Description

Sept. 2, 1930. J. HlLToN lSPRING UPHOLSTERED SEAT BACK Filed arch 30. 1928 Patented Sept. 2, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SPRING UPHOLSTERED SEAT BACK Application led March 30, 1928, Serial No.
This invention refers to improvements relating to spring upholstered seat-backs, the object being to provide greater efficiency, economy and comfort than hitherto.
In connection with spring mattresses, it has hitherto been proposed to anchor stretched webbings of fabric to a framework and to attach springs to each opposite side of this fabric.
In connection with double sided spring cushions it has previously been proposed to attach to two separate gridsof flat iron or wires stretched across the framework springs arranged in rows to face each side alternately, their inner ends being secured to the grid remote from the surface formed by the outer coils.
In connection with reversible backs of seats, it has previously been proposed to employ a set of coiled springs inside the framework of the back of the seat and to cover these springs with padding attached to said framework at each side of the back of the seat.
rIhe disadvantages associated with webbing are Vthat 'the same will stretch and is liable to break and requires to be previously stretched between two points, and as it sagsV its former efficiency is destroyed.
According to my present invention, spring upholstered seat backsV consist of single fier:- ible strips of spring steel or other suitable metal havin springs attached to each side thereof thereby imparting a more eflicient or buoyant effect to the reversible back of the seat as it is not necessary to stretch these metal strips and they are equally efficient whether attached to the framework of the seat or not.v f
In accordance with my present invention, the accompanying explanatory diagrammatic drawing shows an outside elevation in Fig. l and a Vfragmentary front elevation in Fig. 2 of the reversible back of a seat as aforesaid, the same construction and arrangement being applicable to fixed backs of seats where the seats are on opposite sides for those seated back to back.
In combination with the back 1 of the seat 5 flexible metal strips 2 have springs 3 an- 265,910, and in Great Britain April 9, 1927.
chored to each opposite side thereof so forming the cushioning means shown and as set forth in my British patent specification No. 10d-,787, a slot or opening 4; of a known kind being formed through the back l of the seat 5, and into which the said cushioning means is fitted and anchored in a convenient manner by recessing the opening 4 at 6 and suitably securing the free ends of the flexible metal strips 2 therein such as by means of n is 7, the springs 3 being attached to the flexible metal strips 2 so that they project beyond each side of the back of the seat l and are suitably upholstered such as by means of a suitabie covering 8, so that one cushioning means forms a double cushion, that is, a cushion at each side of the back of the I'Iaving now described my invention, I claim Spring upholstered seat-backs, comprising, in combination, single flexible strips 2 of spring metal, spiral springs 3 attached to each opposite side of said single flexible strips of spring metal thereby forming cushioning means, an opening 4 formed in the back of the seat and into which opening said cushioning means is tted, a recess 1n said opening and securing the free ends of said single strips of spring metal at 7 in said recess, and over said spiral springs the provision of upholstery 8 at each side of said spiral springs. Signed'by me this 16th day of March, i928.
e JOHN HILTON.
