Patented Oct. 21, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALBERT R. REID, F NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO U S L BATTERY COR- PORATION, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK CARRYING AND PROTECTING DEVICE FOR CONTAINERS Application filed August 27, 1928. Serial No. 302,328.
My invention relates to a carrying and protecting device for containers and more particularly to a combination cover and handle adapted to be detachably associated with a container.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which may be quickly and conveniently attached to a container and which when so attached, will serve as a handle whereby the container may be readily transported manually.
A further object of this invention is to provide a handle adapted to be detachably secured to a container whereby but one hand is required for carrying the container.
A further object of this invention is to provide a combination cover and handle adapted to be detachably secured to a container, said cover and handle being in loose permanent engagement with each other in such a manner that neither one may be used without the other.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description.
While my invention may be used with a variety of different kinds of containers, 1 have illustrated it as being applied to a common form of automobile and radio storage battery container. I wish it understood, howso ever, that I do not intend thereby to limit myself to its use in connection with any particular form or type of container.
A clearer understanding of my invention may be had by reference to the appended drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of one form of my invention attached to a storage battery casing.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof, with certain parts broken away, and
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the same device.
A casing or container is designated by reference numeral 10. The form of container shown is that commonly used for housing the cells of an automobile or radio storage battery and comprises end walls 11, side walls 12 and bottom 13. The container may be made of wood or any other suitable material. The cells (not shown) are placed in the container area greater than that of recess 22 and arthrough the open top and are held therein by friction or other means. The usual means employed for lifting and transporting the container comprises the handles 14, one of which extends upwardly from the central portion of the upper edge of each of the end walls 11. Such an arrangement is open to the objection that the person removing the battery must use both hands for that purpose. Frequently it is accomplished with great difliculty, due to the restricted space through which the battery must pass. Further, it often happens that after its removal, a battery is discharged by reason of a connection being inadvertently established between the positive and negative terminals thereof.
I have overcome these diiiiculties by providing a combined detachable handle 15 and cover 16. The handle may be made of steel or any other suitable material and is formed with a substantially flat central portion 17 and end portions 18 integral therewith and extending at an angle thereto, asbest shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The outer extremity of each of the portions 18 of the handle 15 is bent back upon itself to form a hook 19. -The cover member 16 is provided with depending side members 20 and end members 21, the lower edges thereof being adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the container walls 11 and 12. The members 21 are provided with recesses 22 for receiving handles 14. Secured to each of the end walls 21, as by means of screws 23, is a plate 24 having an ranged to cover said recess, a portion thereof extending beyond the lower edge of the member 21 to which it is attached. The lower edge of each of said plates 24 is notched as at 25. Each of the end walls 11 of the container has secured. thereto adjacent its upper edge, a lug 26. The cover 16 is provided with oblique slots 27 for loosely accommodating the portions 18 of the member 15. It will be seen that after the handle 15 has been inserted in position with respect to the member 16, it is notreadily removable therefrom, but only by distorting or fracturing one or the other of these members, thus insuring proper proloo tection of the container contents Whenever the handle 15 is employed.
To attach my device to the container, the hook portions 19 are placed in engagement with handles 14, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The cover 16 is then slid into position, with the lugs 26 in engagement with notches 25. Lugs 26 prevent lateral movement of the cover with respect to the container, while any longitudinal movement thereei is prevented by engagement of the depending portions of plates 22 with end walls 11. The container may then be lifted and carried by grasping with one hand the central portion 17 of the handle 15. Possibility of injury to the hand which frequently occurs unen handles 14: alone are used, is eliminated, as the flat portion 17 is located centrally of the container. The cover 16 will prevent tie cells from being short-circuited or otherwise injured and will necessarily occupy its position over the container whenever the handle 15 is used.
I wish it understood that the illustrations are not to be construed as limitations. Many changes in the form of my invention will occur to those skilled in the art and I intend this patent to cover any and all modifications thereof falling within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In combination with a container having handles extending therefrom, a cover having a plurality of slots therein, side and end walls depending from said cover, said end Walls having recesses to accommodate said container handles, means attached to each of said end walls and covering said recesses for retaining said cover on said container, and a member extending through said slots adapted to detachably engage said handles for the purpose described.
2. In combination with a container having handles extending therefrom, a cover having a plurality of slots formed therein, side and end walls depending from said cover, said end walls having recesses to accommodate said container handles, a plate attached to each of said end walls and covering said recesses, the lower edges of said plates being recessed and extending below the lower edges of said cover end walls, and locating members extending from said container and adapted to fit into said plate recesses for 10- cating said cover in position on said container.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subsc 'ibed my name.
ALBERT R. REID.
