ANGLE-COCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. as, rare.
Application filed August 5, 1915. Serial No. 43,825.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE L. RoBINsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Angle-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in angle cooks for air brake systems, one of the objects being to so arrange the plug of the valve that the same will not become loose or defective from constant friction or wear and wherein the said plug or valve will automatically grind itself and so obviate the necessity of replacing worn plugs and overcoming accidents resulting by the escape of air through imperfect valves.
With the above andother objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appende claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a valve constructed in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates an angle cock adapted to be arranged to receive and to be firmly connected with one end of the hose connection. The casing for the angle cock is threaded at one end, as at 4, for the reception of the threaded end of the line air pipe (not shown), and is also threaded at its outer end, as at 5, for connection with the hose section (not shown).
The central or body portion 6 is centrally tapered for the reception of the valve plug 7. This taper it will be noted, is larger at the top of the body than at the bottom thereof, and likewise the plug 7 has its largest portion at its upper end. The larger top portion of the casing is provided with an exterior threaded annular flange 8 upon which is screwed a cap 9. The cap has its inner face provided with a bore or depression 10 and the top of the plug 7 is formed with an annular flange 1.1. This flange is adapted to receive a spring member 12 which has its opposite endreceived in the depression 10 of the cap 9, the said spring exerting a tension between the cap and plug to force the plug downward and in tight engagement with the walls of its seat. A gas ket 12 is arranged between the flange of the cap 9 and the top of the casing.
The lower wall of the casing through which the reduced end of the plug projects 1s provided with a downwardly extending annular portion 13 provided with spaced notches 1 1, and the reduced projecting end of the plug is formed with a square or rectangular extension 15 which passes through a sleeve or collar 16 provided angularly upon a handle 17 the said portion 15 of the plug being pivoted, as at 18, to the said sleeve of the handle. The sleeve is provided upon its end diametrically opposite that formed with the handle 17, with an upstanding lug 19 that is adapted to engage in one of the notches 1 1 to lock the plug when the same is rotated to close or open the port of the caslng.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
An angle cock having its body portion provided with a cone-shaped bore, a coneshaped plug filling the bore, said plug having its upper and widened end provided with an annular ring, a cap upon the upper face of the casing and surrounding the upper end of the valve, a pocket within the cap, a spring between the pocket and the mentioned ring to force the plug downward and into contact with its seat, the reduced end of the plug extending below the casing and provided with a rectangular member, an angular handle having a collar portion receiving the said rectangular end of the plug, a pivot between the collar and the said end of the plug, a lug formed upon the collar diametrically opposite the handle, and the lower face of the casing being provided with spaced lugs to receive the mentioned lug of the collar of the handle when the handle is permitted to swing by gravity upon its pivot, and the handle and the portion of the casing adjacent thereto being curved downwardly.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLAUDE L. ROBINSON.
