Description

Patented Sept. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THEOPHILE GERVAISE, SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH T. GERVAISE AND WILLIAM A. FISSETTE, BOTH OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS COMPOSITION FOR LAUNDRY BLUING N Drawing.
will give a clean, pure white appearance to the laundered article with the use of a minimum amount of the mixture.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an improved mixture for laundry bluing that Will be economical to manufacture and eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved mixture for laundry bluing that will not stain or streak the laundered article, but will give the desired white ap pearance with a minimum amount of the mixture. 7
' Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and it will be apparent that slight changes in the proportions may be made Without detracting from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the following claims. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact proportions shown, said proportions having been given by way of illustration only.
It has been found from experience in the use of laundry blues that they are liable to stain or dye the laundered articles, detracting from their appearance and in some instances spoiling the article. Experiments and use have shown that with my improved mixture of laundry bluing the laundered articles when treated with the same will have a clean, pure white appearance and that a minimum and economical quantity only of the mixture is necessary for use. The mixture is simple and economical of manufacture and in every way desirable for the use for which it is intended.
In preparing my laundry bluing I proceed as following: First take one ounce of oxalic acid and mix this with three ounces of powdered Prussian blue and one dram of powdered ammonium chloride (apothecaries weight) with one gallon of water (rain or spring water preferred), thoroughly mix the compound and let it set for one hour, then filter, using a sand filter preferably to make Application filed. November 5, 1927.
Serial No. 231,396.
the mixture clear and to remove the sediment. The mixture is then ready for bottling or putting in. selected containers.
In use the oxalic acid acts as a cleaner. The Prussian blue gives the desired color and the ammonium chloride acts as a bleach. The mixture cleans and bleaches as well as gives the desired color effect usual in the use of bluing. In use the mixture is poured into the washing water or solution and mixed in the usual way as bluings until the required depth of color is obtained; then the washed clothes or laundry is put through the bluing Water in the usual prior art way, being thereafter wrung out and rinsed.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture a bluing mixture containing Prussian blue, oxalic acid, ammonium chloride and water.
2. As a new article of manufacture a bluing mixture comprising matter mixed in the following proportions: three ounces of Prussian blue; one ounce of oxalic acid, and one dram of ammonium chloride (apothecaries Weight) in one gallon of water.
3. A composition of matter for a bluing mixture consisting of Prussian blue, oxalic acid and ammonium chloride.
4. A composition of matter for a bluing mixture consisting of one ounce of oxalic acid, three ounces of Prussian blue and a relatively small quantity of ammonium chloride mixed with water.
THEOPI-IILE GERVAISE.
