IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-TDNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,100, dated May 9, 1876 application filed January 7, 1876.
To all whom 2t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. CURRY, of St. Petersburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved tool. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved instrument for turning pipes, bolts, nuts, and similar things, which shall be simple in construction and convenient and effective in use, being so constructed as to adjust itself to the object to be turned whatever be its shape, and whatever be its size, within reasonable limits.
The invention consists in the combination of the handle, the pivoted hook, and the two scmi-cylimlrical pivoted jaws with each other, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the handle of the instrument, upon the forward end of which is formed a cross-head. One end of this cross-head is rounded off, and in it is formed a groove to receive a tenon formed upon the inner end of the curved bar or hook B, which is pivoted in place by a pin. The forward side of the other end of the crosshead is concaved, and upon it is formed a tenon to enter a groove in the convex side of the semi-cylindrical jaw O, which is pivoted in place by a pin. The inner side of the outer end of the hook B is eoncaved, and upon it is formed a tenon to enter a groove in the couvex side of the semi-cylindrical jaw D, which is pivoted in place by a pin. The jaws O D have thus sufficient play to adjust themselves to the object to be grasped. Thefaces of the jaws O D are slightly eoncaved, and are toothed or roughened to cause them to grasp the objects to be turned more firmly.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the handle A, the pivoted hook B, and the semi-cylindrical pivoted jaws 0 D with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE M. CURRY.
