Be it known that l, Bannion-in Fnnnnn-ir, a citizen of Russia, residing at Coney Island, Kings county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in locks of the variety used for doors, etc. One of the objects of` my invention is to provide a lock mechanism a part of which is removable, that is to say, one of the knobs thereof which acts to move the bolts of the lock. A further object is to provide a lock mechanism having a plurality of bolts and mea-ns to actuate the bolts in unison to release the door or other similar element to which the mechanism may be attached. Other features of improvement will be set forth in the following description of the device, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein z- Figure 1 is a sectional face view of the lock, the section being taken on a line 1-1 in Fig. 2;

` My improved lock consists of a casing 8, which contains the main bolt 9, supplemental bolts or carriers 10 and 11, and the operating mechanism for said bolts or carriers. The bolt 9 is arranged to enter an opening 12in a keeper 13, while the bolts or carriers 10 and 11 each carry'means to engage openings 14 and 15 in the ends of said keeper 13. The bolts or carriers 1() and 11 are each provided with a yieldable nose-piece 16 mounted in a socket 17 in said Specification of Letters Patent.

bolts or carriers 10 and 11, a spring 18 being provided to normally maintain the nosepieces in extended position. The bolts 10 and 11 are arranged to move longitudinally of the casing 8, in the direction of the arrows 19, andare provided with slots 20 to engage projections 21 carried by the casing Each bolt 10 and 11 carries male camniembers 22 to engage female cam-recesses formed in oscillatable plates 24 and 25. rhe plates 24 and 25 are pivotally connected to the casing by' means of a thimble which is also rotatably mounted on said casing, said thimble having a flange 27 at one end thereof and a collar 28 at the opposite end thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The plates24 and 25 are arranged to be actuated independently of each otner, one (plate 24) being actuated exteriorly of a door 29 for instance, and the plate 25 interiorly of the said door. The plate is oscillated by means of a knob 30, having a square end 31 (in this instance) to engage a squared socket 32 in the thimble 26. The
thimble 26 is also provided with a cylindrical opening 33 engaged by a round teat carried by a shank 35, which is connected at its outer end to a lock mechanism 36 illustrated in a general way in Fig. 2. The shank carries arms 3?, having pins 38 to engage headings 39 carried by the main bolt 9. The bolt 9 also carries other headings 40 to be engaged by pins 41 carried by arms 42 extending from the flange 27 of the rotatable thimble 26. Sha-nk 35 is further provided with another arm 43, having a pin 44 to engage a slot 451 in the plate 24.
The main bolt 9 is maintained in normal extended position by springs 45 which surround guide-pins 46 supported at their inner end by a bracket 47. At its outer end, bolt 9 is supported by the walls of the opening 48 in the casing 8. To permitJ of the movement of the tongues 10 and 11, the casing is provided with elongated openings 48a. rlhe knob 30 is removably mounted in the thimble 26 in order that it can be taken out to prevent the bolts from being` operated interi rly of the door. The bolt 9 and nosepieces 16 will automatically move inwardly due to the inclined walls 49 and 50,
respectively, When the door is closed, and will be returned to normal position by the springs 45 and 18, respectively, after said bolt and nose-pieces have alined with their respective openings 'in the keeper 13. The door Will nouT be locked and cannot be opened unless a key is employed to rotate shank 35 or the knob 30 to rotate plate 25. When the knob 30 is rotated, the bolt 9 will be moved inwardly against the tension of the springs 45, as pins 41 bear against the headings 40 on bolt 9. rEhe plate 25 Will also be rotated, Las said plate is fastened to the rotatable thimble 26, in this instance, by a spline 51. lNhen plate 25 is rotated, the bolts 10 and 11 Will be moved in the direction of the arrows 19, against tie tension of 'the leaf-springs 52 by the action of the cams 22 and cam-recesses 23. rlhis movement will be suihcient to free the nose-pieces from the keeper', and bolt 9 will also be moved in sultliciently to clear said nosepieces. The described movement of the said bolts will permit the door to be opened. Should a key be used to operate the lock 36, the shank 35 will be rotated, causing pins 38 on arms 37 to move the bolt 9 inwardly and pin 44 on arm 43 to rotate plate 24, as said pin engages the slot 45 in said plate. It will be apparent that the bolts are operated by the actuation of either the knob 30 Vor the lock mechanism 36. The socket 32 in the thinible may be of any desired shape, but the projection 31 on knob 30 must be of a corresponding shape.
One of the advantages of my improvedl mechanism is that the door can not be opened from the inside Without the use of the knob and if the knob 30 should be removed, the door can not be opened from the inside. The key lock mechanism 36 will be preferably of the cylinder variety.
By means of my improved lock mechanism, a door can not be opened from the inside should the knob 30 be removed; hence should a thief enter a room, through a Window opening, he could not pass out of the room through the door, as the lock mechanism could not be operated. The door, however, could be opened from the outside by means of a proper key.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:-
1. In a lock, a bolt arranged for a. reciprocating movement, a plurality of slidably mounted bolts, a yieldable nose carried by each slidable bolt, means to actuate said slidable bolts, and an oscillatable shank arranged to act-nate the slidable bolt operating means and also the reciprocatable bolt.
2. In a lock, a casing, a rotatable thimblo carried therebv, a plate'secured to said thimble. a second plate loosely mounted upon said thimble, bolts engaged by said plates, a knob removably secured to said thiinble to actuate the plate secured thereto, and a key operated mechanism to operate the other of said plates.
3. 1n a lock, a casing, a rotatable thimble carried thereby, a plate secured to said thimble having cam-recesses therein, a second plate loosely mounted on said thimble having cam slots therein, bolts having cams engaging said recesses and means to actuate said plates Yindependently of each other.
4. 1n a lock, a reciprocable main bolt, a beading on opposite surfaces of said bolt, a supplemental tongue adjacent the main bolt, a plurality of independently acting devices to operate the supplemental bolt, a shank, arms carried thereby to engage one of the headings onV the main bolt and one of the supplemental tongue actuating devices, and means engaging the other beading on the main bolt and arranged to actuate the other supplemental bolt actuating device, Without operating said Shank.
5. 1n a lock, the combination of a keeper having an opening intermediate its ends, and an opening in each end, a casing, a bolt carried thereby to engage the opening intermediate the ends of the keeper, bolts to engage the openings at the ends of said keeper, slidably supported by said casing and arranged for movement longitudinally thereof, a yieldablysupported nose carried by each of the bolts last named, and arranged to engage a corresponding opening at the ends of the keeper, a plurality of actuating devices forsaid bolts, and means to operate said actuating devices independently of each other.
6. 1n a lock, a casing, a bolt carried thereby arranged for reciprocation, carriers slidably supported by said casing, a yieldable nose carried by each carrier, means to actuate said bolt, and means to actuate the slidable carriers.
7. 1n a lock, a casing, a bolt carried thereby arranged for reciprocation, carriers slidably supported by said casing, a yieldable nose carried by each carrier, an oscillatable plate to actuate the carriers, and means to operate said plate.
8. VIn a lock, a casing, a bolt carried thereby arranged for reciprocation, carriers slidably supported by said casing, a yieldable nose carried by each carrier, and means common to the bolt and carrier to operate the same.
9. In a lock, a casing, a bolt carried thereby, a beading carried by said bolt at its inner end, a supplemental bolt adJacent thereto, a plate to actuate said supplemental bolt having` a slot, an oscillatable shank. an arm carried thereby to engage said beading. andan arm also carried .by the saidshank to engage said slot, all arranged so that the Said bolts Will be operated when said shank from its cooperating bolt operating mechzln is actuated. nsm. l0
