My invention relates broadly to electrical pick-up devices for phonographs and more particularly to a novel construction of electromagnetic pick-up device for electric phono raphs. p f
ne of the objects of my invention is to provide an electromagnetic pick-up device by which records of the hill and dale construction or of the laterally cut construction may be played by use of the same pick-up device.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of electric pick-up for Y phonographs which is readily convertible for either hill and dale records or laterally cut l records by a simple shift of the electromagneticmechanism through an angular distance of approximately 90 degrees.
` Still another object of my invention is to provide a simplified construction of an electromagnetic pick-up for phonographs embodying a minimum number of parts associated Within a compact space with a central armature member movable within a permanent magnetic field and concentrically disposed within a winding in which variablecurrents may be induced in accordance with the movement of the armature under control of a stylus Jfor the development of currents in the winding in accordance with a phonograph sound record. v
A further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement for mounting a roch:-l
able armature member concentrically within a system of permanent magnets and within an electromagnetic winding wherein variable currents may be induced in accordance with the motion of thel stylus under control of a phonograph sound record where the armature member may be shifted in position through an angular distance for adapting the stylus to both the hill and dale record and the laterally cut type of record'without further change in the equipment.
My invention will be more clearly' understood from the specification hereinafter following by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

The magnetic pick-up illustrated herein is intended for operation with an, amplifier system and loud speaker for the reproduction of phonographv records electrically.v
The device of my invention is essentially a generator, the magnetic field being supphed by a permanent magnet which corresponds to the field coils of a generator. I provide a 1g. 3; Fig. 5 v
pair of pole angles for concentrating the flux supplied by the permanent magnet. An armature is arranged between the pole pieces with a coil disposed around the armature. The armature provides a 'socket in which a stylus is carried and the movement of the armature effects a cutting-of the magnetic lines of force thereby inducing a 4voltage in the winding. The current is amplified through an electron tube system andntilized to operate a loud speaker for the reproduction of sound in accorda-ncewith the movement of a stylus under control of the phonograph record.
' My invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which the phonograph cabinet has been designated by reference character 1 with a record table positioned thereon and a sound record 3 carried by the record table 2. The phonograph tone arm is illustrated at 4 with a telescopic extension 5 thereon into which a Atubular member 6 may be inserted for establishing connections with contacts within the tone arm which lead to the input of the amplifier circuit. The phonograph pick-up is positioned within a casing 7 norn mally disposed at an angle with respect to the tubular member 6 as represented in the drawings. The tubular portion .8 of the. phonograph pickup is integrally connected with the tubular portion 6 and carries a circular plate member 9 to which the body portion of the pick-up is movably connected. The body portion of the pick-up device is carried by a circular plate member 10 which is journaled in an aperture in the circular plate member 9 of the pick-up and confined therein by means of a nut or other suitable securing means 11. An arcuate slot 25 is provided in the plate member 10 into which a pin 26 secured to the plate member 9 projects for permitting the angular movement of the body portion of the electromagnetic phonograph pick-'up device. A permanent magnet 12 is supported from the plate member l() by means of screws 20 and 21. Pole angles 14 and 15 are secured to the permanent magnet structure by means of screws 16 and 17. The pole angles 14 and 15 face toward each other and grip between their faces an armature member 30 with a resilient tubular mounting represented at 34. Surrounding the armature member 30 I provide an insulated coil support 29 on which a winding 28 is disposed concentric with the central portion ofthe armature 30. Conductors extend from the winding 28 through the plate 10 and the aperture 29 in the plate member 9 and connect to Contact members 43 carried in plug 42 adjustable by means of screw member 44 in the tone arm 5. The head of the tubular portion 8 is normally closed by means of a cap screw 24.
The armature member 30 has been more clearly illustrated in Figs. 9 and 1() as consisting of a central cylindrical portion flattened at 38 and provided with a laterally extending shoulder 39 with a flattened web portion 37 extending therefrom. The shoulder 39 provides the pivot upon which the armature 30 moves and is also thecenter of gravity of the armature when the stylus 36 and actuating member 40 are in place. By virtue of the balancing of the armature on the shoulder 39 as a pivot, I have found that. greater volume of sound may be reproduced and higher frequencies more .efficiently reproduced. A resilient lining 34 is provided in the oppositely disposed faces of the pole pieces 14 and 15 between which the shoulder 39 of thearmature 30 may freely rock. The end 38 of the armature 30 is confined between tensioning or damping ads 33, the pressure on which is regulate by means of angle members 31 and 32 which are radially adjustable by means of screw and into the portion 37 of the armature member.
For playing laterally cut records as represented in Fig. 7a the armature member is shifted to position represented in Fig. 7. For playing hill and dale records as represented in Fig. 8n the armature member is shifted to a position represented in Fig. 8.
In Figs. 11, 12 and 13 I have represented a modified construction of the phonograph pick-up where the permanent magnet is in the form of a borse-shoe and is not entirely closed upon itself.
The pole angles 14 and 15 are so shaped in their adjacent faces .with grooves therein that the armature member 3() may have its shoulder 37 gripped therein for allowing a rocking movement without the necessity of employing mechanical pivots thereby eliminating the question of maintenance to a large degree which might otherwise be necessary from time to time.
lVhile I have described my invention in certain preferred embodiments, I desire that it be understood that modifications may be made and that no limitations upon my invention are intended other than are imposed by the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. An electric pick-up for phonographs comprising a supporting member, an electro-y magnetic actuating system, an axially shiftable carrier for said electromagnetic system concentrically disposed on said supporting member, an armature member mounted with respect to said electromagnetic actuating system, a stylus carried by said annature member, saidvearrier being shiftable to one or another limiting positions over a displacement of substantially ninety degrees while maintaining the concentric relation between said carrier and said supporting member.
2. An electrical pick-up for phonographs comprising a supporting member, a rotatable carrier concentrically mounted upon said supporting member, an electromagnetic driver impart a rocking movement'to said armature.
3. An electrical pick-up for phonographs comprising a supporting arm, a carrier disposed in said arm, an angularly movable frame concentrically positioned on said carrier, a permanent magnet system supported' on said frame, apair of pole pieces secured to said permanent.magnet system,fan electromagnetic winding positioned adjacent said ermanent magnet system, an armature mem.- er positioned between said pole pieces, a stylus carried by said armature member for imparting rockingvmovement to said armature member in accordance with a sound record, said magnet system and armature member being movable laterally through an an' gular distance of approximately ninety de grees by a change in position of said frame with respect to said carrier'.
4. An electrical phonograph pick-up device comprising a supporting member arranged to be inserted in the tone arm of a phonographfa rotatable carrier journaled y upon said supporting member and arranged to move concentrically with respect to.v said supporting member, 'an electromagnetic operating mechanismv supported on said rotatable carrier electromagnetic operating mechanism carrying a stylus by which meehhnical vibrations may be imparted thereto, 'said electromagnetic voperating mechanism and said stylus being shiftable in posi- Vtion concentric With said supporting mem' ber through an are of approximately ninety degrees for imparting movement to said stylus from a sound record.

