This invention relates to I an improved scrubbing device adapted for scrubbing and cleaning metal, glassand other surfaces to remove foreign matter adhering thereto.
5 One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character adapted for use in cleaning metal, glass and other surfaces which is of a convenient shape for use in scrubbing and which is made entirely or substantially throughout of abrasive material whereby it will not becomeinefi'ective for the purpose through the elimination of the abrasive portion'by reason of wear. 7 I V A further object is that ofproviding an article of this character capable of being readily and economically constructed and which will eificiently accomplish the purposes for which it is provided. g lVith these and further objects in mind reference is had to, the annexed specification taken in connection with the drawings, which latter illustrate one practical embodiment of theinvention and in which w Figure 1 is an elevational view or a tubular braided wire fabric, a portion-thereof being shown in expanded condition, together with a mandrel or former which may be employed fabric forming the pa-d maybe of greater in expanding the wire mesh fabric.

section, of a sheath prepared forthe reception of a pad'and the pad prepared for insertion within the sheath.
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the completed scrubbing device, and, v
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the complet- 49 ed device.
1n the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith l designates a tubular metallic braid formed of metal strands'or threads 2 which is made as a fiat braidbut which may be exp andcd to separate thethreads or strands with angular edges=5 which-are adapted to exert an abrasive action upon surfaces to be cleaned when the threads have been separated from each other after the manner described.
I propose to utilize the expanded tubular wire mesh, formed as above described, in'the of awire, thread or ordinary cord and then "reversing the tubular section '6 to bring the stitching 7 within the sheath thus forminga sheath 8 for the receptionof a suitable filler material for which Imay employ apad 9 constructed as will be more fully described hereinafter, although variousother kinds and arrangeme'nts of filler material may be employed in forming the .pad as will be apparent 7 0 to those skilled in the art.
Thepad 9, like the sheath 8, is formed in the present illustrated embodiment of the invention from a, tubular expanded wire mesh constructed after-the manner shown in 1 Fig. 1 of the' drawings.
The-sectionof expanded tubular wire mesh length than the section forming the sheath 8 and theopen ends thereof are secured together as by stitches or loops 10, and wires or cords 11 located withinthe pad are employed to drawtheopposite ends ofthe tubular section towards each; other and thus form folds 12 in the pad as the fabric material is folded upon itself to increase thebulk of thePad.
In assembling the parts to form the completed devicethe padSis inserted within the sheath .8and theends of the cords or wires 11 are secured to the stitched ends of the sheath so ;by means of .links'or stitchesl l as shown in Figia I The edgeof the tubular material ad- 'jacentto theopen end of the sheath is inturned and stitchedtogether-as indicated at 15 to closethe end of the sheath and form as the completed scrubbing device .16. The
cord-s or wires 11 hold the pad :9 against'ex-L Ipansion asshown, and, whenthe ends of the wires are securedito. the ends of thesheath by stitches 14s the wiresllprevent longitudinal ing the end of the composite sheath.
expansion of the sheath which with braided tubular fabric as shown would result in de creasing the diameter of the sheath and thus altering the shape of the completed structure. WVhilc I have shown the sheath 8 as being formed of a single section of the expanded tubular wire mesh fabric, I may employ two or more sections telescoped one within the other and with a common stitching for clos- In like manner I may employ a plurality of tubular sections telescoped one within the other in forming the pad 9, or if desired the padinay be formed by flattening a section of the tubular wire mesh fabric and folding the flattened materialupon itself to a suliicient extent to produce a pad of the desired thickness.
WVhile I have described above a preferred form of my invention I may form the pad 9 partially of metallic wire mesh and partially of cloth or other suitable filler material, such, for example, as woven or unwoven metal strands or threads, orI may form the pad entirely of unwoven metal strands, threads, or
other suitable abrasive material prepared in any desired manner without departlngfrom the spirit and scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims. 7
It is to be understood also that the cords or wires 11 employed for holding theparts from undue expansion. may be of any desired numher, and may in certain cases, as where flatly folded tubular Woven metal fabric material is employed in forming the pad, be connected with the opposite ends of the sheath, and may or may not be operatively connected with the ends of the pad.
WVhat I claim is:
1. A scrubbing device comprising a pad of abrasive material, a cover therefor comprising a section of stretched wire mesh fabric arranged in the form of a tube over said pad,
and means connecting opposite ends ofsaid tube to limit the expansion of the same longitudinally.
: i 2. A scouring device including a tube of resilient material disposed in the form of corrugat ons, means associated with said tube "for maintaining such corrugations, and a maintaining such corrugations, and a sheath of flexible metal-fabric enveloping such pad andhaving its ends closed to retain the same.
4. A scouring device including a tube of resilient material disposed inlthe form of corrugations, means associated with said tube for maintaining such corrugations, and a sheath of fiemble metal fabric enveloping such pad and having its ends closed to retain the same, and means associated with nature.
