A spring structure comprises a support frame 10 having front and rear longitudinal members 11, 12, two longitudinally extending, spring wire reinforced composite layers 25, 26 superimposed on the frame 10 and having longitudinal bonder wires 30, 31 and 34, 35, and means for anchoring the bonder wires to the frame members 11, 12. The upper layer 25 may comprise a fabric, e.g. burlap, sheet 27 with spaced transverse wires 29 threaded therethrough, the front bonder wire 30 being connected by clips 30 to the upper ends 44 of spaced V-springs 40 which are secured at their lower ends 43 to the frame 11 and the rear bonder wire 31 to the rear frame 12 either by engagement directly behind V-arms 50 or through the intermediary of a longitudinally extending sinuous spring wire 82. The lower layer 26 may be of similar construction to the upper layer 25 or alternatively (Fig. 8, not shown) may comprise longitudinal fabric strips, in place of the fabric sheet 33. The arched portions 64, 63 of the layers 25, 26 may be spaced or alternatively secured together, e.g. by adhesive or clips, along a longitudinal line, as at 65. Bonder wires 34, 35 of the lower layer 26 are secured to the frame members 11, 12 by clips 60. Alternatively, the front bonder wire 34 is clipped to the apex of the V-springs 40. Spiral springs 61 are anchored to the frame side members 13 and support the arch 63 of the lower layer 26 at its ends. The spring wires 29 may be helical, sinuous or straight. Seat upholstery may comprise cotton and sponge rubber layers.
