G. J. HASTEROK ET ALK MUSICAL INSTRUMENT HOLDER Filed April 25. 1927 n. uIl n Il.

GERALD J. Has'riiiaon AND HENRY TENNns, OF'GHICAGOJLLINOIS Application ed April. 25,
Our invention pertains to musical instrument holders and more particularly toa holder especially adapted 'for banjos, guiy tars, and the like.
At present there is considerable demand on the market for a k.holder capable ol' receiving and maintaining an instrument rsuch as the banjoin a vertical position. The reason for this is that the instrument is more readily accessible to the musician when it is in -a vertical position than in any other position; also, when it is in a vertical'position it occupies less space and is less apt to be damaged.
We propose to provide a highly simple holder for a banjo or the like adapted to receive and hold the instrument in a vertical position and capable of resisting any'force tendingto tip the instrument.
ln accordance with thefeatures ol our invention we provide a metallic frame covered with upholstery or the like supported by a lThe is adapted to receive the lower portion oit the bodyrot the instrument, such for example as the resonator of the banjo. In the preferred forni` of our invention which is adapted to receive a banjo we provide the frame with otl'set portions capable of bearing against the rim of the banjo.
Other objects and advantages of our in vention will more fully appear romthe detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates several embodiments thereof and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the preferred.
form of our invention showing it supporting f Figure 2 is a plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1; Y. Figure v3 is an enlarged yplan'view of our novel frame showing a part of the upholstery broken away to illustratethe metallic framework; j
'Figure l is` an enlarged detail sectional View taken onv substantially the linelV-IV oft Figure 3, looking in a direction indicatedv by the arrows and showingvthe manner in which theleg is connected tothe frame;

Figure 6 is a plan View or" 'the holder shown in Figure 5.
' In the drawings: s Y
rvlhe reference character 10 denotes gener-V ally a holder embodying the vfeatures of our invention and particularly `adapted to support a banjo in a verticalposition. lnFig' i ures 1 and 2 we have'shownV a banjo 11 and the manner in which it v'is' supported by the holder 10. rlfhe banjo comprises essentially a neck portion 12, a resonator 13, anda rim 14. rlfhe holder 10 comprises aV rectangular frame 15 preferably made of metal rod. This frame is adaptedto embrace the lower portions of the resonator 13 and the rim 14. The frame 15 is provided with rectangular oilset portions 16, each of which comprises a bent rod 17 suitably secured to a corner of the; metallic frame 15. LThe rame115 and theportions 16 are covered by a suitable plush upholstery 18. It it isfso desired, a covering otrubber may be used-in place ol the upholstery'18. Thevtwo offsetportions 16 einY Vtend inwardly from the frame rod 15 and are disposed within the dimensionsoi the `frame. j These-portions are directly opposite each other andV are adapted to engage lower portions of the peripheryy 01" the rim 14.
The Vframe 15 is Ysupported by four out wardly slanting legs 2O disposed at the corners of the rame.- Each leg comprises a metal rod 21 having its upper end. 22 threaded. The lower end of thel rodmay'be provided with a knurled portion 23,7by meansv of which the rod 'or leg may be turned. rlfhey end 22 of' each legis threaded into a sleeve 24 which is threadedinto an opening 25 in the tubular rod frame 15.H Therod 21 is its appearance. Furthermore', it will be `,evi-
dent that the holder 10 may be readily dis#v mantled by unthreading the legs 2O fromthe frame `-15v thusaugmentingthe portable charclin In use, thev holder 10 supports the banjo i 1 in a substantially vertical position. In placingthe'instrument in the holder the instru-y ment is simply dropped downwardlyY onto.,
erly align itself with the holder.
zov
the frame 15. The resonator 13 of the banjo upon falling Within the dimensions of the frame immediately aligns itself rWith the edges of the `frame so that the rim is brought to rest on the offset portions 16. Furthermore, due to the slanting legs 20 it is practically impossible to tilt the holder 10 irrespective of the position to which the banjo may be tipped. Obviously this is verydesirable since the instrument may be very badly damaged should it fall to the ground. Moreover, our holder occupies relatively little space and may be placed close to the musicians position Where the instrument contained in it is readily accessible to the musician. VVhenhe is through playing the instrument all he has to do is simply place it on the frame of the holder and it Will prop- From the foregoing it Will also be appar;
ent that our device may be very economically manufactured from metallic tubing. As a Whole it presents a pleasant appearance to the eye. Our device is not only useful to musicians but may be used in musical shops as a display stand' for the banjo or other instrument.
In Figures 5 and 6 We have shown a modified form of holder 10 Which is substantially like that shown in Figure 3, With the eX- ception that it does not contain the odset portions 16. The holder is particularly designed to receive the lower portion of the body 14 of a guitar 11. The holder c0m- 'prises a frame, 15 and four slanting legs 20 connected thereto, as shown in Figure f1. The periphery of the guitar body 14 abuts against theends oftheV frame 15v and therloiver portion of the body 14 extends a slight distance below the plane of the frame 15. f f
7e desire itr understood that although We have illustrated and described in detail the preferred forms of our invention, the inventionis not to be thus limited, but only in so far as defined by the scope and spirit of the appended claim.
IVe claim as ourinvention A musical instrument holderfor banjos and the like, comprising an elongated hori- Zontal frame of straight side members, the said frame being shapedv to receivea portion of .the body ofA a banjo vand the like to solely supportit in a substantially vertical position, andlegs connected to the frame to support it above the floor.V
In testimony whereof We have hereunto subscribed our names at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. l
