Description

Sept. 19, 1961- A. ERDMANN TOOL OR TACKLE Box Filed March 26 1959 August E rdmann 1N VEN TOR. BY QM 40/51:.
3,000,535 TOOL R TACKLE BOX August Erdmann, 1623 Oak St., Brainerd, Minn. Filed Mar. 26, 1959, Ser. No. 802,078 2 Claims. (Cl. 22055.7)
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tool, tackle and other boxes of the type including a hinged cover having mounted thereon a swinging handle, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for positively securing the cover in closed position, particularly while the box is being carried by the handle.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a box of the aforementioned character wherein the carrying handle is utilized for retaining the cover securing means in operative or locking position.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a cover securing latch of the character described which may readily be mounted on a conventional tool or tackle box without structurally modifying said box.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a tool, tackle, etc., box latch of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact, of light weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective View of a box provided with a latch embodying the present invention, showing said box closed with the latch in operative or locking position;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view, showing the box open with the latch in inoperative position; and
FIGURE 3 is a vertical sectional view, showing the box closed with the latch in operative or locking position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that reference character 4 designates generally a rectangular box body of metal or other suitable material. Hingedly mounted as at 6 on the back 7 of the body 4 is a cover 8 Mounted on the front 9 of the body 4 are the usual latches 10 for securing the cover 8 in dlosed position. Pivotally mounted for swinging movement on the top of the cover 8 is a conventional carrying handle 11. Of course, the box may be of any suitable dimensions.
The embodiment of the present invention which has been illustrated comprises a bent or angular hasp 12 of suitable metal. One end portion of the hasp 12 is rolled to provide a knuckle or sleeve 13 having mounted therein a pin or shaft 14. The end portions of the pin or shaft 14 project from the knuckle 13 and are journalled in a pair of spaced, opposed hearings or the like 15 which are provided therefor on the front 9 of the body 4. Thus, the hasp 12 is pivotally mounted for engagement on the free end of the cover 8. At the free end thereof, the hasp 12 terminates in a T-head 16 having Stas Paent O ice 2 formed therein a longitudinal slot 17 for the reception of the handle 11.
It is thought that the use of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the cover 8 is swung to closed position on the body 7 and secured in the usual manner through the medium of the latches 10. However, as is well known, the usual latches 10 frequently do not hold, particularly when the box is being carried by the handle 11. To positively prevent such an occurrence, the angular hasp 12 is engaged with the free end of the closed cover and the carrying handle -11 is inserted through the slot 17 of said hasp. The box may now be lifted and transported in the usual manner and the hand which grips the handle 11 prevents disengagement of the hasp 12 therefrom. The box 4 may be locked by simply snapping a suitable padlock on the handle 11.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as now is as follows:
1. A safety securing device for boxes of the type including a front, a back, a cover hingedly mounted on said back and a generally U-shaped carrying handle pivotally mounted transversely on said cover, said device comprising a hasp pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the box front, said hasp including a right angularly bent free end portion adapted to overlie and rest on the cover and terminating in a T-head, said T-head having a longitudinal slot therein receiving the handle when said handle is in its upstanding carrying position for securing said hasp in operative position.
2. A safety securing device for boxes of the type including a front, a back, a cover hingedly mounted on said back and a generally U-shaped carrying handle pivotally mounted transversely on said cover, said device comprising a metallic hasp hingedly mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane on the transverse central portion of the box front, said hasp including a right angularly bent free end portion adapted to overlie and rest on the cover and terminating in a T-head, said T-head having a longitudinal slot therein receiving the handle when said handle is in its upstanding carrying position and adapted to retain said hasp in said carrying position, said hasp and said T-head being of flat metal and of a material width for shielding and protecting the area of the cover adjacent the handle.
