Description
S. NAYLOR.
LAMP-WICK TRIMMER.
Patented May 23, 1876.
WITNESSES .dttorney UNITED STATES SAMUEL NAYLOR, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-WICK TRIMI VIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,875, dated May 23, 1876; application filed Mareh20, 1876.
To all whom it may concm'nr Be it known that I, SAMUEL NAYLOR, of Imlependence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lam p-Wick Trimmers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a -full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to .the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. I
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a lamp-wick trimmer, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 shows detached parts of the same.
A and B represent two arms or levers, formed with eyes U (J, like an ordinary pair of shears, for the insertion of the fingers of the hand to work the implement. The opposite ends of the two arms are curved inward, as shown, the end of one being slotted, and the other formed-with a tenon inserted and pivoted thereon. To the inner side of the arm A is attached an elongated block, D or the arm may be formed with such block or projection, in which is made a curved groove for the insertion of .the curved blade E. This blade may be held in said block or projection by any suitable 'or convenient means, or it may be permanently attached thereto. It is, however, preferable to make it removable, so
that it can be taken out, when required, for
sharpening. Directly opposite this knife the inner side of the arm Bis enlarged, as shown, and a soft-metal plate, Gr, secured. thereto, against which the knife E will cut.
This implement is intended to cut the burnt portion of the lamp-wick, and leave the wick oval or convex, so as to give a good light.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arms A B, each having an eye, 0, at one end, curved inward toward each'other at the other ends, and pivoted together, and provided with the block D, curved knife E, and soft-metal plate G, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I at'fix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL NAYLOR.
