FASTENING DEVICE Application filed March 12, 1928'. Serial No. 260,950.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for securing picture hooks to ornaments of penetrable material and it is my object to produce a device which will be small,

'5 cheap, efficient and securely hold the hook and ornament together, which may be driven by a single blow of the hammer or press, which will be cheap and speedy in production, and

which may be used with either sheet metal or wire hooks.

The fastener, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 6 and 8, comprises a sheet metal piece having a top portion 1 provided with raised, or concavoconvex, portions 2 and 3 and depending prongs 4 and 5 which are struck down from 5 opposite side edges of the top portion 1.

In the form shown in Figs. 3, 4, 7 and 9 the prongs 6 and 7 instead of being struck down from the edges of the top portion 8 are formed from the body of the top portion as best shown in Fig. 7. This form also has the two raised portions 9 and 10.

These fasteners, in either form, may be quickly and cheaply punched from sheet metal.

The ornament usually used with picture hooks is a covered wooden button and it has hook into the wood have been used. These methods increase the labor cost of assembly and retard the output. i

In assembling the hooks and ornaments by my invention a sheet metal hook 11 is laid on the back of a covered button 12 and the securing device is laid over the hook with its top portion 1 across the hook and the prongs 4 and 5 on either side of the hook. The prongs are then driven into the button by a single blow of the hammer or press and 69 the parts are held securely together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If desired, and to prevent rocking, shifting or sliding of the hook on the ornament, the sheet metal hook may be provided with notched edges 1314 as shown in Fig. 10 or with apertures 1516 as shown in Fig. 11 through which notches or apertures the prongs pass so that the hook cannot move on the ornament.

In securing a wire hook 17 to an ornament 18 as shown in Figs. 3 and t the hook is preferably formed as shown in Fig. 5 with flat spots 16 in the wire where it contacts with the ornament. The wire hook is laid on the ornament at the fiat spot and the fastening device is laid over it with the two raised portions 2-3 or 910 over the flat spots in the wire. A single blow of the hammer or press forces the prongs into the ornament and secures the parts together with the wires in the raised portions of the fasteners.

My fastener is universal in that it may be used either with wire or sheet metal hooks and the hooks may be so made to co-operate therewith that they cannot move on the orna- 35 ment.

I claim 1. A device for securing picture hooks to penetrable ornaments comprising a flat top portion, raised portions on either side thereof and prongs formed integrally from said top portion the raised portion of the top part adapted to overlie a picture hook, said prongs entering the ornament the hook being in direct contact with the ornament and between 55 the fastener and the ornament.

2. A picture hook and ornament comprising a wire picture book, a penetrable ornament and a fastening device comprising a top portion, raised portions on either side thereof, 379

depending prongs formed integrally therewith, said raised portions overlying the wire hook with the prongs engaging the ornament whereby the hook and ornament are secured together the hook being in direct contact with the ornament and between the fastener and the ornament.

3. A picture cord device comprising a penetrable ornament, a picture hook in direct contact with the back of the ornament and a metal fastening device with prongs at either end thereof overlying and in contact with the picture hook with the prongs entering the ornament whereby the parts are secured together.
