The present invention is directed to improvements in hat and coat holders.

The primary object of the invent1on is to rovide a device of this character which can easily and uickly attached to an automobile in order t at a hat can be conveniently Another object of .the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, eific1ent in o eratlon, durable, and one whlch can be manu actured at a very small cost.

With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more 5 fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the roof of a motor vehicle and 2 the front bar frame and to which the device is preferably secured. The holder comprises a plate 3 which is secured to the bar 2 by securing devices 4, said plate having its upper end provided with v a transversely curved flange 5 which terminates in spaced stops 6, the purpose of which will be later explained. The plate 3 has secured'thereto in any approved manner a hook 7 which serves to suspend a garment when desired.

The plate is provided near its upper end with a pair of rearwardly extending ears 8 in whic are supported shafts 9, said shafts having engaged thereon a coil spring 10,

the terminals 11 of which bear against the plate 3 and plate 12, the plate 12 having ears 13 carried thereby which are pivotally connected with the shafts 9 and are embraced by the ears 8. The plate 12 is reduced, as ind1- cated at 13, the reduced portion thereof having sleeves 14 turned thereon and in which are engaged the arms 15 of the hat supporting loop 15'. The arms 15 are firmly connected to the plate 12 so that the loop 15 will be held firmly in position.

It will be obvious that when it is desired to apply or support a hat it is only necessary to grasp the loop and pull the same downwardly whereupon the crown of the hat may be passed through the loop and the loop released so that the hat will be elevated and firmly held against accidental displacement. Obviously,

the spring 10 will maintain the loop in a horizontal position but will permit ready lowering of the loop in order that the hat can be removed or replaced. The upward swinging movement of the plate 12 will he obviously limited when the same contacts with the sto s 6.

rom the foregoing it is thought that the operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing an of the advantages of the invention.

at is claimed is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a plate having a curved flange carried by its upper end terminating in downwardly disposed stops, said plate having ears carried thereby, a second plate having ears carried thereby, a shaft passable through the ears of said plates, a coil spring encircling the shafts and having one terminal engaged with the first named plate and thesother terminal engaged with the second named plate, sleeves carried by the second named plate, a hat sustaining loop having arms engaged in said sleeve, said spring serving to normally urge the second named plate upwardly, the upward movement thereof being limited by said stops.

2. A device of the class described comprising a plate, stops connected with the plate, a hook carried by the plate, a second plate ivotall connected with the first named p ate and aving sleeves carried thereby, a hat sustaining loop having arms carried thereby and engaged-in said sleeve, and means for urging the second named late upwardly, the upward movement thereo being limited by said stops.
