This invention relates toindex devices of the type having movable index holders for displaying the classified subject matter of the indexes and more particularly to'that type in which the index holders'are mounted to swing laterally when moved out from a case in which a plurality of such holders are arranged in juxtaposition.
Objects of the invention are toarrange a plurality of index holders in a case as a protection from dustand defacement; toenable the holders to be moved outwardly from the case and swing apart more widely to display the indicia thereon; to provide'an improved mounting for the holders whereby one or more may be conveniently detached therefrom for inserting new index slips, rem-oving obsolete slips or for any other reason; and in general to improve index devices of this character and render them more compact and accessible. Referring tothe casing A. is constructed of wood or other suitwing details of able material and comprises a topl andbottom 2 to which the rearwall 3 and side walls 4 are suitably connected. are supported in a vertical position within the casing A being substantially perpendicular to the rear wall 3 and are in'the form of sheet metal panels provided with opposed flanges 5 forming elongate guide slots on channels for the insertion of index slips hearing suitable indicia according to the subject matter of the index. The' index holders B are provided with pintles 8 and 9 at the top and bottom edges,
thereof for pivotaily mounting the holders in. the sheet metal carriers C and several hold: are mounted in each carrier. The ends of the carriers C are bent to form recesses 10 and 11 to receive the pintles 8' and 9 respectiyely, for supporting the index holders. The pnitle 8 is slightly longer than the pintle 9,
and the recess 10 is slightly deeper than the recess 11., so that an index holder B is mounted in the carrier C by first inserting the pmtle 8 into the recess-1O 'to permit the pintle 9 to 'pintle 8 may be moved I upwardly into the hollow bore of'the stem to enable the pintle 9 to bemoved clear of the recess 11 and thus permit one or more index holders to be detached from the carrier. The pintle 8 can not be moved upwardly asuflicient distance to permit removal of the holders from the carrier when the lock is moved to the position indicatedirrFig. 5. I
In order to support'the carrier C in a vertical position a channel strip 16 isprovided with apertures 17 and smaller apertures 18 connected by a restricted opening 19 adjacent I the opposed ends thereofjto receive T-shaped projections 20 on the rear face of the carrier O. The projections 20 are adapted to be locked to the strip 16 by a latch lever 21 pivoted to the upper portion of the supporting strip 16. By moving the latchlever 21 to the positionindicated in F 1-, the lower end of the lever prevents the projections 20 from being moved upwardly through the restricted openings 19. o
The supporting strip 16 is provided with rearwardly converging flanges 17 which serve as a stop for limiting the rearward movement of the carrier C as will be hereinafter described. Guide strips 23 are suitably fixed to the channel strips 16 adjacent the upper end thereof and provide guide channels therebetween for guiding the vertical movement of the cylindrical head 24 on the lever 25. he lower end of the lever 25 is pivoted to'a bracket 26 suitably fixed to a plate 22' which is secured to a supporting back 23 by screws and the back 28 is secured to the realwall 3 by screws.
A second lever 30 is pivoted at its center 31 to the lever 25 and the upper end of the lever 30 is provided -with a cylindrical head 32 which is movable vertically in opposed guide channels formed bychannel strips 33 and 34: which are suitably fixed t0 the upper port-ion of the plate 27. Downward movement of the lever 30 in the guide channels is limited by a stop 34; suitably fixed to the plate 27 below "the strips 33 and 34. The lower end of the lever 31 is provided with. a head 35 pivoted at 36 to the lower end of the channel strip 16. From the above description it will be observed that the levers 25'and form a lazy tong which enable the carrier C to be moved hori Zontally in and out of the casing A in the 30 plane of movement of the levers. Outward movement of the carrier C is limited by a strip 37 secured to the bottom 2 of the casing by screws, so that after the carrier has been movedoutwardly from the casing as far as possible the index holders B may be swung about "vertical axes and manipulated somewhat after the manner of leaves of a book i to permit inspection of the index or for any otherreason. The inward movement of the 40 carrier C is limited by the diverging flanges l7 which abutagainst the channel strips 33 anu 34.
A suitable number of carriers C are provided in the casing A, each being similarly connected to the casing to be horizontally extended therefromand having index holders B supported for vertical swinging movement when thecarriers are moved outwardly from the casing as shown in Fig. 3. so A salient characteristic of the invention consists in that each holder may be moved out from a bank of holders to a position where it may be swung through a wide angle (90) to present the index matter squarely to the 5.3 view of the user. In this aspect the invention is applicable wherever a group of panels are mounted on a common back (for example, in a row on a wall) whether or not the'panels are enclosed in a casing such as A.
I claim: 1. Anindex device comprising a back, a plurality of index holders arranged side by side perpendicular to said back, carriers for supporting said holders, supports for said 0.; carr ers, and lazy-tong mechanlsm having one fixed and one sliding connection with said back and supports to maintain the front and rear edges of the holders substantially parallel with the back in all positions thereof.
2. An index device comprising a back, a plurality of index holders arranged side by side perpendicular to said back, ca 'riers for supporting said holders, means on each carrier for locking said holders thereto, and lazy-tong mechanism having one fixed and one sliding connection with said back and also being connected with each carrier for movably mounting the carrier on the back to enable the advance of a holder relative to another holder and being adapted to maintain the front and rear edges of the holders substantially parallel with said back in all positions.
3. An index device comprising a back and carriers, a plurality of index holders arranged side by side perpendicular to said back and removably mounted on said carriers, said holders having pintles, bearing recesses on said carriers, one end of each of said carriers being provided with a hollow stem having a clearance recess to receive a pintle when the index holders are attached to or removed from the carrier, said stem being adapted to be moved to such a position as to prevent the removal of the holders therefrom, and means movably mounting the carriers on the back to advance a holder relative to another holder and adapted to maintain front and rear edges of the holders substantially parallel to said back in all positions thereof.
4. An index device comprising an-index carrier having opposed recesses, an index holder having pintles to extend into said recesses, and a hollow stem in one of said recesses having a slot into which one pintle is inserted when the index holder is mounted on or removed from the carrier, said stem adapted to be moved to such a position that the slot is moved away from the pintle to pre vent removal of the holder from the carrier.
5. An index device, comprising a back, a plurality of index holders arranged side by side perpendicular to said back, carriers for said index holders, said carriers and holders having parts formed for cooperation to hingedly mount the holders on the carriers, means suspending said carriers from said back adapted to permit relative movement of said carriers thereto in parallel relation, and manually operable means adapted to normally prevent detachment of an index holder from said carriers.
