A
For the purpose of holding the back in differentinclined positions.' the links 15 connectedy with the legs 14 ofthe back` are provided with inwardly extended headed pins or projections 16 adapted to beengaged by a pair'of notched bars` 17 pivotally connected with the rearplegs 6 of theseat, these notched bars ,projecting forwardly of the legs and connected together, as at 18, to forni a` treadle, and being connected with the seat by a coil spring 19, whereby on its nianipulation the notched bars will be raised to release the pins of the back `and vpermit it to be lowered into different Vinclined positions and firmly held in any of such positions.
The back may be'raised to any desired position by merely shifting the back upward.
lThe shiftable or folding; arms each comprise a horizontal rbar 20 linked to the front part vof the seat section and preferably to the vfront legs thereof by a link 21 offset adjacent to itsA lower end, this link being pivotally connected to the `front leg of the seat section and to the front end of the arm bar er rest. The rear end of this arm bar or rest is offset, as at 22, vand is pivotally connected, as at23, to the folding rear leg 14 of the back. j hns bythis construction, the positionof the back and the back supporting legs determines the position of the arm rests so thatk when these legs are in position to support the-back when fully lowered, the
arm rests are entirely out of the way andin fact areslightly-below thel seat so that they do notinterfere with the article asa couch, and in this position, they may, because of the y Ylocation ofthe pivotal points, rbe pushed suf ficiently far down so as' to lock the back in its lowered position, if desired.V
Upon raising the back the arms are autofv matically shifted upwardlyand forwardly to correspond in height with the inclination of the back, the arms having their full height "when the back is fully raised.
Thus, it will be observed that in this improved convertible chair-couch the arm rests are at-the desired height for use in whatever position the backis located, thus providing a very practical convertible chair-couch and Vnot only a practical chaircouch but an ornamental one.
The structure' is. provided with suitable foldable cushions 24, preferably of kbookform construction, the front and seat section of the cushion being provided with a valance 25 at the hinge of the' cushions to overlap the front of the chair and give it a decorative appearance, while the back cushion is suitably 'connected to the top of the back section to maintain this back cushion in proper position, and for this purpose the back section is provided with a head rail 2.8, and the back cushionis provided at the top rear thereof with a pair of iapswhich may be laced Varoundpthe back and thus maintain the back cushion in proper position.
' lV`neiitlie structure is in the form of a couch and'it' is desired to 'convertit into a chair, the foot cushion is turned overupon the seat cushion and these Vtwo are ythen raised thereby permitting the foot section 3 tobfe folded upon theseat section whereupon the cushions are lowered. The back is thenV raised. thereby automatically shifting the foldable arms intovtlie proper position for use.
' The arm rest bars are provided with suitable pads 26 bolted thereto and which are covered by suitable arm rest covers 27 of ornamental fabric. f
It is to be understood that by Adescribing in detail liereiiiany particular form, structure or arrangement, it is not intended to limit the invention beyond the terms of the several claims or the requirements of the prior art.
