My invention relates broadly to electrical phonograph pickup devices and more'` particularly` to an electromagnetic phonograph pick-up device.. Y v y A @ne ofthe objects of my invention is to provide a construction of electrical phonograph pick-up device comprising a'relatively small number of parts assembled in acompact manner for actuation by the stylus of the phonograph for securing relatively large changes in the magnetic condition of an electromagnetic winding for controlling an electron tube amplification system at relatively large amplitude.
Another object of my invention is'to provide a construction of electromagnetic actuator for velectrical phonographs in which an armature member is mounted within an electromagnetic winding for actuation by the stylus of a phonograph for effecting changes Y in the magnetic condition of the electromagneticv winding in accordance with a sound record. I 4
Another object of my invention is to provide'a construction of electrical phonograph pick-up device in whichan armature member in the form of a pedestal is rockablyl mountedrwithin an electromagnetic winding,"the armature member being flanged intermediate the ends thereof to allow the resilient-setting of the, armature within the vcasing fof the pick-up Vdevice in a position in which vibrations from a stylus may be readily transferred to the. armature.
Another object of my invention is'to provide a construction of electrical phonograph pick-up device in which an armature member is caused to be rockably mounted within' an electromagnetic winding and in cor-operation with a stylus in such manner that the armature member may be vibrated in either of' two directions. according as the stylus is required to follow vertically` orlaterally formed sound records.
Other and still further objects of my in-l vention reside .in the construction and arrangement of parts for the electrical phonograph pick-up as described in the following specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
f Figure 1 is side elevation of a phonograph showing the electrical pick-up of my n invention in' positionon the phonograph; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view taken' through the electrical phonograph pick-up; Fig.`3 is a cross-sectional view taken 'von line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig.: t is alateral crosssectional view taken through the phonograph pick-up on line 4-41 of Fig. 3*; F ig'. 5 is a lateral cross-sectional view taken through the :electrical phonograph pick-up on ]ine 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken through the electrical phonograph pick-up on 'line 66 of Fig. 2 ;,Fig. 7 shows the arrangement of pole members by which the upper end of the armature is controlled; and Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the armature member em- 'Vployed in the electricalv phonograph pick-up of my invention. Y,
Referring to the drawings in more detail,
reference character 1 illustrates the phonograph which is equipped Vwith the electrical pick-up of my invention. Reference character 2 indicates the revolvable record table for the phonograph arranged to carry record 3 over which the arm 4: is arranged to swing. Theelectrical phonograph pick-up device is illustrated' at 5 as 4comprising a supporting member 7 and socket member 6 which may fit into the end of the arma. A permanent magnet 8 is positioned with respect to the sup-l porting member 7 by means of a clamping 'strip`9 and"'scrfew member 10. I provide a pair of pole pieces 11 and 12 between the poles of the permanent magnet 8, the pole pieces terminating in arcuate shaped pole faces 84 and 85 on opposite sides of thearmature'member 19 andare secured in position by'means of screw members 111 and V15 which extend through the supporting member 7 A resilient pad 16 is positioned withv respect to a spacerplate V17 and'upper resilient pad 18as represented: in Figd and between the vresilient pads 16 and 18 the armature member 19 is centered and-resilientlysupported, the flange 20 thereof being gripped on its opposite faces by the resilient pads 18 and 16. The armature member 19 has one end thereof reduced and formed in polygonal cross secvtion .as represented at 21. V'A resilient sleeve 22 fits over the polygonal portion 21 of the armature 19 and forms an abutment for the pole pieces 23 and 24 which are adjustable upon the pole members 11 and 12 by means of screws 23a and 24a operating in slots 235 and 24?). The coil support 26 is mounted between the pole members 11 and 12 and the pole pieces 23 and 24. This coil support has a hollow core through which the armature 19 passes. An electromagnetic winding 25 is carried by the coil support 26 and is subjected to changes in its magnetic condition in ac-. cordance with vibrations of the armature member developed by movement imparted thereto from the stylus 30 which is mounted and secured in the socket member 29 by means ofadjustable set screw 31.
It will thus be seen that the armature member 19 is adapted to be vibrated in either of two planes according as the stylus .30 is required to follow a vertically formed sound track or a laterally formed sound track of the sound record. The pole pieces 23 and 24 are so arranged with respect to the `armature member 19 that the lines of magnetic flux will be varied in accordance with the vibration of the varmature member irrespective of the plane in which the vibration is set up.
The entire assembly is housed within the cover portion 27 secured through the strip 9 by means of screw members 2.8 forming a dust proof casing for the phonograph pickup. Conductors 36 lead from the electromagnetic winding 25 through the socket 6 to suitable contact members by which they may be plugged into cooperating sockets in the phonograph arm 4 for establishing con-nection with the electron tube amplification apparatus which may be positioned within the phonograph cabinet.
VThe electrical phonograph piclcup of my invention comprises a relatively small number of parts thereby facilitating manufacture and production and decreasing the manufacturing cost.