An electrical phonograph pick-up de vice comprising a tubular supporting member arranged to be inserted in the tone arm of a phonograph, a bearing plate member connected Withsaid supportingmember, a rotatable carrier journaled in n central position on said bearing plate member` electromagnetic l means supported by said rotatable carrier, a rockable armature member mounted concentrically within said carrier and having a stylus connected thereto whereby mechanical vibrations may be imparted to said armature member for correspondingly moving said armature member within said electro magnetic means when said carrier is shifted in a position concentric with said carrier in either of tivo eXtreme positions for actuation by either a hill and dale or a laterally' cut phonograph record.

An electrical phonograph pick-up de-A vice, comprising a member arranged to be connected with the .tone armof a phonograph, a bearing plate connected with .said member, a rotatable plate journaled-in said bearing plate and shiftable to `either of twoy y means of a stylus secured thereto said armatnre being resiliently mounted between sald pole pieces and having means adjacent one end thereof ordamping the vibration of said arma-ture when saidrotatable plate .is shifted to either, eXtreme position for actuation of said stylus by either` a hill anddale or a laterally cut phonograph record.

An electrical phonograph pickr up de-` vice comprising a. member arranged `to be connected with the tone arm of a phonograph, a` bearing plate connected with said member, a rotatable plate journalc'd in said bearing plate and shiftable to either of two extreme positions, a permanent magnet #system carried `by said rotatable plate,- a pair of pole pieces secured to said permanent magnet system and directed toward each other, an electromagnetic winding located between said pole pieces, airarmature member resiliently mounted in the oppositely directed faces of said pole pieces and extending through said electromagnetic Winding and limited in its movement by damping means at one end thereof and actuated at the other end thereof by means of a rstylus when said rotatable plate is shifted to either extreme position for actuation of said stylus by either a hill and dale or a laterally cnt phonograph record.

In an electrical phonograph pick-up device, a supporting member, a. carrier shiftable to either of two extreme positions on said member, a permanent magnet system supported by said carrier, a pair of pole pieces connected with said permanent magnet system and directed toward each other, an electromagnetic winding disposed between said pole pieces, an armature member, said armature member comprising a T shaped magnetic device flattened at opposite ends, said armature device having its T shaped end resiliently mounted between said pole pieces and having a stylus carried therein, the opposite end of said armature device being confined between a pair of damping members for limiting the movement of said armature device under control of said stylus when said carrier is shifted to either eXtreme position for actuation of said stylus by either a hill and dale or a laterally cut phonograph record.

In an electrical phonograph pick-up device` a supporting member, a carrier positioned on said member, a frame angularly movable with respect to said carrier, a permanent magnet system positioned on said frame, a pair of pole pieces carried thereby and directed toward each other, an electromagnetic winding, an armature device centrally located between said pole pieces and projecting through said electromagnetic winding` said armature device havinga longitudinally extending shoulder thereon arranged to project into the adjacent faces of said pole pieces and to be resiliently suspend- 'ed therein, apair of limiting stops secured to the opposite ends of said pole pieces and directed toward each other for confining the movement of said armature device, said armature device being arranged to receive a stvluf.: at the endthereof for actuation by In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
