This invention relates .tofhinges and particularly to what areknown as covered ,joint hinges; andthe objectof the invention isto provide a hinge of the class specified, onev of the butts of which is fashioned from ay single piece of sheet metal, thecentral portion of which is apertured and folded or fashionedk to form the pintle bearing portion of the butt, and a hood partially encircling saidpintle bearing portion to conceal orfpartiallyconceal the joint of the hinge; a further object being to, provide a hinge butt of thek class specified-wherein thesheet of metal from which said butt isfformed is folded upon itself, a number of times,to provideamultiple wall for the pintle bearing or bearings'` ofthe hinge butt to produce strong anddurable bearings; a furtherobjectbeing to. so
construct the butt of; the hinge and espef` cially the pintle bearing portion thereof as to maintain said bearings against separation when subjected to stress orstrain, and'to pro- .duce a butt havinga neat .and finished ap-r. pearance,1and one which l canL be producedl at l nominal cost; andl with theseand' other .0b-H
jects in view, the invention consists in av hinge of the class and forl the purposespecified,
whichvis simple. in construction, eiiicientin use, and which is constructed as hereinafterA described and claimed.
n Theinvention is fully `disclosed in the following specificatio-n, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the.,
separate parts of my `improvement, are designated by suitable reference V4characters in each ofthe views, and in which f Fig. 1 is a side and sectional View `offone form ofhinge made accordingto my invention. v f
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 offFig; 1. Fig. 3 is a section onthe line 3-3 of Fig. 1 of one butt only of the hinge.
Fig. L1 is a View similar to Fg. ASibut showing a modification. 45' Fig. 5 isa view similar to Fig. 2but 'showing only one butt of the hinge andshowing amodiication.V t
' Fig. 6 is aview similar to Fig. 5 butshowing a section through` another area of kthe 50 butt; and,
Fig. 7 is a sectional, detail view showing the first step in the formation of oneof my improvedhingebutts. f'
In practice, I employ two hinge :butts 10 i and 11,).the butt 11 being of any conventional form and consisting in Vthe "construction, shown, of a single sheet of metal, fashioned centrallyto form circular pintle bearings 12 and intermediate recesses 13 for receivingthe pintle bearings of the butt 10. The sides of the sheet of metal from which the butt 11 is formed are brought together and secured tov forman attaching plate portion 14. a i,
Thebutt 10, as shown inFigs. 1 to Slinclusive, is fashioned from a single sheetof metal, the central portion of which is `provided with spaced apertures which form intermediate the pintle bearings of said butt whenl come pleted, recesses lrifor` receiving the pi'ntle bearings 12 ofthe/butt 11;- yThe central aper.- tured l'portion `of the sheet of metal `from' e which the `butt 10, is formed is foldedor otherf wise fashioned to form spaced, circular pintlebearings 16, having as seen in Fig. 2 'of the drawing, three outer wall members 17,L 187 and? 19 and one' inner wall member 20. VInf forming the hingebutt 10,'the sheet of metal of the drawing,\so as to bringthethreefwalls.
. 17, 18 and 19V one upon thepther.V l/Vhenin this position, said walls `may be welded orl otherwise secured together, after which the is first foldedfin the manner seen in Fig..` 7
the sidelOfisgbrought upon the side 10band; i
may be securedther'etoby riveting,l welding, g
`'sheet from which the butt' 10 is formed, in
or otherwise, especially at the point 21,I note i arranged adjacent the flat part 23 ofthe wall A shoulder` for Alimiting the relative movement of the butts and 11 in one direction, and this sto shoulder also constitutes the end oi the hood portion which is formed by the outer Wall 19, and extends longitudinally of the ere the apertures are located in the sheet, these apertures extend through the walls 17, 18 and 20 as clearly seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing, thus leaving a single outer wall or hood 19 which is a continuation of the wall 19. With this construction, suflicient clearance is provided between the bearings 12 and the hood portion 19" to prevent the marring of the finish that may be applied to the bearings 12.` But, in Fig. 4 of the drawing, I have shown in addition to the -Wall 19, a hood portion including an extension of the wall 18 as at 18, which result is accomplished by simply shortening the dimensions of the v,apertures in the sheet from which the butt is formed, to provide for the recesses to receive the hearings 12 of the butt 11. Aside from this modification, the structure shown in Fig.'
