IMBROVEMENT IN NASAL DOUCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Nol 177,632, dated May 23, 1876; application tiled l November 9, 1875.-
To all whom it Amay concern:
vBe it known that we, .CHARLES E. GASSIN, ROBERT U. GRAY, and JOSEPH 1t. GASsrN, of the city of N ew York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nasal Douches or Irrigators; and we do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact de-V scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference .being had to which form part of this specification. p
The invention relates to medical appliances; vand consists of a medicating atomizing nasal douche or irrigator, for injecting a line spray or vapor of a medicated compound into the nasal cavities and throat.
The instrument consists of elastic diaphragm, with eduction and induction ports, a chambered nozzle containing the medic-ating compound, and an elastic tube or pipe connectin g the nozzle and pump, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purposes hereinafter more `fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings', Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional View of, the device complete. Eig. 2 is a top view of the rubber bulb or air-pump, showing the induction and eduction ports.
A is a Aglass or other nozzle, constructed with an enlarged portion or chamber, A1, a conoidal end,-A2, with a small opening attheend, and a screw end, A3. D is a metallic screwcap, with a projecting hollow part, d, on which lits a rubber tube, B. This rubber tube is at- `tached at the other end to a similar projecting hollow portion, b3, of a metallic cap, C. This metallic cap is constructed with holes or induction-ports b, covered on the-inside by an elastic valve, bk b2 is a washer secured to the inner end of'tube b3, for holding the valve in place. O1 is an elastic bulb or diaphragm secured to the cap() by flange C2. Within the chamber A1 of the nozzle A is placed a sponge or other absorbent, saturated with any suitable or appropriate medical compound.
an air-pump or Having thus set forth and described the differentparts of the instrument, we will 110W proceed todescribe the manner of using'it, which is as follows: Take the glass case in one hand, and place the conoidal end in the nostril; hold the pump in the other hand, with the tirst and second fingers resting on the rim of the metal cap C, with the'thumb resting on bottom of bulb C. Now, press in the rubber bulb, by the thumb, toward the metal ange C the valves blwill close, causing the air contained in the bulb to pass through eductionport b3, tube B, into chamber A1, through the -sponge or absorbent, where it is atomized, and
impregnated with the medicated compound, which is vaporized, and conveyed by the air through the discharge-opening, into the nasal cavities andthroat, where the medicated vapor or sp1-ay is deposited.
Thus it will be seen, a simple, convenient, andeffective instrument is obtained for injecting medicinal compounds to all parts of the nasal cavities and throat, for the relief and cure of catarrh, 811e. j
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The air-pump, composed of elastic bulb or diaphragm G1, metallic cap C C2, with ini duction-ports b, valve b1, washer bz, and eduction-tube b3, as and for the purposes described.
2. The medicated atomizing nasal douche or irrigator, consisting of cham-bered nozzle A A1, containing the medicating compound, tube B, and vair-pump O C1, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes described. In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 28th day of October, 1875.
