Description

i 1 5; 3 1.. BROWN I 1,778,214.
PRIIING ATTACHMENT FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION MOTORS Filed Nov. 21. 1928 INVENTOR Mm, ATTORNEYS.
Laihrop Browm Patented Sept. 15, 1930 UNITED STATES LATHROP BROWN, or MONTAUK, new YORK PRIMING ATTACHMENT FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION MOTQRS Application filed November 21, 1928. Serial No. 321,000.
This invention relates to priming attachments for internal combustion motors.
My invention has particularly to do with motors and more especially with outboard 5 motors for boats where the combustible fuel, such as gasoline or other liquid fuel, is mixed with a lubricating oil which makes it diflicult at times to start the motor.
My improved attachment is such that it 19 can be used in connection with any type of motor and may be installed without changing the construction of the motor or the parts thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment which enables the feed line and the carburetor to be drained and supplied with gasoline or other liquid fuel which will prime the engine and insure a quick starting of the motor.
Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating one type of outboard motor showing my improved priming attachment operatively connected thereto;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary View, mainly in elevation but partly in section, showing my improved attachment in connection with the carburetor and feed line of the motor, the view being on an appreciably larger scale than Figure 1.
A represents a motor of the internal combustion type, such as commonly employed in connection with boats and known as an outboard motor. although it is to be distinctly understood that my invention is not limited to any particular motor.
1 represents the liquid fuel tank which is connected by a feed line or pipe 2 with the fuel chamber 3 at the bottom of the carburetor float chamber 4. A cock 5 is provided at the point of connection between the pipe 2 and the tank 1.
Ordinarily a motor of this character is provided with a screwthreaded opening 6 in the oppositeside of the fuel chamber 3 at the bottom of the carburetor float chamber 4 for the reception of a plug which can be removed to drain and clean the carburetor.
In employing my attachment I remove and discard the plug and screw into the threaded opening 6 a horizontal pipe 7, preferably although not necessarily in line with the feed pipe or feed line 2.
The horizontal pipe 7 at itsouter end communicates with a vertical pipe 8 which extends above and below the pipe 7 that has a drain pet cock 9 at its lower end. A cup 10 is located at the upper end of pipe 8 and a cook 11 is located in the pipe 8 between the cup 10 and the point of communication between the pipes 7 and 8.
The operation of priming the carburetor before starting is as follows:
First, the cock 5 is closed and the drain pet cock 9 opened, which allows the liquid or fuel mixture in the carburetor and in the feed line or pipe 2 to completely drain. The pet cock 9 is then closed and the cook 11 opened. Gasoline or other desired fluid is poured into the cup 10, passing through the pipes/7 and 8 and supplying the carburetor as well as filling the feed pipe 2.
The cock 11 is then closed and the cock 5 opened. When the motor is turned over the gasoline will quickly burn and the motor can easily start, and after it is started the fuel in the tank 1 feeds in the ordinary way.
Various changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
In an internal combustion engine, a carburetor provided with a fuel chamber normally in open commuication with the usual float chamber of the carburetor, a pipe connected with a source of a heavy fuel and in communication with the chamber, a valve in the pipe for controlling the flow of heavy fuel to the chamber, a priming attachment for the carburetor including a vertical pipe, a horizontal pipe in communication with the chamber and the vertical pipe intermediate the ends of said vertical pipe, a valve in the vertical pipe below the point of connection between the vertical and horizontal pipes for draining the chamber, a cup at the upper end of the vertical pipe to receive a priming liquid, a valve in the vertical pipe above said connection for normally closing the pipe to the atmosphere and for controlling the flow of the priming liquid to the chamber.
LATHROP BROWN.