4 is identical withrthat shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive.
.urea represents the hinge butt, 26 the wall similar to the wall 17, 27 the wall similar to the wall 18, and 28 corresponds to the wall 19;-'29 is the fold in the sheet of metal from` which the butt v25 is formed similar to the fold 22, 30 the fold similar to the fold 24, and 31 the fold similar to the fold'23. In other words, b extending the overlapping portions of t e walls as described, the stop 24 as seen in Fi s. 2: and 3 has been extended around to t e fold 31, and the three walls 26,
27 and 28 entirely encircle the pintle pin 32.
In forming the hinge butt shown in Figs. 5 and 6, it will be understood that the overlapping portions, forming the walls 26, 27 and 28'are folded or otherwise fashioned around a. pin orV mandrel to form the pintle bearings ofthe butt, and the side portions 25a and 25" Vare brought together and welded or otherwise secured to form the complete butt. In this construction, the apertures in the sheet from which ,the butt 25 is formed, will be cut out in such manner as to leave a single wall 28 in the recesses of the butt to receive the pintle bearings of the other butt of the hinge,
"said wall forming the hood portion which terminates at 33 to form a stop shoulder as clearly seen in Fig. 6 ofthe drawing. It will be understood that-a hinge butt made in the manner above set out, and as disclosed in the several figures of the drawing, may he pro` duced at a comparatively nominal cost and from comparativel thin sheet metal, dependin upon the speci c use for which the hinge is ntended. At the same time, a strong and durable hinge is produced, and one which will have a neatand finished appearance, the joint of the hinge being covered or concealed by the hood portion which extends from the attaching plate portion of the butt in a smooth, curved line.
In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, it will be understood that the folded corner 30 may be forcibly fixed Within the fold 31 to retain the pintle bearings against separation when subjected to stress or strain. As previously stated, the several parts or sheets which may be regarded as dimensions, may be secured together, which aids in givin stren h, rigidity, and durability to the nishe product. As a matter of fact, the distinctive `feature of the invention resides in the construction of the pintle bearing portion of the butt of a laminatedV body, givin to such pintle `bearing portion, the require dimensions as well as strength and durability, and it will be understood that the pintle bearing, as well as the attaching plate portion of the butt, may be offset in the usual or inviany desired manner to compensate the hinge to supports and to the hanging of doorsrof any kind or class.
It' will be understood that while I have de scribed a certain method `of forming `or constructing thehinge butt, Vthat I am not necessarily limited to the s iiic arrangement of the walls of the pintle aring portions of the butt herein described, and various other chan es in and modifications of the construction i erein set out may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without de partingfrom `t-he spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is zy 1. A hinge butt fashioned from a single sheet of metal, the central portion of said sheet being rprovided with spaced apertures and vbeing `folded upon itself a number of` times to form a multiple wall thickness, said Walls being secured together, `and that part of the sheet with the multiple walls therein being fashioned to form a curved yhood portionrwith spaced cylindrical pintle bearings within said hood portion formed intermediate4 the apertures in said sheet. i
y 2. A hinge butt, the pintle bearing portion of which is fashioned to forma hood member extending longitudinally of the butt and composed of three walls arranged one upon the other and secured together, and the pintle bearings of the butt being formed by a Wall extending from the hood portion, said last named extended wall and another wall of the IPG hood portion extending in parallel relation to form an attaching plate portion.
3. A hinge butt, the pintle bearing portion of Which is fashioned to form a hood member extending longitudinally of the butt and Vcomposed of three Walls arranged one upon i the Walls of the hood portion intermediate the pintle bearings beingcut away toreceivc4 the other butt of the hinge.
4f. A sheet metal hinge butt fashioned from a sheet metal body having a laminated portion, the laminated portion of said body being fashioned tov form a curved hood portion, spaced pintle bearings Within and partially formed by said hood portion, `and the laminations of the hood portion intermediate the pintle bearings being reduced.
lfolded to form a laminated portion, the lam-k inatedportion of said body being fashioned into cylindrical formation to provide a longitudinal curved hood portion and spacedl pintle bearings of multiple Wall thickness-arranged at spaced intervals Within said hoodnl portion.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing as,"
my invention I have signed my name this 29th day of September,`1927. K
JOSEPH SOSS..
