GAS COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An 22, 11922.
Application filed March 1, 1918. Serial No. 280,077.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HARRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Cocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlng. Y
My invention relates to a gas cock and I declare the following to be a full, clear, concise'and exact description thereof sufficient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like partsthroughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a gas cook that will be so constructed. as to cheapen the manufacture thereof and to be more effective in shutting off the escape of gas therethrough when the cock is closed. To this end, the cock employs a turn key which has a lateral recess cast therein and adapted to register with a lateral aperture formed in the wall of the casing of the cock, when the cock is in open position, whereby to permit the escape of the gas.
Heretofore, in the construction of cocks, the key has been assembled tothe casing and a hole drilled through the casing and the key thus united. This method is very unsatisfactory for thereason that it is impossible to correctly estimate the'location of the hole in the key, whereby to make the proper allowance for the gradually shifting of the keyrelative to its socket in the casing due to abrasion incident to the grinding operation of fitting the key in a gas tight manner in the barrel or casing. Therefore, after a short time when the key has begun to wear away,'the hole therein looses its alignment with the hole in the casing and prevents the gas from properly escaping through the cock. Furthermore, the drilling of the hole through the casing and the key in assembled position, causes a roughened or bulging edge on the key adjacent the hole. This roughened edge wears by abrasi0n, in the grinding iii-process, a recess in the casing, which recess causes the cock to leak.
These defects are avoided in the present construction illustrated in the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the cock with an L burner attached thereto; 1
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the cock and attachment;
Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a perspective of the cock casing;
Fig. 4: is a transverse section of the cock,
without the attachment, taken upon the line- H of Fig. 1;
Fig; 5 is a detail perspective view of the key employed;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a washer employed 5' Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail perspective view of another washer employed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the casing of the cock is represented by -1+; The casing 1- has a transverse part2 with a tapering aperture 3 for the reception of a key f. The casing -1 has a conduit 5. The end 6 of the casing is equipped with screw threads to adapt the cock to be attached to any suitable supply pipe. The outer surface of the opposite end 7 is provided with convolutions 8, whereby a hose may be attached if found desirable. It has also a threaded portion at 9, whereby an elbow 10 may beattached to support a burner 11. The burner 11 is screw threaded at 12 to the elbow 10. The burner 11 may be attached directly to the threads 9. The end 7 formed with the convolutions 8 and the threads 9 adapts the cockto be used as an L burner, a hose cock Or for use independ ently of the l. burner and hose cock, thus combining three functions in the one cock.
The interior wall of the part 2 has a lateral recess 15. The key 1 also has alateral recess 16 that is cast therein The recess 15 of the part 2 and the recess 16 of the key 4 forms a continuous passageway from end to end of the conduit 5 when the key 4; is in open position as illustrated in Figs l, 2
and 4. The conduit 5 is closed when the key 4 is turned at right angles to the position illustrated in those figures, the recess 16 in the key 4being in the dotted line position illustrated in Fig. 4.
The means for stopping the turning of the key 4 in either the full open or full closed position embodies a washer 20 having a sul stantially rectangular opening 31 adapted to fit over, the substantially rectangular shaped upper end 21 of the key 4,so as to turn with said key 4. The washer 20 has a depending lug 22 which makes contact with the lugs 23 and 24 that are formed integral with the outer surface of the part 2.
The key 4 is held snugly in position with in the aperture 3 of the part 2 by a coiled spring 32 that bears at one end against the upper surface of the washer '20 and at the other against the under surface of the washer 25. The washer 25 is mounted, to
the upper end 2]. of the key 4 and held in place by the teeth 2626 formed integral with said washer. The teeth 26 engage the shoulder 27 made in the upper end 21 of the key 4. The washer'25 has a central recess 29 for the projection of the end 21. When assembling the washer 25, it is pushed down upon the end 21 against the tension of the coiled spring 32 until the teeth 26 are past the shoulder 27, whereupon the washer 25 is released and the teeth 26 are bent to engage against the si'oulder 27 to hold the washer 25 in place.
The operation of the valve will be understood from the foregoing description. The turning of the key 4 into the position illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, will cause therecess 16 in said key 4to c0mn1unicate with the recess 15 in the wall of the part 2 of the casing -'-1, and thereby open up a continuouspassageway for the escape of the gas alongthe conduit 5. The passage way will be closed by turning the key at right angles to the position illustrated in Figs; 1, '2and 4.
Furthermore, the cock can be used for a hose by'removing the elbow 10, or it can.
bev used for an L burner, by employing the elbow 10 and burner 11, or still further, the burner'11can be attached directly to the threads 9 of the casing --1-, thereby forming a pillar cock. Having thus described my invention what I claim as newand' desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas cock, a casing having an aperture therein, a key disposed in said aperture, spring means for holding said key within said aperture, a lateral recess in the wall of said casing, a lateral recess in said key adapted to co-operate with the recess in said wall, whereby to permit the passage of gas when the key is turned into open position, and means for stopping the turnby to co-operate with other means on said casing to stop the turning of the key in either full open or closed position.
3. In a gas cock, a casing having an aperture therein, a key disposed insaid aperture, spring means for holding said key withln said aperture, a lateral recess in the. wall of S2L1Cl CflS1I1g, a lateral recess in said key adapted to co-operate with the recess in said wall, whereby to permit the passage of gas when the key is turned into.

5. In a gas cock, a casing having an aperture therein, a key disposed in said aperture, a coiled spring for holding said key within said aperture, a lateralrecess in the wall of said casing, a lateral recess in said key adapted to co-operate with the rece'ss in said casing, whereby topermit the passage of gas when the key is turned into open position, lugs formed on said casing, a washer having an opening adapted to fit over the upper end of the key, and a depending lug on said washer, whereby to co-operate with the lugs on said casing to stop the turning of the key in either full open or full closed position.
- '6. In a gas cook, a casing having an aperture therein, a key disposed in said aperture, a coiled spring. for holding said key within said aperture, a lateral recess in the wall of said casing, a lateral recessin said key adapted to co-operate with the recess in said casing, Wherehy to permit the passecond Washer having teeth. adapted to ensage of gas when the key is turned into open gage the upper end of the key, whereby to position, a Washer having a depending lug, aid in holding said key in position. 10 lugs formed on said casing and adapted to In testimony whereof I have aflixed my 5 (Io-operate With the lug on said Washer, signature.
