IMPROVEMENT IN N'ECK-YOKES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,836, dated May 1876; application filed April 15, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NICHOLAS HIATT, of Plum Hollow, in the county of Fremont and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes for Buggies and Carriages and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

-T. e nature of my invention consists in the mode of securing together the two ends of the leather usually used in making neck yoke clasps, as also the mode of protecting the opening 'in the'same, whichreceives the pole, as will be hereinafter set forth. i

In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 a section.

In thefigures, Arepresents the usual leather clasp for neck-yokes, constructed of one, two, or more, layers or thicknesses of leather. Just after the two portions of the clasp leave the neck-yoke, which it has surrounded, they are seciirely fastened together by means of two or more screws, D D, which, after passing through the clasp, enter suitable washers or plates (provided with threads) upon the other side. B represents a metallic eye, which is provided with a flange. This eye passes what I claim as new,

through the pole-opening of the clasp, and its flange rests against the leather around said opening. On the opposite side of the poleopening is a metallic plate, 0, the inner face of said plate resting against the edges of the eye B. E E represent screws, which pass through plate 0, and into the metal of eye B, and which serve to clamp the leather firmly between them. The opening through eye B is inclined at a suitable angle to accommodate the clasp to the pole when in use.

- It will'be seen that by this construction I fasten the ends of the clasp firmly together; but I also form an eye for the end of the pole, which is durable and free from ordinary wear. The screws being removed, the several parts are readily taken apart.

Having thus fully described my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

plate 0, and the screws E E and D, the several parts constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth. v
