Description

I DESK T ABLE TOP, AND COUNTER EDGIfiG Filed July 5, 192 8 II II/I/I/l/I/I/l/I/IA 7////////: I
INVENTOR wzwa/ 6. izafin 'y A TTORNE Y Patented 193- on the flat upper surface of a desk or table UNITED STATES SAMUEL C. A'WBREY, OF
PATENT OFFICE KANSASCITY, MISSOUI RI, ASSIGNOR TO ETHEL AWBREY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI DESK, TABLE TOP, AND COUNTER EDGING Application filed July 5, 1928. SeriaI No. 290,326.
on thesurface, both against horizontal and vertical movement.
Another object of this inventionis the provision of an edging having a recess ad acent the bottom outer edge of the linoleum when in position, which is adapted .to receive the frayed edges of the covering whlch sometimes results from the cutting of the same.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of an edging which 1s revrsible to accommodate coverings of different thicknesses.
Still further objects are simplicity of construction, neatness of appearance and durability.
With these general objects in View, as well as min-or objects which will appear during the course of the detailed specification, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of an edging embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, shown in operative position on a desk.
Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, with the edging reversed to accommodate a covering of greater thickness.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form, with the ratchet teeth omitted, and
Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the modified form, shown in operative position on a desk.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views, and the numeral 10 designates an edging flange having a convex outer surface 11, and having a rearwardly extending horizontal securing flange 12, which is adapted to be positioned top. Preferably, securing flange 12 is of uniform thickness throughout, in order to secure a smooth horizontal top surface. Flange 12 is provided with counter-sunk screw holes 13 to receive flat headed screws 14: in order to present a smooth surface to the under side of the linoleum, when the edging is screwed to the desk top. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the securing flange 12 is substantially perpendicular to the general direction' of the inner face of the edging flange 10, and meets the same off the vertical center line thereof, and intermediate its top and bottom edge, so that the distance from the securing flange to the top of the edging flange is equal to the thickness of the thinner linoleum, and the distance from the lower side of said securing flange to the bottom edge of said edging flange is equal to the thickness of the thicker linoleum. Should it be desirable to make the flanges of equal depths, the securing flange may be centered on the edging flange 10.
For the purpose of properly securing the covering L on the table top against vertical movement, a plurality of longitudinal grooves 15 are provided on the rear side of "'1 edging flange 10 and on each side of the securing flange 12. The ratchet toothed grooves 15 are so positioned that they form ratchet teeth 16 which incline inwardly toward the securing flange, thus providing means whereby the covering may be pressed downwardly into position, but cannot easily move upwardly against the squared face of the ratchet teeth 16. Also, when pressure is constantly applied to the surface of the covering, the edge of the linoleum will. gradually conform to the inner surface of the edging flange 10, thus securely locking said covering against upward movement. Edging flange 10 is also provided with a longitudinal groove 17 adjacent each side of the securing flange 12. These grooves are adapted to receive the frayed edges of the linoleum, or covering, so that said covering may be properly positioned against the back face of the edging flange 10. The screws 14:, which are imbedded in the table or desk top T, securely hold the edging in position against the outer edge of said top, to prevent any horizontal movement of the top covering, which is positioned against the inner side thereof. As shown in Fig. 3, it is very evident that the edging may be reversed to accommodate a covering of greater thickness. In Figs. 2, 3 and 5, it will be noted that a filler F is positioned between the table top and the covering within the securing flange to maintain a smooth surface for the reception of the covering. While this is the preferred way of maintaining a smooth surface,-yet it,
is apparent that the securing flange 12 could easily be morticed into the table or desk top.
As clearly shown in all the figures, the planes of the inner surfaces of the edging flange above and below the securing flange are parallel, but not in the same plane,'thus making the narrower projecting portion ofdinal grooves 17, similar to grooves 17 would be provided to receive the frayed edges of the covering. This construction is best suited for use when a material is used that has very little tendency to move vertically, thus not requiring the ratchet tooth ribs.
I do not limit this invention to the structure shown and described, as manymodifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
\Vhat is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. An elongated edging for the purpose set forth, comprising an edging flange and a securing flange extending rearwardly therefrom, said securing flange meeting the rear side of said edging flange intermediate its top and bottom, and a series of inwardly projecting longitudinal ratchet teeth in the rear side of said edging flange on each side of said securing flange.
2. An edging for the purpose set forth, comprising an edging flange and a securin flange extending rearwardly therefrom, said securing flange meeting the rear side of said edging flange intermediate its top and bottom, a groove in the rear side of said edging flange adjacent each side of said securing flange, and a series of inwardly projecting longitudinal ratchet teeth in the rear side of said edging flange on each side of said securing flange. I
3 An edging for the purpose set forth, comprising an edging flange having a rearwar ly extending securing flange integral therewith and substantially perpendicular to the rear surface thereof intermediate its top and bottom, a groove in the rear side of said edging flange adjacent each side of said securing flange positioned entirely without the plane of the rear side of said edging flan e.
4. An edging for the purpose set Forth, comprising an edging flange and a securing flange extending rearwardly therefrom, said securing flange being perpendicular to said edging flange intermediate its top and bottom, a groove in the rear side of said edging flange adjacent each side of said securing flange, and a series of inwardly projecting longitudinal ratchet teeth in the rear side of said edging flange on each side of said securing flange.
5. An edging for the purpose set forth, comprising an edging flange having a securing flange extending rearwardly therefrom, said securing flange being erpendicular to the rear side of said edgin flange at one side of the center line thereo a groove in the rear side of said edgim flange adjacent each side of said securing flange, and a series of inwardly projecting, longitudinal, ratchet toothed ribs on the rear side of said edging flange on each side of said securin flange.
6. An edging for the purpose set orth, comprising an edging flange having a securing flange extending rearwardly' therefrom, said securin flange being perpendicular to the rear si e of said edging flange at one side of the center line thereof, a groove in the rear side of said edging flange adjacent each side of said securing flange, and a series of longitudinal, ratchet toothed ribs on the rear side of said securing flange on each side of said securing flange, each ratchet-toothed rib having its inclined surface extending rearwardly toward said securing flange.
7. An edging for the purpose set forth, comprising an edging flange havin a securing flange extending rearwardly therefrom, said securing flange being erpendicular to the rear side of said edging flange at one side of the center line thereof, the portions of said edging flange on each side of said securing flange having their rear faces respectively in ofl'set parallel planes, a groove in the rear side of said edging flange adjacent each side of said securing flange, and a series of inwardly projecting, longitudinal, ratchet toothed IlbS on the rear side of said edging flange on each side of said securing flan e.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto a x my signature.
SAMUEL G. AWBREY.
