Magnetic instruments.-An electromagnetic reproducer is constructed to play both zig-zag and hill-and-dale types of records with the same stylus by mounting the reproducer head so that it can be rotated on its carrier through an angle of 90 degrees about an axis substantially parallel to the armature and stylus to its respective operative positions. The head is constructed with a circular plate 10 mounted bv a central stem to a disc 9 carried by a supporting arm 5 capable of moving across the record. A permanent magnet 12 is secured to the plate 10, and polepieces 14, 15 fixed to the magnet embrace a coil 28 and grip, through rubber or other resilient damping-pads 34, laterally extending rectangular ridges 39 formed on the armature 30 at its centre of gravity. The armature is further damped and positioned by pads 33 adjustably fixed by slotted angle members 31 and screws 45. The stylus 36 is secured in the armature, and the head is enclosed in a casing 41. Fig. 2 shows a head in position for playing zig-zag cut records. To play the hill-and-dale type, the head is rotated on the disc 9 through 90 degrees, permitted by a pin 26 on the disc engaging a quadrantal slot 25 in the plate 10. The coil leads are taken to contact members 43 mounted in a plug 42 adjustably secured by a screw 44 in the supporting arm 5.
