FERDINAND BRAUN, OF, NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m BED-LOUNGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,462, dated May 16, 1676; application filed October 2, 1875. I
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND BRAUN, of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Bed.
. bed-lounges, by which a more convenient opening and closing of the same is obtained, and a strong and steady support'furnished when the lounge is thrown into position for use as a bed.
The invention consists of a lounge with folding seat-section, provided with a swinging side-board, that is extended at the ends to form the supporting-legs.
The sideboard is'hooked by a pivoted rod to the hinged head-section, that looks, when folded back, securely to the back of the lounge.
In the drawing, A represents the main section.; B, the hinged seat-section, that swings to the outside in the usual manner to form a bed. 0 is the back and .D the lower half of the head-section, and D the upper half, which is hinged to the lower to swing to the outside and-form the head-piece for the hinged seatsection.
At the outer side of the seat-section B are strong hinges a, that are raised above the edge of the section, for carrying the swinging side-board E out with legs E, extending at the ends, in one piece therewith.
The hinges allow the clear swinging around of the side-board E until it assumes a vertical position in contact with the outer frame of the seat-section, when the same is thrown into open position.
The vertical position of the side-board and legs may be further secured by a suitable latch, fastening-screw, or other device, so that there may be no possibility of any detaching or sliding of the legs.
A connecting rod, F, is hung'to an eye or staff, b, of the side-board, and hooked into a staple, d, at the outer end of the head-section l), establishing thus the rigid attachment of the upper head-section in its open position with the seat-section and supporting-boards.
The back 0 is provided with a groove, hook, or spring-catch, or other device for securing the upper head-section on the lower stationary section, and to the back when folded over, the lower part to form the head of the lounge.
The solid legs of the side-board and the legs of the lounge may .be provided with casters,so that the whole may be moved freely,
either as a lounge or bed, to any place in the room.
The lounge is readily changedto a bed, and vice versa, in an easy and convenient manner by swinging out or folding the parts in the manner shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a bed lounge, the hinged seat-section, having outer side-board, with extension-legs applied to raised hinges, to swing in to vertical supporting position, substantially as specified.
