My invention relates to locks, and particularly to that form of a door securing device 'which when operatively engaged will permit the door to be partially opened. The invention will be best understood from the' following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawing of a speciiic embodiment of the invention selected for illustrative purposes, while the scope of the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the'appended claims.

'Referring to the drawing I havel herein shown a locking mechanism having a' casing 1 mounted on a door 3', while adapted to engage with said locking mechanism is a bolt in the i'orm of a bar 5` carried by a support 7 mounted on the frame 9 of the door.
As illustrated the bar 5 at one end is provided with a spherical head 11 slidabl'y mounted in the support 7 ,the body of the bar extending' through the slottedwall 13 of said support so that the bar can both slide .in said support and swing in a horizontal plane. At its opposite end thebar is provided at opposite sides `with groovesfl, thus forming a head 17 on that end of the bar.4 f
The bottom of the casing 1 at theend thereof adjacent the edge ofthe door is herein provided with a T-shaped opening having the inner enlarged portion 19 and outer narrow portion 21 respectively corresponding to and adapted to receive the head 17 of theibar and that portion of the bar 5 between 'the grooves 15, this construction providing that when 1927. serial No. 185,835.
the door is closed to move the casing 1 toward 'the projecting end ofthe bar said end will enter the opening in the casing. l
In said casing adjacent the opening for the bar is a segmental member 23 pivoted at 25 -55 on a plate 27'supported on and projecting upward from the bottom wall of the casing. At the end thereof above the opening for the bar the member 23 is provided with a cam surfacer 29 adapted to bestr'uck by the bar 00 when the latter enters the' casing so as to turn the mfember'23 ori` itspivot counter'clockwise as viewed in Fig.A 6. The end of the member 23 oppositethe'cam plate 29 bears against the abutment surface 31 of aslide 33l guidedr 65 upon' tliebottom of the casing. As shown in Fig. 4 the member 33 at its right hand end is in `the form of a fla-t slotted plate 35 the sidesl of which when the slide is moved to the right by engagement of the bar with the cam plate' 29 cover those portions of the part 19 of the opening for thebar which extend beyond the' edges of the part 21y of said opening. This will prevent removal `of the bar from the casing and lock yit secu'relythereto. 75
' As illustrated in Figs'. 3 and 6 the side of the casing adjacent the opening for the bar is slotted as indicated `at 37, the width ofthe slot 37 corresponding to the width of that portion of the bar whichfis between the grooves 15. This construction permits the door to be opened afdistanc'e determined by the length of the bar. v
As illustrated` the member 33 is provided with laterally placed notches 39 the upper 85 of which cooperates with a detent 41 mounted for sliding movement in upper guides 43. A spring 45 is provided for urging the detent towardthe member 33 south at when the latter is slid to the right as viewed in Fig. 1 the 90 detent 41 will snap into the notches 39 and hold the plate fin its right. hand position, in which position the end of the bar cannot be removed from the casing.
As illustratedmear the'left hand end of the 95 casing is shown a block 45 mounted for sliding movement in a lower guide 47 carried by the casing, this block being urged to the right as viewed in Fig. 1 by a springy49. Carried by' the bloc'k 45 and movable therewithis a 100 eashownin cam member comprising a rod 51 and the two cam portions 53, the upper portion 53 as shown in Fig. 1 being adapted to vcontact the right hand end of a lower arm 55 when the block 45 is slid to the left. As shown the end of the spindle 71 is provided with opposite laterally arranged notches 89 which carry spring clips 91. When the knob is pulled away from the casing as shown in Fig. the spring clips are released and the ends thereof move pasttheperipheral wall of the spindle and engage with the exterior wall of the casingl, which holds the spindle in-its withdrawn position. Forcing the knob inward compresses the clips 91 and allowsV the spring 87 to move the spindle inward so as to enga e it with the key barrel. rAs illustrated t e notches 39, guides 43 and 47, cams 53, etc., aremade-in duplicate at Vopposite sides of the center lines of appropriate yparts oftheV device to permity rearrangement to adapt the device for use lon doors which swing clockwise and counter-l clockwise. Althoughl have described for purposes of illustration one particular embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that Within the scope of Vthe invention wide deviations may be made without departing from the spirit of the-invention.
Claims: y v 1. A door locking mechanism; having, in combination, a bolt adapted to be s'lidably`carried by apart which is stationary relative to said door, locking mechanism carried by said door, saidy locking mechanism and bolt being so constructed that when said door is closed the end of said bolt will engage'with said mechanism and automatically actuate it into locked position, said mechanism permitting relative movement of Vsaid Abolt when locked thereto whereby said door'may be opened partially andV closed, and manually actuated means 'for releasing said bolt from said mechanism with the door closed. 2. A door locking lmechanism having, in combination, a bolt, means slidably `carrying said bolt for limited movement relative to a vpart which is stationary relative to said door, locking mechanism adapted Lto engage and `automatically lock said bolt to said doorwhen the latter is closed where bysaid door may be only partially opened, ,key controlled mechanism Ifor actuating said locking mechanism,

A door locking mechanism having, in combination, a bolt, means slidably carrying said bolt for limited movement relative to a part Which is stationary relative to said door, locking mechanism adapted t-o engage and automatically lock said bolt to said door When the latter is closed whereby said door may be only partially opened, key controlled mechanism for actuating said locking mechanism into unlocked position from one side of said door, and means operative from the other side of said door for rendering said key controlled mechanism inoperative.
4. A door locking mechanism having, in combination, a bolt, means slidably carrying said bolt for limited movement relative to a part Which is stationary relative to said door, locking mechanism adapted to engage and automatically lock said bolt to said door When the latter is closed whereby said door may be only partially opened, key controlled mechanism for actuating said locking' mechanism into unlocked position from one side of said door, and means operative from the other side of said door for rendering said key controlled mechanism inoperative and also for actuating said locking mechanism into unlocked position.
5. A door locking mechanism having, in combination, a bar, locking mechanism Jfor cooperation With said bar, said bar and mechanism being so constructed that one may be carried by said door and the other by a part which is stationary relative to said door, means.for slidably supporting said bar, said locking mechanism comprising a casing having an opening Which said bar is adapted to enter, and means in said casing cooperating with the end of said bar for preventing Withdrawal of said end from said casing.
6. A door locking mechanism having, in combination, a bar, locking mechanism for c0- operation with said bar, said bar and mechanism being so constructed that one may be carried by said door and the other by a part which is stationary relative to said door, means for slidably supporting said bar, said locking mechanism comprising a casing having an opening which said bar is adapted to enter, means in said casing cooperating with the end of said bar for preventing Withdrawal of said end from said casing, said last named means being actuated by insertion of said end into said opening.
7. A door locking mechanism having, in combination, a bar, locking mechanism for cooperation With said bar, said bar and mechanism being so constructed that one may be carried by said door and the other by a part which is stationary relative to said door, means for slidably supporting said bar, said locking mechanism comprising a casing having an opening which said bar is adapted to enter, means in said casing cooperating with the end of said bar for preventing Withdrawal of said end from said casing, said last named means being actuated by insertion of said end into said opening, and key controlled means for rendering said means inoperative.
