JoHN s. RODIGRASIS, or SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,426, dated May 16, 1876; application filed April 5, 1876.
my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometrical perspective view, showing the fastener in use; Fig. 2, an enlarged view of the fastener and a portion of the upper sash; and Fig. 3, a sectional view, showing the auxiliary fastener.
Like letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to that class of fasteners which are designed to be attached to the lower meeting-rail of the sash; and consists in a novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the bed-plate, lever, stops,
spring, locking-bolt, &c., as hereinafter more fully set forth and definitely claimed, by which a simple, cheap, and effective device of this character is produced.
zontally-arranged lever. 2, provided with the laterally-projecting bolt J. This lever is furnished with the vertical stud or thumb-piece K, and carries the short lever or locking-bolt L, which is pivoted to the lever 2 at N, and provided with the upwardly-projectingstud M.
A long flat spring, 0, is secured at P to the plate m, and. acts expansively against the back of the lever z, to force the bolt J into the holes H in the side rail of the upper sash. A thin metallic strip, 6, is let into the wood of the rail between the holes, to prevent the bolt from injuring the rail as the sash is moved up or down.
An auxiliary fastener, consisting of the bolt T, provided with the spring U, is inserted near the top of the side rail 6. This bolt is fitted "to work in an ordinary casing, F, its outer end S being reduced in size, and threaded to receive the thumb screw'or nut- Gr. It is also designed to enter a series of holes, H,
formed in the ways or rundlet of the casing A,
andconnected by a metallic rib or strip, i, after the manner of those formed in the rail 6 to receive the bolt J. I
In the use of my improvement the bedplate' m is attached to the top of the lower meeting-rail of the sash, near the side rail d, or in such a position that the bolt J will readily enter the holes H in the side rail 0 of the upper sash. D.
The object of the lever L is' to lock the bolt J either in or out of the holes H in the side rail 0, as desired. This is accomplished by turning the lever upon its pivotal support N' by means of the'stud M, bringing it into contact with the stop R, to hold the bolt in position, or'keep it in one of the holes and against the flange I, to keep it withdrawn.
It will be obvious that the upper sash may be partially lowered, and the lower sash par-- tially raised, and when they are in this position the two sashes may be coupled together by the bolt J, and moved up or down conjointly, the bolt T enabling the united sashes to be secured in any desired position, and also acting to fasten the upper sash in its place when it is detached from the lower. The
bolt may be withdrawn and retained in that with the stud M, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth and specified.
2. The rail 0, provided with the holes H and strips t, in combination with a windowfastener having the lever 2, bolt J, stop R, and flange I, substantially as set forth and specified.
JoHN s. RODIGRASS.
