In order to strengthen the pedestal2, and particularly the vjunctions between the ,depending jaws 8 and the connecting anges 8 and 1,4, I provide an outstanding rib or flange which preferably extends along Y the entire lower outside edge of the flange 4 and curves downwardly around the corners 16 between the flange 1 and the jaw webs 13 and extends diagonally downwardly and outwardly along said webs 13 to finally merge thereinto along the back face of the pedestal. The front face of the pedestal is desirably reinforced in a similar manner by a. rib or outstanding flange 17 which extends along the lower outer edge of the flange 3, curves downwardly around the corners 16 between said flange 3 and the webs 13 and extends downwardly, tapering and merging into the outer surface of the web 13 of the jaws. It will be clear that such a construction greatly strengthens the connection between the jaws and the connecting flanges 3 and l without substantivally increasing the weight of the pedestal.
In order to greatly increase the life of the pedestal, renewable wear plates 18 are desirably employed, said wear plates being preferably generally U-shape in cross section, presenting the web portions 19 toward each other and with the flange portions 2O extending longitudinally away from each other and embracing the jaws and more particularly the flange portions 13 thereof. The. flange portions 2O of the wear plates preferably taper toward their vertical midsection, as indicated at 21, and are connected to the adjacent Webs 13 by rivets or other connecting means 22,v passing through registering apertures in the flanges 20 and the flanges 13. By having a rivet or the like connecting each flange'20 and the associated flange 13 a certain amount of material is saved as compared with using through connecting means. In order to rigidify the construction, the outer faces of the webs 13 are preferably ribbed or increased in thickness, as indicated at 23, along the inner or' wear plate engaging sides thereof, said ribbed portions being extended to form bosses 24: through which the connecting means 22 passes.
In accordance with general practice the webs 11 only extend part way toward the flanges 3 and 4f, leaving apertures 25 for receiving the equalizer 10. The wear or liner plate 18 is similarly formed in this respect. When assembled the flanges 26 on the journal box 9 extend on either side of the wear plates 18 and guide the journal boxy for vertical movement, as will be understood.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a truck pedestal which is conveniently formed by casting and adequately reinforced at the critical points against breakage. The life of said pedestal Vis greatly increased by using replaceable wear or liner plates therewith, which plates are desirably formed U-shape in section with outwardly extending flanges embracing the associated edges of the pedestal and riveted thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A pedestal for connection with a railway truck comprising a connecting portion and a pair of jaws spaced to receive an associated journal box therebetween, the corners at the union of said jaws and the connecting' portion being reinforced by an outstanding rib on the inner and outer surfaces of said pedestal.
2. A pedestal adapted for connection with a Vrailway truck comprising a connecting portion and a pair of jaws spaced to receive an associated journal box therebetween, the union of said jaws with saidv connecting portion being reinforced by an outstandin rib extending along the lower edge of sait connecting portion, curved around the corners where the jaws connect thereto and extended part way along said jaws with the lower lends tapering in depth to gradually merge'into said jaws.
3. A pedestal comprising a horizontal U-shaped portion adaptedto embrace and be connected with the side frame of a rail-` way truck and a pair of jaws extending downwardly from the ends of said U-shapcd portion and spacedvto receive an associated journal box therebetween, the union of said jaws and said connecting portion being reinforced by an outstanding rib along the lower edge of the connecting portion with the ends thereof bent downwardly, extended along the jaws, and tapering to finally merge thereinto.

A pedestal comprising anges adapted to embrace and be connect ed with the side frame of a railway truck the outer portions of said flanges being ex-v tended downwardly to form a pair of jaws spaced to receive an associated journal box therebetween, the inside edges of said connecting flanges and jaws being reinforced by outstanding ribs on the inner and outer surfaces `of said pedestal along the lower edges of said flanges and continued at an angle thereto around the corners of the pedestal along the depending jaw portions.
5. A pedestal for connection with a railway truck comprising a connecting portion and a pair of jaws each comprising adjacent webs and outstanding flanges, and spaced to receive an associated journal box therebetween, wear plates U-shaped in section with outwardly extending flanges embracing the associated jaws and connectedl thereto, and separate means for connecting each flange of each wear plate to the correspondingflange of a jaw.
- 6. A pedestal adapted for connection with a railway truck comprising a connectingV portion and a pair of jaws spaced toreceive an associated journal box thereupstandingV between, and liner plates formed with web portions normally abutting the inner faces of said jaws and with outstanding flanges embracing the associated jaws and formed with free edgesv sloping outwardly and toward veach other from the upper and lower portionsthereof and connected thereto by separate means passing through the portion of each flange adjacent the union of said sloping. edges and the corresponding` thereinto, and wear plates embracing and attached to those portions of said jaws below said rib.
8. A pedestal comprising upstanding flanges adapted to embrace and be connected with the yside frame of arailway truck, the outer portions of said flanges being extended downwardly to form a air of jaws spaced to receive an associated journal box therebetween, andUesha-ped wear plates with webs engaging the adjacent jaw faces and flanges extending away from each other on either side of said jaws and each flange separately connected to the adjacent flange of the associated jaw.
