either public or private apartments, and which is called Wests Airing-Pan and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art toWhich it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings, which form part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im- 'proved heating and ventilating appliance.

This invention has for its object the more complete utilization of the heat from stoves for the purpose of warming apartments, and also the better ventilation of the latter than is obtained by the ordinary methods; and said invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of an apparatus by means of which the pure air from the outside of a building is admitted to the apartment to be heated and ventilated, and inside the latter brought into direct contact with the surface of the stove or heater, and then diffused orreflected into the body or center of and throughout all parts of the room, so as to uniformly heat and ventilate the same.

The essential features of the apparatus embodying my invention are a pipe or conduit for the admission of pure air and a concave reflector to concentrate said air upon the surface of the stove or heater, and afterward diffuse it into the surrounding space.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates an ordinary parlor-stove. B is a pipe or flue rising from the floor, through.

which it continues to the outside of the build ing or apartment, and terminating at its inner end in an upright concavo-convex or shellshaped mouth-piece, G, into which the admitted air passes, and is by it deflected toward and against the surface of the stove, which said mouth-piece faces. As the air by this means becomes heated and returns to- Ward the concave surface of the device 0, it is, by the latter, reflected or diffused into the room, which is in this manner more thoroughly and uniformly heated than by the stove alone.

A modification of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 4, intended to be used either above or below the stove or heater, or even at the side whenever the air, instead of being brought through the floor, is conducted through the adjacent wall. V

In the construction first described the communication with the air-pipe is at the under side of the mouth-piece, while in the modification the communication is central. I do not, however, limit myself to the specific construction shown in either, as various changes within the spirit of the invention may be made.

E represents a damper or valve in the pipe B to control the admission of air.

The mouth-pieces or reflectors are attached to the air-pipes so that they may be taken 011 and put on at pleasure.

The mouth-piece C may be turned around, so that when the room becomes excessively heated the air may be admitted away from the stove,-so as to merely ventilate the room.

It is deemed unnecessary to specify particularly the advantages of the simple contrivance which I have described. It is manifestly an inexpensive apparatus, and may be applied wherever there is a heated surface to receive the deflected air. Its qualities as a ventilator are no less meritorious thanitsother qualities.

The device is applicable to the heating and ventilating of cars.

Having fully described my invention, I claim- The combination, With a stove or heater, of the combined ventilator and heat-reflector, isolated, consisting of a pipe surmounted by or terminating in a flaring mouth, and extending beyond the apartment to be heated, sub stantially as described.
