' My invention relates to the manufacture of cigarettesof that particular type commonly known as self-lighting cigarettes, an example of which is disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,327,139 issued January 6, 1920, and more especially to the yprovision of means to facilitate handling the cigarettes during the operation of tipping the same with the fulminate. Y

The primary object of my invention is to provide' a mechanical device for holdino' a plurality of cigarettes during the operation of tipping the same kwith fulminate either manually or throughthe instrumentality of a suitable machine of which the holder may constitute a part.r

vWith this principal `object in viewkmy invention consists in a two-part holder having cooperating members or jaws between which the cigarettes are gripped for manipulating the sameV in dipping an end thereof in the fulminate, the construction of the holder being such that it can be readily manipulated either manually or mechanically forreceiving and gripping the cigarettes for the dipping operation, and for releasing` them after the fulminate has dried; all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the accompanying drawings.

In carrying out my invention I employ two metal strips l0 10 T-shapein cross section for the major portion of their length, said strips being arranged side by side and connected together at their meeting edges by hinges 11 and 14, the hinges 11 being at the ends of the associated strips While the hinges 14 are located at suitable distances apart to brace the strips in hinged relation to eachother. These strips are adapted to be swung on the hinges to move the outstanding portionslOa thereof towards and away from each other for the purpose hereinafter explained, and in order to hold said strips in normal position or on a line with each other the ends thereof are notched, as at 12, for the engagement of bow-springs 13, the latter permitting a slight opening movement of the strips and the required tension for closing being exerted by curving the strips upward at opposite sides where the bow-spring engages, as shown at 10a in Figs. 4 and 5. Welded or otherwise secured to the upstanding portions `of the metal strips to extend outwardly therefrom are elongated gripping members 15 arcuate in cross section to correspond approximately with the circumference of a cigarette, C, so as to grip the same between them when said `strips Y are brought tooether on a line with each other as shown in dig. 4 of the drawings, the upper and lower ends of the gripping members being flared outwardly to facilitatel placing the cigarettes betweenthe same and so that the lower ends of the `cigarettes will not-bind and interfere with their being released.

The holder is used for Ythe purpose of handling a quantity of cigarettesin the operation of tipping them with fulminate in the s0 manufacture of self-lighting cigarettes, and may be operated manually or in connection with suitable machinery, the purpose of my invention in the present instance being to provide a holder in the use of which a plurality of cigarettes may be held while they are being dipped in the fulminate and during the drying process, and althoughl have shown the associated strips provided with only three pairs of cooperating gripping members spaced some distance apart they may be closer together and the length of the strips increased to receive a large number of'cigarettes for applying fulminate thereto in oneoperation.

In the manual operation of the holder the ends thereof are grasped in the hands of the operator and the strips swung on their hinges to open up the gripping members suiiiciently to receive the-cigarettes between them and then the bow-springs are'permitted'to function to close the gripping members and hold the cigarettes while they are beinfT dipped in the fulminate, and also while the tulminate is drying. It will be understood that in this operation of applying fulminate to the ends of cigarettes a suitable container for the fulminate is used, which may be in the nature of a trough.

As hereinbefore stated the principal object of my present invention is to provide a simple and eiltective holding means usable for the purpose of applying tulminate to one end of a self-lighting cigarette, and although it is adapted for manual use, as hereinbetore described, I contemplate also using the same in connection with a suitably constructed machine that will automatically place the cigarettes in between the gripping jaws, and after the cigarettes are tipped with the fuhninate provide for holding them during the drying process and subsequently release them.

I claim l. A holder for use in applying 'tulminate to selflighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges and having grippi members to receive the cigarettes between them, and springs connected to the strips to bring them to normal position for gripping the cigarettes.

2. A holder for use in applying fulminatc to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected to eachother at their contiguous edges, gripping members projecting from the strips to receive the cigarettes between them, and bow-springs engaging the ends of the strips to bring them to normal position for gripping the cigarettes.

3. A holder for use in applying ulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges and having notches in the outer edges of said strips near the ends thereof, bow-springs engaging the notches to bring the strips on a line with each other transversely, and gripping members projecting from said strips to receive the cigarettes between them.

4. A holder for use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges and having notches in the outer edges near the ends thereof, bow springs engaging the notches to bring' the strips substantially on a line with each other transversely, and curved gripping members projecting from said strips to receive the cigarettes between them. 1

5. A holder for use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges, springs connected to the strips tor bringing them on a plane with each other, and gripping members projecting from the strips and arcuate in cross-section to receive the cigarettes between them.

6. A holder tor use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges, gripping members projecting from the strips and arcuate in cross-section, and springs actuating the strips for moving the gripping members with respect to each other.

7. A holder for use in applying ulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges, gripping members projecting from said strips and arcuate in cross-section to receive the cigarettes between them, the inner ends of said gripping members being flared outwardly, and springs actuating the strips for moving the gripping members with respect to each other.

8. A holder for use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips hingedly connected together at their contiguous edges, gripping members projecting from said strips and arcuate in cross-section to receive the cigarettes between them, the inner and outer ends oit the gripping members be ing iared outwardly, and springs actuating the strips for moving the gripping members with respect to each other.

9. A holder for use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips T-shape in cross-section and hinged together at contiguous edges of the transverse portion of the strips, gripping members arcuate in cross-section and secured to the outstanding portion of the strips to project therefrom to receive the cigarettes between them, and bowsprings at the ends of the strips engaging notches in the outer edges thereof for actuating the strips to move the gripping members with respect to each other.

A holder for use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising parallel strips hinged to each other, members attached to said strips for movement to and from each other in clamping the cigarettes between them, the outer ends of the strips being curved upwardly at their outer edges, and bow-springs engaging the upturned edges for exerting a tension on the strips and cigarette engaging members carried thereby.

11. A holder for use in applying fulminate to self-lighting cigarettes comprising strips ot inverted T-shape in cross section arranged parallel and hinged together, the outer ends of said strips being curved upwardly at their outer edges, cigarette engaging members attached to and projecting upwardly from the inner sides of the upstanding members of the strips, and bow-springs at the ends of the strips engaging the upwardly curved edges thereof to exert tension on the strips and members in holding the cigarettes between said members.
