invention consists in the fact that the handle thatserves to point the arm is mounted thereoncardanically or at least so asto beturned 'aboutanlaxis extendingrparallelvto the elevating axis (axis of thehorizontaltrunnions) of -the arm Bypthis possibility of turning.
andthereby adjustingthe, handle a conven which is grasping the handle is obtained without the hand closely grasping the vhandle, as requiredto hold thearm in the desired direction needs be loosened.
Our invention further provides in guns ofthis type in which also the; trigger mechar" nism is operated byhthe' operators hand 1 the pointing emotions ofthe-handle and thus grasping the pointinghandle to arrange also the) trigger so as to be turned like the handle and to so interconnect these two members bygsuitable means that the trigger follows is permanently in the range of the finger of the operators hand operatingthehandle; I V
In'order that our inventionvcan be more easily, understood, two preferred embodi 'ments of the same are illustrated byway of:
example in the accompanying drawings .as adaptedto a machlne gun mounted on a wheeled'carriage and comprising an arrange ment for varying the firing height.
In these drawings v Figure 1 is a lateral View of the gunan'd carriage in-the'position for high angle fire while 4' i V Figures ,2 to 5 show on an enlarged scale the' first embodiment of the pointing handle of the 'gun. More particularly a Figure '2 is a view toward the'breech end of thezgun,
Figure 3 is a section on line A-B of Fig-4 i ure2 1 V. V V
Figure 4 is a section on line G -D of Fig ure 2, while ure'2.
bodiment,
.zontal trunnions A handle B will be described hereinafter.
As seen'from Figure 2, there'ar wall aofthe breech end has swinginglyfi mounted l Figure ,'5 is a section on line E'F of Fig- Figure 6 is a rear viewof the -other'em- -ure 7.
Referring first to, Figure 1, A denotes the gun barrel the casing A .of which is mounted for elevation about the axis A of.
the horizontal trunnions in an intermediate carrier Z; The latter rests on a platformthe' trail of the wheeled carriage'Usubsides-into vand canbefixed thereon in a horizontal po-. ient natural position of the operators handposition for high angle fire as illustrated.
sition for long range fire and'in a Verticalcally) which is mounted thereon so as toturn about an axis B parallel to that of thehori- The construction of thereonby means of eyes a a and two pins two handles 6 Z2 thepinsib extending parallel to the axis of the horizontal trun- It the manipulating piece 6 that possesses' nions, Figure 5. In the range of the fingers of the operators hands grasping the two" handles 6 Z2 are arranged two-triggers 0 0 the one of which is intended to cause single fire and the other continuous firen The trig-' .gers 0 0 are so connected'to the firing de-' vice lodged in the breech enda and compris- I ing a lever cl and a rodd by'levers c and hnks '0 that no mutual displacement of the parts of the firing device can take'place upon the handles 6; being turned. 7 To thisend the fulcrumiof link 0 onlever cl coincides with the. turning axis of the manipulating piece 6. In order to prevent the manipulating piece Z2 from being turned as" described relatively ,to the breech end a 'ofthe arm the eyes a a on their periphery have recesses a adapt- ,edto be engaged by locking bolts 6 of piece 6. These bolts 6 can be disengaged from the recesses a byi-mea'ns of a releasing piece 7 which 'is in the range of the thumbs of'the operatorshands grasping the handles b 5 6 and can'be shifted inward in the piece b against the action of a spring f Two doublelevers g 'g pivoted on pins g 9 in the piece Z) engage both the releasing piece f and the locking bolts 6, Figure 5. When the releasing piece is shifted inward by thumb pressure the locking bolts 6 are lifted from the recesses a so that the piece 6 then can be turned about the pins 6 relatively to the gun. Upon releasing piece f, it moves outward under the action of spring and the bolts 6 enter those of the recesses a of the eyes a 41 that are opposite to them according to the position piece Z) just assumes.
in this manner the gun and the manipulating piece I) can be coupled with one another during the pointing motions whereupon after the gun has been set to the desired firing direction the piece I) is given a position enabling convenient and close grasping of the handles 6 6 during firing by temporarily releasing the described locking device.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figures 6 to 8 the breech end a carries two lateral hollow extensions a extending in parallel to the axis of the horizontal trunnions on which extensions the two pointing handles 6 12 are arranged rotatably and are secured against being jVltllCllflWIl from the extensions in any suitable manner. A trigger c respectively, is pivoted on each of the handles b in such a manner that it can be reached by the fingers of the operators hand grasping the respective handle. Out of the triggers thatdenoted by 0 is intended for single fire While 0 serves to cause continuous fire. As shown in Figure 7, the triggers c '0 project with suitable noses into the bores of the extensions 0a which noses abut on a trigger rod 0 shiftably mounted in the extensions and acted upon by a spring. This rod by means of an inclined surface 0 Figure 6 acts upon a lever cl and by the latter on the locking mechanism of the hammer (not shown).
When the gun is held by the hands and is swung about its horizontal trunnions relatively to the mounting by grasping the handles 6 b the latter turn about the extensions an. The triggers c 0 take part in this turning motion and are maintained in their position relatively to the handles without losing their connection with the other members of the firing mechanism or displacing them. The close grasping of the handles 6 6 required for holding and pointing the arm therefore neither needs be changed in giving even comparatively great elevations nor need be loosened in laying a finger on' one of the two triggers c 0 hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A fire arm comprising a mounting and a gun supported by it and adapted to be swung by hand about its pointing axes relatively to the mounting, and at least one pointing handle on said gun, said handle being adapted to be turned relatively to the gun at least about an axis parallel to the elevating axis of the gun.
2. A fire arm comprising a mounting and a gun supported by it and adapted to be swung by hand about its pointing axes relatively to the mounting, at least one pointing handle on said gun adapted to be turned relatively to the gun at least about an axis parallel to the elevating axis of the gun, a trigger mechanism to be operated by the hand manipulating said handle, the trigger of said mechanism being adapted to be turned relatively to the gun about an axis analogous to that of said handle, and means interconnecting said handle and trigger and causing the latter to follow the pointing motions of said handle.
3. A firearm comprising a mounting and a gun supported by it and adapted to be swung by hand about its pointing axes relatively to the mounting, at least one pointing handle on said gun adapted to be turned relatively to the gun at least about an axis paral- "lel to the elevating axis of the gun, and means for temporarily rigidly connecting said handle to said gun at least in one of their mutual positions.

6. A fire arm comprising a mounting and a gun supported by it and adaptedto be swung by hand about its pointing axes relatively to the mounting, at least one pointing handle on said gun adapted to be turned relatively tothe latter at least about an axis parallel to the elevating axis of the gun, a trigger mechanism on said gun adapted to be operated by the hand manipulating said handle and comprising at least one trigger, at least one journal on the gun, said handle being rotatably mounted on said journal and said trigger being rotatably mounted on said handle.
In testimony whereof I have aifixed my signature.
