Y This invention relates to the weaving art,
and is more particularly concernedvvith bat-l ten' and batteri operating mechanism for power looms.
5 Gnefeatureof the present invention is the .Y provision of a reed-like batten with inecha-l msm for moving said batteri toward and from the fell, beating up the iilling asit is inserted and coinoidentlyeli'ecting a combing of the warpshed. This to andvfro movement is timed, preferably, to bring the batten to the fell .substantially coincidently vwith the re- Tversal of the heddles and .of the-threads of periods that the shuttle remains in its box l t break-outs are impossible.
so tiiat y A further and related feature is the pro'- vision of a reed-like batten automatically movable toward and from tliefelly upon'the` o entry of the shuttle in itsboX, and during its retention inthe box to press the filling thread into theY fell of thel cloth with the return movement lof the batten Ieifecting a combing of the warp shed.
A further feature of the invention is the provision of a shuttle race yplate having its race portion between the shuttle bones separate therefrom, a frame mounting a reedlilie batteri on which frame said race plate Lio section is also inountechand mechanism vfor for automatically movingsaid frame with its batten and race plate from a position of aline- 'inent of race plate and shuttleboxes-toward the fell and reve'rsely to alined position in timed relation to and during'the periodA of Vretention of the shuttlein its boX;
Another feature of the invention consists .of mechanism for moving the batteri pre- I viously described toward and'from the fell including mount for said batteri, a power Ytively controlled by the 'cams fell in timed relation to and duringV period the shuttle remains in the shuttle"` interference is prevented byautomati# Ycally controlling andv restricting the beating" up and incidental combing operations to thev view, theinvention consists'in driven dual vcontrol cam, bei' cooperating with and positively moved thereby in opposite directions, and means con iiectingsaid operating member and-mount fo'ijmovement inl unison when and While a shuttle is in its box. The dual cam control ensuring positive forward f movement and return of the hatten and race plate is a partic'ular advantageous structural provision, Y ince the movement of these parts isposi-` and the cam sliaftbeing coupled to thefpower drive of the loon'n'the cams can be gured to synchronize with the lieddle vmovementJ to` permit the combingv of the warp shedsv by Athe batteri as previously describedand. also synchronized an roperating mem-v with'tlie operationmechanism for the Vpicker sticks throwing the shuttle' to time the fon' jward and. return 'movement ofbatten and race plate to the period of inactivityof the picker sticks and therefore to the timer the sh zittle remainingjin the shuttle boxes;
With the above noted and other objects' in l the novel fea- Vtures ofconstruc'tion and-combinations and' arrangements of parts as willbe hereinafter inore'fully set forth and pointed lout in theclaims.V
v. The'structural features of the invention and its operation will be more clearly underf stood from the following detailed specification which. is to be read in conjunctionwith Vthe accompanying drawingsy forming part thereof, and in which :-l i o c Figure lis a topplan view of the mecha# nisnis of the present invention mounted in a loom frame, the associated mechanism of the loom being omitted.

A power driven shaft SQVmounted in the frame rearwardly of the heddles 3 andtoward the warp roll and whichmay constitute the main drive shaft of the machine or be intergeared therewith, entends outwardly from side member l of theframe'and has mounted upon its outer end 'a pair of complemental cams 40, il in abutting vaxially tion on the shaft. A reciprocating actuating member in the form of a pitman bar, generically Vdesignated. at 42 has its Vrear end formed as a dat verticalplate 43 longitudinally slotted and riding over the shaft 39,

Y A
The spring iin-polled movement ofthe cross latch bardownwardly is controlled, i. a, permitted andy Y prevented ,l through cooperating mechanism actuator through the usual binders 29 of the shuttle boxes as moved outwardly by the entry of the shuttle therein vand as moved inwardly by their springs 3l when the shuttle is driven from the box. According ly, a rock shaft 58 extends across the laybeam and below the oppositeshut-tle .boxes and is 59 having brackets 60 journallod in bearings secured to the forward side face of the lay beam. Below each shuttle bon, a crank v*arm 6l is aflixed to the rock shaft 58 through its sleeve 62and is positioned to cause its enlarged andiattened upper end 63 to rest against the inner end 32 of the shuttle boi; binder 29. A coil spring 64 encircles the shaft 58 between the shuttle boxes and has its opposite ends anchored to the lay beam 5 and to the s haft58 so that'the rock shaft norm-ally tends to `press the upper ends 6 3 ,of the crank inner end 32 of thebinder. Outward movement of a binder through the entry of the shuttle `in the boX will therefore through thecrank arms 61 roch comprising a longitudinally o 6.x-,
etl a point interino VRearwardly of' thev lug, the
boxing... ,e
ligand with l the shaft 58 forwardly, and the exit of' the reversely rotating the rock shaft 58. Between the sleeve 62 of the crank arm and the outer bearing 59 beneath the shuttle box at that side of the loom mountingthe dual cam and pitman, the sleeved rear end 65 of a trip arm 66 (Figures 4 and 5) is afixed to the shaft and rocked thereby, the forward end of this trip arm extending between the sides of the boxing 50 and underlying the rearward end or lifting lip 56a of the latching member. When Vthe binder 29 is moved outwardly by the entry of theshuttle in a shuttle box, therefore, the rock shaft 58 will be rotated forwardly and the trip arm 66 will be lowered permitting the coil spring56b to move the cross bar 57 of the latch downwardly to latch the pitman bar andcrank arm together for reciprocation through power operation of the cam shaft 39. The rear end of the latch bar is only positioned for engagement by the trip arm 66 when the oranlr arm l2 is in the position alining the race'plate on the frame carried by the rock shaf with the shuttle boxes 6 and their race plate extension 22 which is the position occupied by these parts shuttle is in a shuttle box and has inserted its filling thread through the warp shed, and is the posit-ion occupi-ed by the parts when the rock shaft and the frame have returned from a forward movement of theirinitial position, this return being figured through the cam drive to occur just prior to the ejection ofthe shuttle from a box. lf the shuttle actuating Ymechanism should for some'reason fail and the shuttle not enterA the bor, the pitman bar will continue to reciprocate without moving the crank arm since the lower end of the latch bar 57 will remain raised by the trip arm 66 to clear the upper edge of the boxing 50. Likewise as above stated, the trip arm 66 is only lowered to latch the cranlr arm l2 and pitman bar when the shuttle has entered the shuttle box.
