In continuous paper making machines the metallic web which carries the 'pulp for the formation of the sheet, after its passageover the suction boxes, is conducted, covered by 5 a felt to the pressure rollers (intended to remove 'a'considerable quantity of the water with which the pulp 'is still impregnated),
by causing it toadvance at a certain angle of inclination so as to permit of the lateral continual discharge of the Water in pro 01' tion as this latter is collected upon the fi iter immediately ahead of the upper roller of each pair of rollers. v
Due to this advance following an inclined i plane the machinefoccupies a considerable amount of space due to its height, which is a very serious drawback in premises where rooms of considerable height are not available "and in general when special pulps have to be dealt with, when it is necessary to have" a number of filter height. V In order to overcome this drawback it presses above the iiormal would be necessary to cause the displacement of the Web carrying the pulp and of the felt placed thereupon, in a horizontal plane; but 7 in that case, the water collected on the felt immediately ahead each pair of roller presses would invade the web which precedes the saidpair and would thus return to) the 'pulp thus saturating it afresh and destroying the effect of the work. a
Now the object of the present invention is a device intended to eliminate'the said drawback and permit pf the vgreatest possible effect of the series of pressure rollers by displacing, on a horizontal plane, the metallic web between them together with the pulp and the felt placed thereon.
The arrangement consists essentially of a suction device mounted in an adjustable manner upon the frame of each pair of pressure rollers and provided with asuction mouth, the length of which is proportional to the width of the sheet in course of work and which will bear for support against the web through its packing, the suction device being adjustably mounted with the assistance of suitable regulating means, in suchwise that the said packing will always be perfectly of-the said Figures 3 and 4 show a detail in elevation 66 and in transverse section respectively.
1 is the upper roller and 1 the lower roller of the pair of pressure rollers of the machine which is of the normal type and in which, in the usual way,'the upper roller 1 a is mounted by means of shafts 3 upon an arm 2 articulatedat 4 to the frame and provided with means for applying thereto the Weights necessary fonthe pressure to be exerted upon the web.
5 is the suction device provided, at its mouth with a packing 5? having a rounded edge which rests upon the felt b superposed upon the sheet a which latter is carried by the metallic web a moving in a horizontal lane in the direction of the arrow shown in igure 1. i
The suction device is provided laterally. with gudgeons 5 for mounting it upon the semi-cylindrical bearing s 6' carried by the arms Gwhich are ivoted at 7 to the frame of the machine. ne of the gudgeonsb" is hollow and carries the attachment 10 for the pipe connected to the suction apparatus. 4
The arm's/6 are provided with screws8 enaging against brackets 2' ofthe supporting frame of the roller 1, so that whenoperating these screws it is possible to regulate the height of the suction device in relation to the felt b and to adjust to the exact level the mouth of the suction device in a direction transversal to the sheet.
The screws 9 serve to lock the gudgeons 5" of the suction device upon? the semi-cylindrical bearing 6, and by varying the position gudgeons 5 upon the bearings adjustment of the position of the mouth of the suction device can 'be efi'ected so as to bring it to exactly the same level as the felt.
It is evident that, although the felt (with its sheet and the supporting metallic web) is dispalced in a horizontal plane, the water pressed out between the pair of pressure rollers' and which tends to collecton the felt=is at once sucked up by the suction device 5 without danger of spreading so that the felt can be kept dry, which renders the work much quicker and far more perfect.
What I claim is: a
1. In a machine of the character described, a stationary frame, a lower pressure roll journaled therein, a movable frame hinged to the stationary frame, an upper pressure roll journaled in the movableframe and cooperating with the lower roll, supporting arms pivoted on the movable frame and projecting outwardly in front of the rolls, a hollow suction device having lateral supports journaled inthe free ends of the supporting arms, means for clamping the lateral supports in said arms, fixed brackets on the stationary frame projecting under said arms, and adjusting screws projecting through the latter engaging the brackets for supporting said arms.
2. In a machine of the, character described, a lower pressure roll, a fixed support therefor, an upper pressureroll, a movable support for the latter hinged to the fixed support, supporting arms pivoted to the movable support projecting in front of the rolls, a hollow suction device having lateral supports mounted in the free ends of said arms, screws for adjusting the angular position of the suction device with respect to said arms, brackets on said fixed support projecting under said arms, and screws projecting through the latter engaging the brackets for adjusting the angular position of said arms with respect to the movable support.
3. In a machine of the character described, a lower pressure roll, a fixed support therefor, an upper pressure roll, a movable support for the latter hinged to the fixed support, supporting; arms pivoted to the movable support projecting infront of the rolls, a
hollow suction device having lateral supports mounted in the free ends of said arms, screws for adjusting. the angular position of the suction device with respect to said arms,
brackets on said fixed support projecting under said arms, screws pro ecting through the latter engaging the brackets for adjusting the angular position of said arms with respect to the movable support, and a rounded packing in the mouth of the suction device to engage the web passed between the rolls.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have si ed my name.
OSTILI SEVERINL.
