IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTING-JAC KS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,125, dated May 9, 1876; application filed April 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE G. HowE, of Faribault, county of Rice, .and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification I In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved lifting-jack, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same as folded up after use.

My invention refers to an improved liftingjack that supports the wagon or other article reliably in raised position and it consists of legs pivoted to a top support, to which a lifting-lever is fulcrumed. A ratchet and guard of the lever serves, in connection with a pivoted locking brace-link of the outer leg, to retain the lever in hoisted position.
In the drawing, A represents the legs of my improved jack, which are pivoted to a metal socket or top support, B, and provided at the lower'ends with prongs or spurs to enter the ground and secure a stable position. The legs may be readily adjusted to 'difi'erent I heights of the carriage-axles or other objects by being spread to greater or less width. To
'the upper part of the socket or top support B is fulcrumed the hoisting-lever O, the fulcrum being vertically above the pivot-bolt of the leg nearer the lower end of the lever. The
lever O has at the top part a ratchet, G, and
a guard-wire, D, for the purpose of adjusting the brace-lin k E, that is pivoted to the outer leg, and readily moved along the ratchet-teeth, to lock the lever in the posit-ion required for keeping the wagon in raised position. The guard D serves'to keep the brace-link E near the ratchet, to be quickly applied when required. The brace-link E is made of two sections, thatare pivoted together for the purposeof folding with the legs and lever into compact shape, as shown in Fig. 2.
When the lever and objectis raisedthe brace-link is placed in position forlocking the same, forming,in connection with the convenience of folding and storing, a simple and easily operated jack.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A lifting-jack constructed of a top socket or support, swin ging legs pivoted to the lower part, and a fulcruned lever at the upper part of the socket, the lever having a top ratchet and guard, and being locked by a folding bracelink hinged to one of the legs, to be operated substantially as and for the purpose specified.
