PATENT. QFFIGE.
UNITED STATES EMMOR M. MALLETT, OF WESTVILLE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,730, dated May 23, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, EMMOR M. MALLETT, of Westville, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam Washer, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section-of my improved steam-washer. Fig. 2 is a top View of the per,- forated bottom. 3
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved steam-washer, which shall have no tubes within it to take up space, and be in the way in putting in and taking out the clothes, and'which shall be effective in operation, washing the clothes quickly and thoroughly.
The invention consists in the combination of the perforated false bottom, the slotted plate, and the threelower plates, forming return-channels, with the boiler, provided with the exterior tapering tubes at its ends, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents anordinary wash-boiler, which is provided with a closely-fitting cover, B. At the ends of the boiler A are two tapering tubes, 0, the larger ends of which are connected with holes in the ends of the said boiler A, close to its bottom, and their smaller ends are connected with holes close to the upper edges of said ends. D is a false bottom, which is perforated with numerous small holes,-and which has a downwardly-projecting flange formed around its edge, to rest upon the bottom of said boiler. 1n the end parts of the flange of the bottom D are formed holes, directly opposite the holes leading into the lower ends of the tubes 0. To the flange of the perforated bottom D, andlj ust above the holes in the ends of said flange, is secured the edge of a plate, E, which has a slot in its middle part. Be-
low the middle part of the plate E is placed a narrower and shorter plate, F, the side edges of which are bent upward, and are secured to the lower side of the plate E, thus forming a channel with open ends. Below the end parts of the plate, and projecting a litle beyond the ends of said plate F, are placed two plates, G, which are a little wider than the said plate F, and the side and outer end edges of which are bent upward, and are secured to the lower side of the plate E, thus inclosingthe ends of the plate F, and fo ming two return-channels with open inner ends. The perforated false bottom D is provided with rings d, to enable it and its attached plates to be conveniently removed when required.
In using the Washer, when the steam begins to form it forces I the water up through the tubes 0, to be discharged upon the clothes. The water passes down through the clothes, through the holes in thefalse bottom D, through the slot in the plate E, and through the channels formed by-the platesF G to the bottom of the boiler A, to be again forced up through the pipes G, and be discharged upon the clothes, thus keeping up a continuous circulation until the clothes are washed clean.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure. by Letters Patent- The wash-boiler A, with cover B, and having a circuit formed by the upwardly-tapering end tubes G G outside of said boiler, provided with perforated flanged false bottom D, the middle slotted plate E, edge-bent plate F, and angle-plate G, as and for the purpose specified.
