eATsNr GAS-COCK LOCK Application led March 11, 1929. Serial No. 346,199.
This invention relates to gas cock locks, and has for one of its principal objects the provision of means for locking Vthe valve member of the gas cock against rotation,
thereby preventing the opening of the cock by accidental Contact or by the tampering of children.
Une of the important objects of this invention is to provide in a gas cock lock, a means lf3 whereby the device may be attached to the ordinary gas cock with a minimum amount of trouble and expense.
Still another and further object of this invention is to provide in a gas cock lock a construction which may be readily and economically manufactured and which, when installed, will present a neat and ornamental appearance. n
Gther and further important objects of the 2G invention will be apparent `from the disclosures `in the accompanying drawings and following specification. y
rlhis invention, in a preferred form is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter morev fully described.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a gas cock showing the device applied to the ordinary gas cock.
Figure 2 is a side elevation ofFigure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the device itself.
Figure 4 is a section view of the device shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional r view showing the construction of the locking screw.
Figure 6 is a modification showing the device incorporated as a part oi the body of the gas cock;
As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 10 indicates generally the gas cock of the ordinary type used on gas ranges, lighting fixtures, heaters, and the like. The body 12 of these gas cocks is ordinarily constructed with a quarter segment cut away portion 14 at the top. This cut away portion determines the extent of rotation of the valve stem 16 as the stop pin 18 will strike against the body oil the cock when the valve stem is rotated in either direction7 the striking onk one side determining the, completely closed positionfoi the valve of the ordinary gas cock and the otherthe completely'open position. Figure 1 shows the valve in a closed position. l n
Around and atthe top of the cock bodyv is a band ring 20, preferably of `metal, its inside .diameter being slightly larger than the diameter of the top of the cock body, and is fastened on to the body by vmeans of a slotted CG headV setV screw Q2. At apoint almost opposite the stop pin 18 and in the same plane is a screw threaded hole for the reception oi' a locking screw 24, the locking screwbeing termed with `the screw portion of a length approximately equal to the thickness of the band ringplus the thickness'ot the upper portion of the cock body. It is also formed with a heavy shoulder 9.6, a knurled head 28, and swelled at its lower end, as indicated by numeral BO in Figure 5,- to prevent its becoming detached iro-m the band ring.
The band ring may be incorporated with the cock body inthe manufacture ot the gas 7W cocks as shown in Figure 6, and thus make still greater simplicity in construction.
As shown in Figure 1, when the locking screw 24 is turned to a position where the lower end of the screw portion fills a part of the cut away portion of the cock body 12, the stop pin 18 will strike against it and prevent the rotation of the valve stem 16. The screw threaded hole for the reception of the locking screw is positioned so that the locking screw will always prevent the openingof the valve when the valve stem is in a normally closed position. WV hen the locking screw is turned out, the valve stem may be rotated to either the closed or the open position of 9g, the valve. n
It will be seen that herein is provided a locking means which is positive, thusveliminating the danger to human life by escaping gas caused by accidental opening of the valve or by the meddling ot children. lt may be v readily applied to the ordinary gas cock, and which, beingV composedof a minimum number of parts, is not likely to get out of order. When the device is incorporated in the manufacture of the cock body, there is a still greater simplicity.
I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A safety locking device for gas cocks comprisin in combination a ring adapted to beinserte over the body of the gas cock, a set screw in the ring for locking the same in position, and a manually operated knurled screw in the ring, having its end projecting beyond the interior face thereof for contact with the stop pin of the gas cock valve.
2. A.` safety locking device for gas cocks comprisin in combination a ring adapted to be inserte over the body of the gas cock, a set sow in the ring for locking the same in position, and a manually operated knurled screwin the ring, having its end projecting beyond the interior face thereof for locking contact with the stop pin of the gas cock valve when in closed position.
3. A safety locking device for gas cocks comprisin in combination a ring adapted to be inserte over the body of the gas cock, a mt screw in the ring for locking the same in position, and a manually operated knurled screw in the ring, having its end projecting beyond the interior face thereof for contact with the stop pin of the gas cock valve, the interior surface of said ring being spheroidal to closely accommr date itself to the exterior of the' valve body.
In testimony vhereof I afix my signature.