rlhe pairs of'cams 4:0 and 41 mounted upon the power shaft are rotated by the shaft in timed relation both to the shed reversing mechanism and to the shuttle operating mechanism and the cams will be figured and timed through the shaft to eifect reciprocation of the pitman bar in this timed relation and between successive filling inserting i iovements of the shuttle. Positive control and positively effected movement of the pitman at all times is secured through the configuration of these cam surfaces.
In the operation of the loom, the cam shaft 39 continuously rotates and the cams therefore must be provided with a dwell or inactivev portion which as shown comprisees a half section, making the pitman inoperative during the period of filling inserting throw of the shuttle.
In Figure l, the parts sition they occupy after the box, unlatching the crank are shown in the pothe shuttle has left arm 12 from when the the pitman, and with the shuttle midway of its throw. The cam shaft rotates in a clockwise direction, and a quarter section D of dwell surface on cam l0 (half of the fthrow of the shuttle) has already moved past the abutment lll while a corresponding dwell section D of cam Lll has similarly moved past its abutment e5. Taking the movements of the cam in Figure lwith the shuttle thrown and midway Ythrough the shed :The second quarter section of dwell surface A on cam l0 moves past abutment la while the corresponding second section of dwell surface il on cam Lil passes over its abutment 45, leaving the pitman stationary. At the end of this dwell, the s.A .ttle enters the box at the opposite side of loom latching the vcranlr arm and pitman tl rough shaft 58 so that as the next and active quarter section B of cani f-lO at the rear side of the loom operates against its abutment elfi, this cranl: arm is moved forwardly with the pitman. This brings the cams at the end of the forward throw of section of cam Ll0, to the positions shown in Figure 5. Bur-ing the quarter revolution movement of section B of cam fr() eifecti1 c' a positive outward movement of abutm it le with its pitinan bar and connected crt il; shaft, the correspondingly receding section B of lcam all moves past the abutment i5 and permits the latter to move outwardly with the pitman bar.
The parts having thus moved to the position shown in Figure 5, continued rotation of cam shaft 39 causes a return movement of the pitm'an; i. e., as the cams now continue to rotate, the projecting quarter section C of cam ll engages abutment l5 and effects a positive rearward movement of the pitman bar. At the same time, the receding section C of cam @correspondingly moves rearwardly from its abutment Lili permitting movement thereof with the pitman bar as the latter is positively moved rearwardly through cam il. This rearward movement brings the hatten and race frame bach to its original position with its shuttle race 20 alined with the shuttle boxes as in Figure i, and is timed to terminate as the picker stick begins its movement to eject the shuttle, the lifting finger end 56a of the latch being positioned over the lower end of the trip arm 66 which Ais immediately lifted to unlatch the oranlr arm l2 from the pitman as the shuttle leaves the box.
As this returnpoint is reached in the revolution of the cams, their respective dwell sections l), A and D, A are positioned for engagement with the abutments all and Li5 respectively holding the pitman bar stationary during the next half revolution of the cam shaft during which the shuttle is thrown.
The pitman is therefore given a complete reciprocation between successive filling inserting movements or throws ot the shuttle.
lli@
the pitman reciprocating movements being `effected during :thehalfrevolutionof the.
cam' shaft `while the shuttle remains Vin a shuttle box.r.. Because of the coniiguration Yand c oaction .of the positively Vacting and receding portions of these cams, the to kand fro movement of the pitman, crank arm andA itsroclrshaft vand support-iframe, are positively 'controlled at all times. The automatic latching control efl'ected through .the physical cooperation ofthe Vshuttle with-the shuttle boxes'preven'ts movement of the batten.
and race frame'until .the shuttle has entered I a box and prevents break outs of the shuttle bypositively retainingthe intermediate race plate section in alined relation to the shuttle boxes while the shuttle is passing from box to box by releasing the frame for reciprocation tered Va box. v c Y The batten mechanism described is one that may be readily detached from the looml for repair or replacement; ithas the double fune tion of beating up the illingand combing only after the shuttle has en.
, the warp shed resulting in a liner product free v'from the imperfections caused by mats, the automatic shuttle control of its actuating mechanism obviates the possibility of break o`uts;v and thepositive control of timing. im. i f,
The provision. of a straight `cross beam similar to a lay beam but fixed o n theframe Withits top face cut down betweenits oppoits actuating mechanismsensures accuracy inA site'ends toLV aV plane permittinga swinging race plate to zoverlie its top face'fan'd aline with the bases or iioors Aof shuttlev boxes mounted on Vthe `tops of its opposite ends,
is not only advantageous-in: that the alinei, ment of the boxes is ensuredand maintained sincetheyare carried at opposite ends of a" straight beam, butin thatit serves as a mount for a loom-'traversing rock shaft cooperating with its opposed shuttle boxes and controlling batten and racey plate reciproeating mechanisminounted atV one side of the loom, and. serves also as p'latefpositlonlng stops.
